Software needs to be protected for the copyright holders. Yet the customer needs the ability to upgrade there hardware in case of failure. It seems hard for me to imagine a person installing a software product on a specific computer and using that computer for the next 5, 10, 15? years? I don't want support, just the ability to use the software I originally purchased and was happy with. At this point I would not recommend anyone purchase the software they are currently trying to sell or lease.
Description of Work: In 2008 MashOn, Inc. then known as Planetwide Games, sold a software product called Comic Book Creator 2. Having purchased Comic Book Creator 1 and enjoying it, I purchased the second version and have used it since 2008. In 2009 Planetwide, now Mashon, ended support for their software products. I wasn't too concerned since the product performed well and to my expectations. However, on 10/30/11, the software program ceased to function. The error message indicated that it could not activate. It seems that the serial number, received in the software box when purchased, needs to contact a computer server over the internet to properly activate and be used. Contact with Mashon has resulted in the advice to "contact the reseller I purchased the product from". Retailers do not have access to the information necessary to handle this type of problem, it is essentially a programming decision to 'protect' the software from illegal copying. All companies do this, and all companies eventually move on with different products, however, I still have a copy of Windows 98 that will still install and work even though Microsoft no longer supports this product. The same goes for several other software products I own. Essentially, there are going to be lots of customers so stranded.

Response from Mashon
As of December 31, 2009 Planetwide Games, Inc. ceased to support all desktop versions of Comic Book Creator (CBC) and Comic Book Creator 2 (CBC2). We ceased selling these products to retailers on December 31, 2008 and no longer have any resources with the appropriate knowledge to support these products. In addition, neither of these products will run effectively on Microsoft's Vista or Windows 7 operating systems which make them impossible to support. If you have recently purchased this software and are having issues with it, you need to contact the retailer and return it with them. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. With this being said, our company no longer has anything to do with Comic Book Creator and subsequently cannot answer any questions regarding the program or offer any support regarding the software.
