Both times the finished work was great, clean, our house interior looked amazing after they were done, Joes' color advice was right on!
The Kitchen Job was a lot of work, it only took a week, all the cabinets/doors /drawers are prepped and sprayed at their shop
and the rest of the work is done on site. The crew was so nice and very professional, they arrive on time and leave your home clean.
I'm so happy with my cabinets they look brand new, perfect with my new island.
We plan on painting the exterior of our home in the fall/2015 and we WILL be using Joe and Jill at Final Coat painting again.
Soon after contact, owner Joe Sabel met with us to discuss what work and materials would be included. He is very knowledgeable, detail-oriented, experienced and easy to talk to. (He had been highly recommended by a different type of contractor we had used recently.) He is "no-nonsense," avoiding disputes by having the owner fill out and sign a list indicating what will be painted what color--a great idea.
We did our part by cutting back foliage and moving items away from the building per our contract. The powerwash was very effective.
Joe's brother Tom (an amazing painter) was the foreman on the job. He had a good eye for advising us about minor changes to the initial plans that would benefit the final outcome. Although the other men who worked on the job changed a bit over the few days, they all worked well together--all very experienced painters with high standards--polite with great work ethic.
I was home while they worked; the prep was extensive (see above). When I brought something new to their attention, they responded. Unlike some other contractors, they genuinely care about the property, protecting landscaping and urging a careful owner walk-through to catch minor omissions at the end. They left us plenty of touch-up paint.
Joe tries really hard to please the owner. Although he does not normally include painting the downspouts the trim color, he was flexible and agreed to add that (per my request) at a reasonable hourly charge--a very fair solution. (Normally owners prefer that they are painted the wall color.) How a contractor negotiates issues that come up later is as important as painter expertise, and this company scored highly in both arenas.
I am confident from my observation of the process and from dealing with Joe and Tom that our classy new paint job was a wise investment. Our neighbors are impressed.
(This job initially $4125 without the added options of minor carpentry and tedious contrast-trim painting of downspouts.)
I'll update with progress....Waiting over nine months for J&J to do the right thing.
Oh....the two guys who screwed up my job in less than two days were drinking and obnoxious, and J&J is telling a story about how his brother Tom, and Hugo, both happened to quit (after my job).
Jill Sabel came with Rick 7/20/13 to assess the job and "help him" do the work, and made a mockery of the two hours they were here, also dripping more paint on the driveway and patio than Tom and Hugo did in two days. So Johnny George, who just happens to also have a Kelly-Moore account, was gracious enough to come here for the second time knowing the problems, to give an objective opinion over what he could see needed to be done. He found numerous places all around the house where the paint still needs to be scraped off debris or where it is peeling, including where Jill assessed and supervised the scraping on 7/20. J&J is still not taking this seriously.
UPDATE 6/22/2016: This is my new information about the experience I had with the provider: The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) finally issued a warning to J&J in June 2015, Case No. NA2012-18268, for "Departure from accepted trade standards for good and workman like construction". Then I paid $3150 to have another company restore the entire paint job (except the gutters and eaves), because paint was peeling off all over the house. I paid J&J $2808, never paying the last $807. Problems kept appearing because of their lack of prep work, "completing" the job in two short days instead of the 4-5 days Joe Sabel (owner) told me they would be working here. Two guys spent only four hours prepping my 1180 sq. ft. house, which was supposed to include scraping old paint, caulking cracks, and priming, after taping up all the windows and doors. Their Diamond Certified brochure and ad boasts about their prep work. Joe Sabel ignored my protests and bullied me to go forward when he showed up with the color paint, applying all these things the same day, when his ads even state they never caulk and paint the same day. The Small Claims Court awarded me a measly $1250 ($50 for court fees), entering the judgment 1/11/16, Case No. MSC15-0862. The CSLB sent J&J a Notice of Construction Related Judgment on 3/10/16, telling them when they'd have to pay in full before having their license suspended, after I received only $100 after 45 days and sent the documentation to the CSLB. J&J defied the Court by not resolving the payment within 30 days. In response to the CSLB Notice, J&J sent me a bad check to pay in full. I contacted Diamond Certified, the Better Business Bureau, CSLB, and Angie's List. After hearing from Diamond Certified, they finally paid in full. This job should have cost $3615 (J&J's quote was high because Sabel said they had to spend more time doing prep work) and should have been done in November 2012. It turned into a three year and four month disaster and fight and cost $4758 ($2808 + $3150 - $1200 judgment). I couldn't restore the job till after the CSLB issued a warning, otherwise I would have "destroyed the evidence", so it was finally restored in July 2015. J&J also had a legal service send letters three times threatening to sue me, twice if I didn't remove my reviews. I guess that's why there aren't other bad reviews....
"The beauty of social media....anyone can write anything about any company leaving the owners guilty until proven innocent. This person fails to tell the truth in this matter and has made up numerous lies and is portreying herself as the victom. When the truth is we have gone back on four separate occasions trying to resolve these very small issues. Each time a new issue seems to arise, this time mold at the DIRT LINE. The other truth is that she will not allow the actual owners/decision makers of the company to assess the issues, insisting to only allow our young foreman to do the assessment/work alone.....NOT GOING TO HAPPEN given the mental state of this person. The first painting contractor started this job, worked for 3 days preparing the house and spent hundreds of dollars in materials, on the 3rd day he gave her the deposit back and ran, very smart decision. As a 10 year Diamond Certified company and a licensed painting contractor since 1991, we in all of these years in business, have never had a customer so difficult to deal with."
