We asked for a work estimate to repair/replace our aging roof. Because it has a tile section, a flat section, skylights, and needed gutter work, we wanted some sort of breakdown of the work that needed to be done, since we were not sure if we could do it all at once. After arriving at our house, on time, they told us they had to charge us $250 to do a thorough inspection. Several days late, we got an estimate that was over $20,000. It had almost no explanation of the charges and no itemization at all. We have a small Berkeley house. Another contracter did the work for about half of that. We got much more detailed information about estimated charges from the other roofer who did not charge us for their "inspection."
