If you need a beautiful water feature on your property, talk to the FiveSTAR Landscape guys. They’ve just finished installing mine, and it looks more spectacular than what I had envisioned. They completed the job in one day and their price was very reasonable.

I have worked with several landscape design companies, and Five Star Landscape has been the most outstanding. They are true professionals and wonderful to work with. The have taken great care of our property’s landscape for the past three years. They recently installed a firepit and garden lighting, and we couldn’t be satisfied with their work.

The problem That we had is that we had to have one of the plants replaced because it died and then they had to basically re plant a majority of the front yard. They had been planted either too deeply or two shallow the first time around. But they did  fix the problem.

The owner came out once to view the property, signed me up for the design in the amount of $700. He said he'd give me a credit for this amount against a bid he would make on the plans. He sent out a licensed landscape architect Michael Shular from UC Davis to the plans. Both times Michael came out, he was 15 minutes late. I told Shular that I needed the landscaping to cost between $5,000 and $7,000 - and that the plans should bring it in this range, but for some rock upgrades that I wanted. He included 26 boulders in the plans.

When the owner came out to bid it (also 15 minutes late), he left out the boulders and included them as a $2K option, and gave me a $7980 bid (that reflected the $700 discount). So, a $10,000 bid for everything. $1,000 in add-ons for stuff I needed to provide, like fountains and pots. Big increase from my range.

When I bid it out to a Davis landscaper, he told me that because of our water, 1/3 of the plants would die or not survive very long. The architect didn't appreciate that his design needed to include plants that would thrive in this area. I now need to pay someone else to redo the plan for my area.

Waste of money and time, and no apology for poor work from the owner, mark Chester.

When Mr. Chester gave me references at first, there were no phone numbers or addresses. I had to ask for them.

Had a bad feeling, and it was borne out by what I got.

BTW, two bids for Mike's plans were $12,000+. No listening whatsoever to my parameters. Do better FiveSTAR.

On time and very knowledge about appropriate plants for my area and most important, why? Received some 'knowledge' on landscaping and a design I could have their company install or DYI.

Scheduled time and met with Tim (Manager). We talked and I told him that I wanted something different and needed it to include a water feature foremost to cut down on the traffic noise. I also wanted an area for an outdoor kitchen and hot tub if it fit and pointed out some traffic flow issues with the backyard that I wanted addressed. He took measurements, told me that I would receive them the week after Thanksgiving and then left. Well, the week after Thanksgiving came and went. I thought maybe he fell behind on his schedule due to the holidays. After a couple of weeks, I emailed him with no response. Finally after another week, I called in and asked about them. He emailed me the plans a day later. Boy was I shocked. It looked just as it did before he did anything but with a few more plants added, 2 squares added (one for the outdoor kitchen and one for a hot tub) with three round circles to the outdoor kitchen square. No water feature was present nor were where any dimensions for the squares added and none of the traffic flow issues addressed. I truly could have done the same thing (Tim's end product) myself but really wanted an expert's creative vision, which is certainly not what I received.
I emailed to ask more questions. It took a couple of weeks for Tim to get back with me. When I asked why the plan was so off from what we talked about I was told that most of the time went to travel and that was the best he could do. He did provide the dimensions of the squares drawn in this email though. He did not provide information on what the plantings looked like nor did he seem interested in gaining any business. He just wanted to be done with it. I was extremely disappointed. It was a big waste of money and I would never recommend them.

Provider did not understand what we were looking for. We ended up getting another plan from Angie's List, not pleased with this provider.

Went OK. We only had the design work. The design that they came up with was OK. However, the person doing the design did not totally listen to us and missed the mark the first time. Ultimately we ended up doing the design ourselves.
They seem like a very professional company. Our project may have been too small for them. I felt confident that they would do a good job. But their price was out of our budget.

They showed up on time. They listened to us in terms of what we wanted. He pressured a little bit of I could do a lot more. I don't hold that against him because when you are in business that is a way of marketing and that's what you do. I wasn't expecting that and then I thought, well, why not. We didn't have anything else in our budget. We had only been in the house for a couple of years. When we moved into the house we noticed that there were exterior lights but they didn't work. We looked at them a little bit but it seemed like it was too complicated of a job for us and we needed someone with some electrician skills. He was able to do it so I was really surprised.

I liked the design. I received a drawing of the yard with all the elements included that we had discussed. That drawing helped me see the possibilities for my new yard. Ultimately, I went with another company to complete the project.

Scheduling was easy, and the gentleman who came out was very professional and polite. We discussed what we were hoping for in our space, and talked a lot about the types of plants, degree of maintenance, etc we were interested in. He got the plans back to us in a reasonable amount of time after seeing him.
My only complaint was that we had talked about a lot of plants that we liked (succulents, kangaroo paws, etc) and he didn't include any of them in the plans. We ended up using his design for the side yard with a few tweaks, (we did the plantings on our own), and came up with our own ideas for the back and the garden boxes. Overall it was a good experience, especially for the price!

Tim (?) was great to come out and spend quite a bit of time with us, to get a good idea of what we wanted in our backyard. The plans are beautiful, and we have to wait to get started, but are very excited to have Five Star come out and do much of the work!

The lady who came out said someone else would have to come out to do the measurements even though I told her that I had already done the measurements. Another person came out later, and they said that the measurements were good and that everything was scaled just fine. The final product, the plans, were excellent, but the whole project took longer than it needed to because of the two separate visits.

I bought a coupon for 4 hrs of Landscaping plans for $85. The next day I was contacted by 5 star office personnel to schedule an appointment. I said I thought the coupon was good until Oct 2012 and as we were planning to get to the work in the fall and I would call to arrange an appointment nearer the time. She was insistent that I should do it now as they would be too busy later on .

As I only wanted someone else's ideas, a new perspective (we had been trying to decide what to do with the area for 10 years) I finally agreed.

The contractor was with me less than an hour. The plan had nothing that we had not considered ourselves , no new or innovative ideas and I find it hard to believe that the plan I received took 3 hrs to compile on a computer. We have used computer software for landscaping ourselves...it would not have taken 3 hrs for us to put the plan together and we are not professional landscapers.

A total of 54 plants, shrubs and trees were to be planted in the area. This does not correlate with my main focus of minimum maintenance.

I found the whole process unsatisfactory...one item stands out in my mind. The contractor suggested black bark as a mulch. I emphatically vetoed the idea . We find it ugly and fake looking and I told him we definitely would not want it.

There it was on the plan.
:and quot;Note install black bark in all new plantar areasand quot;

That made me realize that for all the putting customers first etc in the glossy brochure the contractor had not listened to me.

The service went reasonably well. First, a technician measured our property and then a landscape architect made the actual plan. Initially, they were quick to respond, but then we had to wait for the plans. Also, when they initially measured the properly, it was incorrect, according to the way they drew the out plans. We weren't ecstatic, but I think for the price, they did an okay job.
