I contact Hector at Garage Door Man and he said that Gino was off in 15 minutes but that he would let him know and even join him so that the job could get finished quickly. He gave me a quote over the phone (guessing on what I needed). When they arrived, they introduced themselves and then had the garage door completely fixed in less than an hour. They replaced a broken wheel and the broken cable, re-lubricated all the joints and made sure the door was working properly. They were polite and so easy to work with.

Poorly, as after the installation there were 3 return visits because the door went off the track. 18 months later, it again went off the track which led to another visit with a $149 fee for fixing what should have been done right in the first place. I recommend that you include in your budget not just the original work but the additional money you will be charged for them to get it right.
Response from Garage Door Man
"I apologize that you are not satisfied with the garage door install that was completed in 2014. There are many variables that can cause a door to go off track and therefore cannot be covered under warranty. However, as a courtesy we did reset your door for you at no cost during the first year following the install. It is our feeling that if the install had been faulty, it would not have worked for 18 months and then malfunctioned. We wish you the best with whichever garage door company you use in the future."

I was going to ask to replace only a few hinges. However, I finally decided to get all the hinges (maybe 15 in total) replaced because I got to know $85 will be charged separately for the service call otherwise. It was a bit surprising. It would have been nicer if they had let them know when I made the appointment. The work was done quickly. Hector did his job well and corrected some mistakes the assistant had made. Because of the mistakes and corrections, my door panels had to get more drill holes than actually needed. Anyway, the door overall looks sturdier than before.

Ok - I'm very picky, I research the heck out of everything and everybody before I buy or hire, and I'm reasonably familiar with many household and auto repairs so I try to do as much work as possible myself, but I feel that garage door spring spring replacement is generally best left to the experts.  So I searched all the usual websites and sources for reviews and info, researched all the specifics of my specific garage door problems, and talked to several neighbors and friends -  and I eventually came down to choosing Garage Door Man for the work.
I'd also had a poor experience with a different company, Garage Door Medics, just a few months earlier when I'd called those guys for an Angie's List garage door tune-up/lube special - they came out, oiled the door but refused to adjust or doing anything else and were very quick to try to upsell me for a whole new system at $1.5-2K, etc (very common theme with garage door and many other service companies).
My experience with Garage Door Man was much, much better.  Julie was courteous, efficient, and professional on the phone all three times that spoke with her.  She scheduled Hector to come out and take a look at my door within a couple of days.  Hector was really exceptional in all phases of the job.  I provided him with as much detailed information and measurements/sizes of all components of my door when he arrived and I had everything cleared out in the garage - he answered all of my many questions and gave me straight forward honest answers regarding everything.  I can't tell you how much I appreciate a contractor/service provider who will just be straight with you, respect what you have to say about the job, and provide an honest true estimate of the work.
I initially wanted only the springs and cables replaced and maybe some advice/repair on the crack/split in the top section of my door, (suspect this damage occurred when I manually released the door from the opener track with my son and only one good spring holding this 300 lb door - it slammed down fairly hard).    I expected that I'd be doing the opener motor replacement myself later on in the year as I'd already repaired some of its internal electronics two months earlier and was also a little short of extra funds - but I'd already researched openers extensively and I was open to GDM possibly including the motor replacement in this job - for a reasonable price.  I told Hector which brand, size, and drive-type of opener I was interested in and he said he would bring one with him when he came back to do the actual work - he also asked Julie to give me the exact model (Liftmaster 8557) so I could research its specifics to my satisfaction before he came back.  Julie called soon after and scheduled me for Tuesday the following week, but later called to say that she could move me up to Monday due to a cancellation.  All in all, both Hector and Julie were very prompt and responsive with all of the scheduling and work.
Hector showed up on time the following Monday, explained everything to me to my satisfaction (and yes, I can be a bit hard to please) and got right to work.  He replaced both springs with a size combination that better fit and balanced my heavy door, replaced both cables, put in a better center shaft/spring support bearing, replaced the door opener motor system, installed an external entry keypad in my chosen location (this was an extra item I elected to add), programmed the remotes and keypad for me, provided a repeater to allow compatibility with my wife's car's Homelink door opener button, provided all of the paperwork and instructions, fully explained all aspects of the system to me, and answered all of my specific questions about lubrication, future adjustment, roller upgrades, and the Liftmaster 8557 system's controls and features.
All in all, Hector provided exactly what I wanted and needed - he installed better quality parts than most GD companies use, gave me a fair price for the parts and work, and absolutely most important to me, he was straight and honest with me and listened to what I had to input in coming up with the most agreeable plan of action.  The video that is posted on the Garage Door Man home page is honestly exactly what these guys do.  It's a smaller company so sometimes it might take just a little longer for them to schedule in every job, but they are a solid trustable name.  Hector does most of the repairs, Jim (the owner) does most of the installs, and Julie coordinates and keep everything running smooth.  For my project, this company was great and I would highly recommend them to my friends and neighbors far and above any other GD company out there.

"I am so glad that you had such a great experience. We apreciate you taking time out of your day to write this review. A customer that does his own research is helpful in leading both parties to a satisfied completion of the job. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any future questions or concerns about maintaining all of your new components."

Technician showed up over an hour late. When he arrived, his attitude was poor, however the springs were replaced. When the technician left, I noticed the garage door opener, which I know is old, was sounding different.  A bit over a week later the opener broke and there was so much tension on the door that it was difficult to lower. We were concerned about the tension on the springs.
I contacted them and the owner and another technician came to the house to see, the owner was very defensive.  He acted like I wanted something for free,  I just wanted assurance that the work was correct and had not hastened the openers death.  The owner eventually agreed there was too much tension on the springs and adjusted them. I declined offers of any more repairs.
When I mentioned of the Angie's List referral, he told me I would be sued if I wrote a negative review.  Overall, unpleasant.
Response from Garage Door Man
"Every customer receives a 2 hour time frame within which the technician is to arrive. The timeframe given was between 8-10 and the technician arrived within that timeframe at 9:30. He then tried to complete the repair as quickly as possible since the customer had other obligations. We were contacted nine days later with accusations of using the wrong springs, damaging an opener that was 22 years old, and told that the door would not close when on the manual setting. We immediately sent a technician out who agreed that the springs needed a slight adjustment but confirmed that they were the correct springs and showed her how the door would easily close when on the manual setting. He then tried to explain that the damage to the opener could not have been caused by our spring replacement but was a normal wear and tear problem due to the age of the opener. He even offered to replace the worn piece of the opener at a discounted price even though it was not or responsibility or obligation to do so. During this meeting the customer was extremely uncooperative and would not allow the technician to make the small adjustment necessary to correct the spring balance and refused any other offers. Since the customer was still dissatisfied we sent the owner to her home within 30 minutes of the first technician leaving. He also came with numerous offers to rectify the situation ranging from the small adjustment before mentioned to replacing the entire opener at no cost just to appease the customer. These solutions were not even allowed to be heard before the owner was pummeled with threats of negative reviews and accusations of sabotage to the opener. It was at this point that the owner did say that the customer would be sued for slander if she published a review that mentioned anything that was not true. (for example that the original technician was an hour and a half late). We as a company strive to satisfy every customer that we encounter and as our other reviews show, we are very successful at that goal. We are disappointed that this was not the case with this customer but we feel that other factors affected her ability to calmly evaluate the situation and get it resolved properly. We also feel that we did everything in our power to help her as we do for all of our customers."

He didn’t charge that much. It's not his normal rate. He didn’t have to do as much as he thought. He was really good. He explained everything and did a good job. He showed me how to adjust it and lubricate it. With regard to price, he was totally reasonable; it was very good. The quality was very good. He didn't have to do a lot, but it was done very well. He adjusted pretty much everything on it real quick. With regard to responsiveness, he came out right away the next day after I called him. With regard to punctuality, he was actually there early. His professionalism was very good. I would use them again in the future.

Jim is extraordinary on all levels. He is very personable (like talking with an old friend) in addition to being a master in his craft. And talk about punctual! Very professional but so down to earth. He helped me pick out the perfect garage door for my house and it looks beautiful. Added bonus - cool because none of my neighbors have the same door. It gave the house a much needed 'facelift' - Ha! He and one of his staff (I wish I remembered the gentleman's name - he was awesome) removed the old door, installed the new one in addition to a new garage opener under the estimated 2 hours, including hauling the old door and parts away. I am very pleased. And I have to comment on Julie, his office manager - so nice! So look no further, Jim is your man!

I needed a new garage door installation. I called 5 companies, most of them did not call me back. I found Jim, The Garage Door Man on the Internet and Angie's List and his secretary is very responsive as is he about questions and estimates.  His prices are great and, even better he arrives as promised and works quickly. He doesn't try to sell you something you don't need, which is what I really appreciate.  I don't often take the time to write reviews, but this one was worth my time! Plus, he is taking the old door to Mexico to recycle for someone there who needs one. Love it!!!!

Jim, the owner, and his helper were excellent. Jim helped us decide what product to purchase. They knew exactly what they were doing and worked quickly and efficiently. They cleaned up and hauled away our old door and opener. We were very happy with their work, the product, and the price. Jim honored my $50 Angie's List coupon, too (AFTER he has given me his price)! Thank you, Jim!
