Tech said that the Freon leaked out and that the compressor burned out because of it. Quoted $4800 to replace compressor and recharge, or $7,000 for a new AC unit. Got a second opinion and hired a handyman. Turns out the breaker was tripped and needed some fiddling with. AC works great now. Can’t believe they were going to lie about what was wrong to replace the whole AC. Just because it was an old unit. Get a second opinion for them if they tell you something similar.

Electric attic fan is working, but not at the same cooling level as the previous fan.

Qualtech gave me a verbal estimate of $1000 over the phone.  The bill at the end of the installation was $1678.  I complained to Mr. Alvarez, and he told me that he had could not possibly have done the job for $1000, and his company needs to make a 40% profit on jobs.  Over the phone, he told me that the unit with expedited shipping was $745, there was an additional charge of $98, and I believe another materials charge of $75.  The installer was paid $200 according to Mr. Alvarez.  Adding 40% to these costs would bring the total cost to $1565.20, not $1698.My mistake was not asking for a written quote. I suggested we split the difference of the $700 dispute since I should have asked for a written quote (and Qualtech should have provided one without my having to ask). Mr. Alvarez plans to send me a rebate of $100, but since he is making a 65.8% profit on this job and did not provide an estimate in writing, I regard his resolution as insufficient
