Auto Service
I brought in my 06 Passat for routine brake service. I was told that I needed new brake pads and rotors front and rear. I had done some homework, gotten 3 estimates and the price seemed fair. They sounded like they knew what they were doing and the aftermarket parts they will be putting-in were from reputable manufacturers. I had the work done and when I came to pick it up, I was told it was all done but the backing plate had to replaced soon as it was all rusted. They quoted me $400+ (parts + labor) but it'll have t be done another day.
A few days later, I hear a squeaking rhythmic noise from the left front wheel at low speeds. The noise would increase in intensity briefly and disappear when I step on the brakes. The rate of the rhythmic squeaking also increase and decreases directly proportional to the speed of the car. I go back to the shop to have it looked at. First they tell me that I was going to pay a diagnosis fee of (around $120, cant remember). I complained and reminded them that I just had the car serviced. Fee was waived and after a full day of the car being in the shop, I got a call at 5PM stating that it was the backing plate and it needs to be replaced. I was told only the front needs to be replaced. Had it replaced for about $200++, the parts cost $35 and labor some $200 or so for 2 hours of labor.
The following day, I hear the same noise again and I return several days later. They tell me that there was a lot of rust in my brakes and it needs to be cleaned. Estimate $600! I asked if they had cleaned the braked and replaced the backing plate when they first serviced my car, would I have had to pay so much labor costs - the answer was no, I would have saved money since they wouldn't have had to take down the brake assembly only once. I was told the reason why this happened is because my car had so much rust. Figur that, it was my car's fault for not being serviced right the first time around.
I decide enough was enough. I brought my car to the dealer a couple of weeks later and told them about the squeaking noise. They checked it out and told me that the aftermarket brakepads do this all the time. Braking is good mechanically but if I want the noise to go away, replace the pads with genuine VW parts. I did and the nose is gone.
If you need an oil change, Foreign Autohaus is probably OK. If you need other service, I recommend going elsewhere.
