Inspection turned up no problems, aside from fuel pump recall, which I could have worked on free of charge at any dealership.
Bought car on this information.
When I had car serviced for the recall part, the mechanics inspected and found serious problems the first inspection missed.
1.  3 tail light bulbs out, including a brake light.
2.  Suspension - sway bar links.
3.  Suspension - right inner and outer CV boots.
Not knowing much about cars, I cannot say whether it is reasonable to expect the 1st inspection to have spotted the suspension problems, but the fact remains that the 2nd inspection found them without any trouble.
However, missing the tail lights problem was quite serious.  I was alarmed when I was (days later) told of this problem, as my life had been at risk.  It is probably also against the law to sell someone a car without fully functional tail lights and let them drive away.
My car is currently in a 3rd shop being repaired, and the estimate came to a shocking $2,700, not to mention the week delay.  Plainly, this development is precisely what one seeks to avoid when paying for a car to be inspected.  There is no way I would have bought the car if I had known the truth.
