Estimator came by promptly and gave us a contract price for the easy installation ($3125) & time-and-materials for the other. The straightforward, basement, replacement was done very quickly. The other furnace took days to do: apparently the dimensions weren't the same as the old one, and it would be nearly unserviceable if installed in the same place. So they built a new platform in the crawl space, rerouted the ductwork and gas & cut a new return-air grate through the wall. The new arrangement is actually a lot better than the old in terms of access to the machinery. They put down plastic to guard the carpet & were very good about cleanup. Despite the sticker shock, it was probably the right approach.
Description of Work: Had TWO furnaces replaced. One was a vertical installation in an easily-accessed basement. The other was horizontal in a crawlspace between stories. This one was always very hard to get to because it was a very tight fit. Access to this is by a small door inside the house.
