They are very professional and the dog enjoys going there. The vet techs and technicians are great with my animal.
I was a bit nervous about the sedation-free cleaning as I wouldn't attempt that on a doberman, but my dog was very calm.
We have taken our cat and our dog to Acacia for all their medical needs since we moved to Escondido in October 2010. We have seen two different vets and a number of vet techs and receptionists, and everyone we've dealt with has been professional, courteous and friendly. They all seem to genuinely care about our animals, and they take the time to explain procedures to us and answer any questions we have. We have also boarded our dog in their and quot;Pet Resortand quot;, and we were very pleased with that experience as well. We have always been able to schedule an appointment at a convenient time, even at short notice. Acacia is a large facility, with a full-service vet office, multiple vets on staff, an animal hospital, a pharmacy, and a boarding facility for dogs, cats, birds, and other animals (they had a pot-bellied pig when we visited!). We have recommended Acacia to family and friends and will continue to do so. We will definitely continue to take our pets there for all their medical care. We love Acacia!!
The Whole Story:
Our cat appeared in the neighborhood shortly after we bought our house (no one knows where she came from). Once we decided to claim her, we called Acacia and got an appointment for that afternoon. Dr. Mendez (who is wonderful!) examined her, estimated that she was about 6 months old, and determined that she had not been spayed. We signed up for their and quot;Kitten Packageand quot;, which included all the shots recommended for the first year, a microchip, and spaying/neutering. They did the microchip and the first round of shots that day, the spaying and 2nd round of shots in a 2nd visit, and the final round of shots and post-surgery check up in a 3rd visit. As an extra bonus, when Acacia implants a microchip, they also register the microchip in Home Again and sign you up for 1 year of Home Again's full service, so we didn't even have to fill out the extra paperwork! (After 1 year, we received the renewal notice from Home Again and got to decide whether or not to renew -- there was no automatic renewal.) The Kitten Package was a lot of money, but all the charges were very clearly broken down. The charge for the whole spaying procedure seemed high to us, but again, the charges were clearly broken down, and the cost for the actual surgery was comparable to other prices we had seen advertised online; charges for anesthesia and things like medical waste disposal made up the difference. We didn't actually investigate other services; we really liked Dr. Mendez, the facility, and the staff, and we had no interest in taking our animals elsewhere. All 3 visits went smoothly, and we always left thinking and quot;We love Acacia!and quot;
We have taken our 10-year-old dog in for her regular shots and also for some minor medical problems. One was the sticker in her ear mentioned above. We called Acacia and were able to get an appointment with Dr. Mendez within the hour. He tried 3 times to remove it with tweezers, without success. He had to anesthetize her to get it out b/c it was lodged right against her ear drum, and it was the same golden color as her fur -- he said he was afraid that he was grabbing her fur along with the sticker, and he couldn't get a good grip on it without brushing her eardrum, so he didn't want to traumatize her or risk puncturing the eardrum by continuing to try. Once she was sedated, he got it out very quickly! She was groggy but otherwise unperturbed after the procedure.
On another occasion, we arrived home late one evening to discover a large mess indicating that our dog had been very sick that day. There was blood mixed in with the vomit and diarrhea, which caused us to panic. We called Acacia's after-hours line and spoke with a vet tech. She very calmly listened to our explanation and asked about the dog's current behavior. By that time, the dog seemed to be just fine, so the tech recommended that we wait until the next day to bring her in. (The only vet on staff that evening was doing emergency surgery on a parakeet, and the tech didn't know how long that would take.) We made an appointment for the next morning; Dr. Mendez was off that day, so we saw Dr. Bones, who was equally wonderful. After the physical exam, Dr. Bones said she probably just ate something she shouldn't have (our house is pretty safe, but she does find things to munch on her walks), and that the blood was likely the result of a burst capillary in her intestines, caused by mild inflammation. Dr. Bones did an excellent job of calming our fears without brushing them off -- she acknowledged that it was scary to see the blood, and reassured us that the most likely cause was something minor that would heal quickly and not result in any long-term problems. She prescribed an anti-inflammatory and a bland diet. We bought enough bland food to last 2 weeks, and returned to regular food after that. Our dog has not had any further problems.
Before we boarded our dog in December, we asked if we could take a look at their facility. They agreed immediately and are definitely used to giving tours (we've seen them give 3 more while sitting in the waiting area). A staff member from the and quot;Pet Resortand quot; showed us around, explained all the different options, and answered all of our questions. Yes, and quot;Pet Resortand quot; sounds a little silly, but they really seem to do wonderful job! There are at least 2 large, fenced, outdoor yards for dogs.
We haven't spent much time price-shopping, but I'm sure you can get vet services more cheaply. However, I gave Acacia an A for price because I absolutely believe that any extra money is well spent. With so many vets on staff, we never have trouble getting an appointment. Having the vet office, hospital, pharmacy, and kennel all on site allows us to take our animals to one place for everything. When we boarded our dog, it was nice to know that if anything had happened to her, they had not only the facilities to care for her but also her medical records. We have also taken advantage of their option to keep our credit card on file so that our regular pet sitter can take either animal to Acacia if anything happens and not have to worry about how to pay for whatever they need. When we boarded the dog, I believe we had the option to pre-authorize any necessary medical treatments up to a certain dollar amount, in the event that we couldn't be reached for approval. (We also had to option of leaving as many contact phone numbers as we wanted.)
We love our pets a lot, and we are happy to spend the money that it takes to keep them happy and healthy. We've met other pet-owners at Acacia who talk about acupuncture for their horses and chemo for their cats, and I don't think we would go quite that far, but everyone at Acacia seems happy to deal with all kinds of pet owners! If you have a pet, I highly recommend Acacia!!!
