Needed to paint some trim, baseboard and end caps. My house is 20 years old and some of the trim has seen better days...so was hoping I wouldn't have to use a full or semi-gloss to finish the job. I had been using Valspar Signature High-Def semi-gloss with good results, but had read online that commercial paint stores (e.g., Sherwin Williams, Dunn-Edwards, etc) had better paint and had more sheens to choose from.
I walked in the store and was helped by a blond guy that appeared to be the store manager as he was the only employee in the store wearing dress clothes. You would think this would be a good thing as he would be setting expectations for other associates, but that was not the case... I explained the project and that I was hoping to find something in a sheen other than full gloss and...expecting to hear something intelligent...instead he stated "go with a flat then". This was the worst advice possible so I, the amateur, had to explain why that was a bad idea. So then he recommends "full gloss"...basically he didn't care what I bought and simply wanted me to move along. I start looking around on the counter and found a guide from Dunn-Edwards that gives me the various options that Dunn Edwards recommended (btw - flat was NOT one of the options). I should also note that the employee didn't hand me this brochure as he should have, but I found it on my own.
Once I decided on a sheen, I asked for a pint of Swiss Coffee and he asked why I needed it tinted if I am just trying to figure out what sheen I wanted. Patiently, I explained that I wasn't going to spend $500 on paint without knowing whether the sheen AND color matched...Ugh. Lazy ignorant people are the absolute worst!
End story, I like the quality of Dunn-Edwards paint but the store employee I dealt with was laziest and most incompetent person I have ever met. I wont be shopping there ever again.
