I was referred to Martinez Stair Co. by Danville Hardwood in Danville, CA and I placed a call to the company soon after. Taro Martinez returned my call for service some months ago and gave me an initial quote over the phone/email after providing him pictures of my stairwell. He personally came out when available for a more detailed quote and answered any of my and my wife's questions. He is a very personable guy. We finally accepted his quote and was given a soft start date. He is very busy and at the time of this review is booked up until August. Taro answered questions and changes along the way within a reasonable time frame...within a few hours to a few days.
After a couple of delays with weather and other jobs we finally had a solid start date about a 3-4 weeks past our soft date. Taro Martinez and coworker Carlos came out for 4 days consecutively to perform the work stated above. No other subcontracted people came in their place...it is Taro's company and he with Carlos does the work, quality work at that. Every time I've hired somebody in the past, the person giving the quote is not the person doing the work. They were both punctual each day, arriving as promised, and cleaned up any major debris after each days work.
I am a very picky person, anal really, and although not all of the work was perfect and I mean perfect (a nick here, a minor gap there), it was pretty darn near perfect! I can definitely live with the few imperfections. The only complaint which is partially my fault for not insisting is that I wished the steps were done in the sequence of capping the step, then riser, then next step, then riser etc. It would have eliminated the few minor gaps where the step meets the riser. We will be tiling the riser in the future, so in the end that will be a mute point.
Overall an excellent experience with the company and with Taro and Carlos as people as well. They are both nice upstanding guys as if some of your friends came over to help you work on your house. The entire job went smoothly and seemed to flow. The price was fair...over $7000 is not chump change for me, but my wife and I went for it and the open stairwell has dramatically changed the feel of our house. One of the very few times I hired somebody and I felt the money I spent was well deserved. After it was all said and done, they were worth the wait. Good work is worth that.
Taro took the time to lesson to what or vision was and spent several hours with my wife going over each detail, making sure he understood exactly what she wanted, and honestly this was a huge factor in retaining his services. Taro understood our budget constants and worked with us to achieve the finished product we were looking for at a budget we could afford. Taro and crew, were friendly, punctual and took the time to keep the job area as clean as possible while working. I have had mixed experience with contractor over the past few months, most of them lack the professionalism, attention to detail and punctuality Taro and crew brought to this project. I am going to hire Martinez Stair Company agian in the near future to do some other finish carpentry for me. My only regret is i didn't find Taro and Company sooner.
Well they did more... I am doing my own carpentry projects in the house, and Taro was very generous with his time by sharing tips and trick to help me solve my carpentry problems.
We would definitively consider them for other fine carpentry projects.
