Tom was easy to talk to and listened to my concerns, and was quick with suggestions and solutions. I required extra long fence posts due to an embankment. Everything on the quote was clear and easy to understand. I had him split up the quote in three sections since I was unsure of how much it would cost. He had no problem with the extra effort and also noted that there are veteran discounts.
I had him do the complete job just over a hundred feet and one gate. He and his guys showed up when they said they would and completed the job in the time frame they promised. My bill was also reduced slightly as they used less materials than expected.
Eight months later the fence looks great as it should. I had a tree contractor out to remove a tree and they ripped out the cable attached to the gate latch. I couldn't find a replacement at the nearby hardware store or the home depot. I sent Tom an email to purchase a replacement. I came home from work to find the new one installed at no charge.
It was a pleasure to do business with a person and a company that still believes in quality and customer satisfaction. Theres not too many out there like that anymore.
It did not go well!
Contractor had met with my neighbor first and then came to meet with us together as we were splitting the cost of the job. We explained what we were looking for and I questioned his original estimate, which seemed high compared to market rates. The contractor submitted a revised bid saying that as we changed the typed of fence, the cost was lower and we accepted his revised proposal. We discussed stain colors, so we assumed staining was included in his estimate. Contractor explained rebuilding the side gate was not a problem at all and provided an estimate to do so, which I accepted.
1. Overall quality of construction of the fence was very rough and poorly finished.
2. Contractor left the worksite and did not supervise his workers.
3. Contractor agreed to fill in spaces against beams so that the fence would provide privacy as previous fence had. Ultimately he never did this.
4. Rebuilt gate on side was a mess. As contractor had left the job site, I saw that his workers were doing the work incorrectly and asked his workers to stop working until I could speak with the contractor the next morning. Worker yelled at me and went on to finish the job incorrectly. The next morning the contractor agreed the work had been done incorrectly and agreed to redo it, but was upset that he had to redo it and upset about the cost of doing so.
5. Contractor came the following day and told me that he would rebuild the gate, replacing lattice work back to original. He told me that they had used the wrong hinges and that he would replace them with stronger hinges, He never did this.We discussed staining the gate so that the new boards would match the replaced boards or staining it a darker color. Contractor alluded to the staining of the entire new fence being a favor he promised my neighbor and was verbal about the job costing him too much.
6. At end of day, contractor was hurried and told me he took off the price of the gate. I believe that he didn't want to have to deal with it. Again he left the worksite while his workers were still here. I assumed that they were going to finish the lattice as he had agreed and that the gate would be stained. I gave him a check as requested.
7. Contractor said he was including the stain on the rebuilt fence for free, like he was doing us a favor, and promised to come back in a week and a half. We believed the staining was included in the cost and part of the job. In an email when I asked about staining the gate, the contractor said that as he had already rebuilt the gate and the side gate (which was part of the main job), the job had cost him more than he thought and he could not afford to stain the gate and wasn't going to do it. I felt that It was not our problem that he scoped the job incorrectly and his workers had to redo shoddy work. By this time I was extremely annoyed, but didn't take action as the job was shared by my neighbor and I wanted to ensure that the contractor would actually show up to complete the job. Then the contractor had a problem with his sprayer which delayed the work another week plus. He could have rented a sprayer to complete the job on time, if he cared anything about customer service.
8. Contractor finally showed up 2.5 weeks after the original date that he said and performed the job, while I was away.
9. When I arrived back from a business trip, I found that the staining job was extremely poor, blotchy, they missed areas and the color was off, It was bright orange. It was as though they did not have enough stain and tried to stretch what they had. Picture a bad sray on tan with missing patches and streaks, that's what it looks like
10. The contractor spilled stain on my slate patio which ruined multiple tiles, missed the whole bottom section of the other gate that was to be included in the staining and sprayed stain on my house. Clearly they didn't mask or put down any drop cloths.
9. The contractor never followed up and I don't think he was even here to see the stain job that his workers performed.
His tag line for his business is "We take pride in our quality, craftmanship and customer service" I do not feel that he delivered on any of these principles.
Extremely disappointing experience. I now have to restain the fence, restain the side fence and botched gate and replace slate tiles. Not the outcome I was looking for.
If you do still decide to work with this contractor I'd recommend getting a VERY DETAILED itemized list of what is and isn't included, demand that he supervise his workers the entire time, be present the entire time to supervise yourself, don't have high expectations for a professionally finished job and do not pay him until the job is completed to your satisfaction.
