On the second visit, he found a defective thermostat and replaced it for $250. Checking online, after the fact, the thermostat cost $50-$60. This second call should have been in the area of $100, allowing for a side trip to buy a thermostat and a discount since this was a recall.
So, I paid $350 for $175 (at most) worth of service. Lesson learned.
"The first service call was in July 2008 and I found one large window wide open. There were no blinds on the windows of this rental property. After performing a cooling maintenance the house dropped from 89 degrees to 87 degrees. Two weeks later Comfort Solutions was call by the landlord of the rental property. The rental house was warm and again and no window blinds had been installed since my last call. I checked the thermostat and found the thermostat failed to cycle on the 4th attempt. The Customer approve the thermostat replacement. We regret that this customer was not satisfied with our service, Please read our current reports for a more accurate representation of the reputable and reliable service that our company performs."
He called just after noon and said he was on his way. He arrived shortly and examined the air conditioner. He said the unit was new enough that it shouldn't be leaking, but sometimes they do. He told us the price to refill the coolant would be $200.00. We agreed. He proceeded to refill the coolant, but the air was still not cool. He further checked the unit and said, it could be he didn't have enough coolant, or it could be the feeder valve. John said and quot;Let's try the least expensive and easiest solution firstand quot;. He had to go to Sacramento to get more coolant, and said he'd be back as soon as he could. Within an hour and half or so he was back. After putting more coolant in, and having the same result, he looked at the feeder valve again, and said, and quot;It is the feeder valve and I'll have to order the part.and quot; He further said it would take two days to get here. He said he would be able to get the part on warranty, but we have to pay the labor, and the total would be $850.00, but he would give a senior citizen discount of %10. We gulped, but agreed. On the 7th of July he called in the morning and said he'd be here within the hour, and he was. it took most of the day to replace the valve and get the coolant back in, but by the end of the day the house was filled with cool air. In Sacramento and the surrounding areas, it is often well over 100 degrees for days on end, not having an air conditioner is not an option. My husband wrote him a check in the full amount of $850.00, because he felt John was honest with us and tried to get us comfortable as soon as possible.
I'm glad I chose someone who doesn't have anything to gain by selling me a new system. I think I got a good impartial bit of advice. John is a nice guy, and had no problem with me hovering and asking questions. ...and most importantly, the temp is dropping as I type this.
