When the owner came out to bid it (also 15 minutes late), he left out the boulders and included them as a $2K option, and gave me a $7980 bid (that reflected the $700 discount). So, a $10,000 bid for everything. $1,000 in add-ons for stuff I needed to provide, like fountains and pots. Big increase from my range.
When I bid it out to a Davis landscaper, he told me that because of our water, 1/3 of the plants would die or not survive very long. The architect didn't appreciate that his design needed to include plants that would thrive in this area. I now need to pay someone else to redo the plan for my area.
Waste of money and time, and no apology for poor work from the owner, mark Chester.
When Mr. Chester gave me references at first, there were no phone numbers or addresses. I had to ask for them.
Had a bad feeling, and it was borne out by what I got.
BTW, two bids for Mike's plans were $12,000+. No listening whatsoever to my parameters. Do better FiveSTAR.
"[member name removed], my name is Tim Bell General Manager at FiveSTAR Landscape and I'm sorry to hear that you had a less than exemplary transaction with FiveSTAR Landscape. With over 33 years and 23,000 clients served, it is our mission to provide excellent customer service to not only our clients' but to everyone we come in contact with, irregardless if they are a client or not. I cannot erase the past but I do have a staff of architects and I would be more than happy to get you a working design that works with your budget. Please feel free to contact me at 916-735-1100."
I emailed to ask more questions. It took a couple of weeks for Tim to get back with me. When I asked why the plan was so off from what we talked about I was told that most of the time went to travel and that was the best he could do. He did provide the dimensions of the squares drawn in this email though. He did not provide information on what the plantings looked like nor did he seem interested in gaining any business. He just wanted to be done with it. I was extremely disappointed. It was a big waste of money and I would never recommend them.
They seem like a very professional company. Our project may have been too small for them. I felt confident that they would do a good job. But their price was out of our budget.
My only complaint was that we had talked about a lot of plants that we liked (succulents, kangaroo paws, etc) and he didn't include any of them in the plans. We ended up using his design for the side yard with a few tweaks, (we did the plantings on our own), and came up with our own ideas for the back and the garden boxes. Overall it was a good experience, especially for the price!
As I only wanted someone else's ideas, a new perspective (we had been trying to decide what to do with the area for 10 years) I finally agreed.
The contractor was with me less than an hour. The plan had nothing that we had not considered ourselves , no new or innovative ideas and I find it hard to believe that the plan I received took 3 hrs to compile on a computer. We have used computer software for landscaping ourselves...it would not have taken 3 hrs for us to put the plan together and we are not professional landscapers.
A total of 54 plants, shrubs and trees were to be planted in the area. This does not correlate with my main focus of minimum maintenance.
I found the whole process unsatisfactory...one item stands out in my mind. The contractor suggested black bark as a mulch. I emphatically vetoed the idea . We find it ugly and fake looking and I told him we definitely would not want it.
There it was on the plan.
:and quot;Note install black bark in all new plantar areasand quot;
That made me realize that for all the putting customers first etc in the glossy brochure the contractor had not listened to me.
