A friend recommended Johnathan Youngs and his company, High Performance Heating and Air, to us, and we are so glad we found him! Johnathan Youngs is a truly honest, highly skilled HVAC technician and sole practitioner/company owner. He is efficient, fast, smart, a good communicator, and a wonderful HVAC repairman, installer, and wizard - and even better - he is honest. Go to his website and educate yourselves about the industry, then give him a call. You will hear back from him promptly, and he will help you as soon as humanly possible. He can walk you through issues on the phone and help you diagnose the situation. Sometimes you can fix the problem yourself and he will not charge you for his time (which he just did for us over the weekend, when our AC conked out when it was 104 outside). If he does come, he will give you 100%, level with you, and repair or replace as needed (as he did for us last July). He works hard and is a true expert. He is a perfectionist and a truth teller and you will be so grateful you found him.

John was easy to deal with. He was pragmatic and upfront with costs. Over the phone, he worked to see if he could help me to fix it and avoid a service call. He kept us updated with the appointment status and let us know what was working, what wasn't and what might go wrong in the future. He definitely was not upselling, just advising.

I can only strongly agree with all the people who had reviewed John (High Performance Heating and Air) previously and had given him rave reviews.  He was a pleasure to deal with: responsive, willing to spend time to provide answers to all the questions I had, extremely knowledgeable and professional, and also very honest in his evaluation for the best solution.
Here are the facts.  My furnace started to sound loud, so I called the regular company that I had used for performing regular "tune ups".  They told me that I need to replace the "inducer motor assembly" ($1500) or that I should consider replacing the whole unit because it is "near the end of its life" anyway ($4000+).  So, I wanted to get a second opinion and, after seeing great reviews about John, I called him.  Given the potential replacement costs, I was willing to spend extra $100 (John's trip fee) and I'm very glad I did, as John has saved me hundreds of dollars!  Within 5 minutes of checking the furnace, he diagnosed the noise problem as being the result of water that had collected inside the blower fan.  He checked the tubing that is responsible for draining the water and, sure enough, it was clogged.  He carefully took it off (water came out), cleaned it up, put it back and the furnace now sounds as quiet as new.  The whole thing took less than 30 minutes, plus John performed additional checks on the furnace and gave it a clean bill of health.  He told me the furnace could easily be good for another 10-15 years.  Seriously, I can't add any more praise for John than had been done already, but he is awesome.  I will use him always in the future, whenever I need HVAC help.  And I certainly won't be calling the other company for "tune ups" anymore.  Thanks John!!!

Johnathan Youngs of High Performance Heating and Air is one of those
rarest of contractors: a total professional, a deep well of knowledge, a
straight-shooter, and honest. He's no-nonsense, tells it like it is,
and isn't part of fear-based, manipulative contractor culture designed
to soak consumers for every last cent. Johnathan takes a highly
methodical approach to finding problems and addressing them. He doesn't
do anything he doesn't need to do. He understands that some fixes often
create more problems than what said fix solves. I highly recommend him.
We're outside of Jonathan's service area, but we insist on using him
because he's the best. Don't hesistate for a second to put your trust in
his services. If you want it done right, he's the guy. Seriously.

I called High Performance, I believe it was "John" who is the owner/technician. He gave the the estimate for just coming out which I agreed to, came out at exactly the time he said he would arrive, evaluated my problem and told me it could likely be fixed quite easily for the cost of the service call. Now this was about a year ago, so my memory is a bit fuzzy on the details, but as I remember it, I was more than willing to give the simple fix a try after he explained the problem to me. I has worked perfectly for the entire year since then. I would certainly call him again to do the big job of replacement when the time comes. It was a totally excellent experience!

I got estimates from 3 other companies, all of whom recommended full replacement of the entire system with a heat pump system for $6900 to $8000. John arrived on time, observed the problem and the lack of problems in other areas of the furnace, alleviated my fire danger fears, pointing out that as the system was all metal there was not much of anywhere for fire to develop and pointed out of course that the circuit breakers would cut off the power in case something else went wrong. He certainly seemed to me, with my very limited knowledge heating and cooling systems, totally honest and straightforward, unlike one of the other salesmen in particular. He was thoroughly professional and I will call him 1st if any future problems develop. After all, the system is 40 years old. He did say he thought his price for full replacement would be higher than the others, should the need arise, but this little repair gave me confidence in his knowledge and abilities to think going with High Performance Heating and Air---

Wow, this guy is an utlimate pro. Living in Orinda we seem to get overpriced service but he diagnosed the problem with the thermosstat and also adjusted the furnace settings so it was not overheating/overblowing. Gave us other very useful advice on airduct cleaning and filters. Amazingly our heating bills are $150 lower this month with the same usage. Honest guy who won't do you wrong.

He is knowledgeable. I think he knew what he was doing. He did a good job. He came out the same day and didn’t even charge us extra, so that was really nice. We didn’t go with them because we realized that we had home owner’s warranty insurance that covered our furnace, so we are going with another company.

They were wonderful. The service was personal and they went out of their way to do anything that I wanted. There were two special things that they did: One, we wanted to update the system to stay cool in the hottest weather, now the temperature outside can get all the way up to 105 and it will still be 72 inside. The other thing is they recommend an air filter, which takes all of the dust out of the air. My girlfriend has allergies and she loves to get home because she can finally breathe.

My 6-year-old Payne High Efficiency furnace stopped working on one of the coldest Saturdays of the year(47 degrees in the house when I woke up). After I replaced the filter and reassembled the furnace, it worked for the rest of the day, but was out again on Sunday. At this point, huddled over my gas stove for warmth, I consulted Angie's, found High Performance, and called, expecting at best an answering service. Mr. Youngs, the owner, answered the phone himself and agreed to come out on Monday. Mr. Youngs arrived promptly, knew exactly what the problem was-a faulty relay-and how to repair it, and had the required part with him. He also switched out my existing programmable thermostat for a more sophisticated one which I had previously purchased, but never installed(and he wasn't going to charge me!). He was extremely knowledgeable and professional, explained exactly what he was doing and why, and even asked me whether I wanted to keep the part he'd removed. Additionally, he explained the differences between different furnace brands and components, explained what part of mine was likely to fail next(the ignition switch, while being careful to explain that he wasn't trying to sell me a new one)inspected the rest of the furnace, and tested the new thermostat in both heating and cooling modes. The printer in his company vehicle wasn't working, so he took my e-mail address in order to send my invoice. All in all, very impressive!
Response from HIGH PERFORMANCE HEATING & AIR

"THANKS FOR THE GOOD WORD. I GOT A NEW PRINTER IN THE VAN. :) PLUS, JUST FOR CLARITY'S SAKE, THAT WAS ACTUALLY A HOT SURFACE IGNITER THAT I WAS REFERRING TO. THE HSI TAKES THE PLACE OF THE PILOT IN MODERN FURNACES. THE OLD ONES ALL EVENTUALLY WEAR OUT. FORTUNATELY THEY'VE COME UP WITH A NEW STYLE (SILICON NITRIDE RATHER THAN THE OLD SILICON CARBIDE) THAT IS SUPPOSED TO LAST LONGER. -JOHN"

Great. John saved me the cost of a new heater, which I didn't want or need. He could easily have told me a second visit was needed, but didn't. I felt I got old-fashioned craftsmanship rather than a quick and dirty installation of a new heater by some technician and saved a whole lot of money. He will also explain what is going on with the work. He also put my thermostat in order.

For what we received, the cost was quite reasonable. He selected and installed only the best (not the most expensive) components, suggested ways to avoid costs and made modification that improved both heating and A/C performance. We added the Aprilaire air cleaner and found it much better than the filters we'd been using previously. Except for the cold air or heating, we can no longer hear when the unit is running inside -- it's very quiet. John has recommended ways to save on the Aprilaire filters, worked with us by e-mail to resolve issues and recently installed a new fan motor on the old condenser unit rather than suggesting that we simply install a new unit. John is honest, straightforward and will work with you rather than simply trying to sell you more equipment. He has suggestions on A/C and heating on his website. I would find it hard to work with another vendor at this point. I'd highly recommend John for any related project, of any size.
