Phil did a very good job with the installation and his prices were quite reasonable. My only minor complaint was that the baseboards had some dirty fingerprints, smudging from him working which probably stood out because we had just had the house painted. Overall, I was quite satisfied with the work.
This is a review for work done quite some time ago so the date and cost of service are approximate.
I looked all over for someone to convert my carpeted stairs over to hardwood stairs. My husband was going to do it but I really wanted a professional job so I went to Angie's list and am I glad I did! Phil came out and gave me a great price for the install job (my husband did the stain on the wood). Phil worked within my timeframe and when we ran into a problem Phil worked with us to do the job over 2 days instead of 1 and he didn't charge us more money...Phil is the best!!
We had already had the new floors put in but the trim wasn't completed because we were waiting for the stairs to be completed and Phil finished the trim at no additional charge. Phil knew how worried I was about damaging my new floors and he covered the floors the whole time he worked. I am so grateful for Phil and I have already recommended him to my friends. Phil gets a all around 10 from me...Thanks Phil :-)
We live out of town and called him the week prior to our coming into town to select the carpet and linoleum. He was willing to schedule the installation within two days of our signing the contract.
Phil arrived on time, was very professional and did quick work. It took him a day to lay the carpet and a half day to install the linoleum in the double wide mobile home. We had an issue with the bathroom floor which he was able to resolve efficiently.
Phil was willing to drive an hour from the Sacramento area to where our mobile home is located. We will definitely hire Phil for our next job!
I contracted with Phil in September of 2013 to install a vinyl plank floor, including removing/replacing all baseboards, which I would paint while they were off. I purchased the flooring materials directly from Home Depot, but one stair nosing piece was on back order. Before contracting, Phil and I discussed this and he agreed to put the majority of the floor in, then come back and place the stair nosing when it arrived. He gave me a price break for removing the carpet and laminate flooring in advance, which I did. I considered the agreed upon price fair and reasonable; it was ball-park what I was quoted from other providers, and I liked that he would do the work himself.
Phil was responsive, friendly and sociable, and did a good job on the floor; other than a couple lumpy spots and some small areas that lifted right away, and some damage to the walls where the baseboard was removed, the floor is very nice. I had a first coat of paint on the baseboards when Phil was finishing the floors; we agreed that he would replace the baseboards when he returned to place the stair nosing which would give me time to put the second coat on. At that time Home Depot showed the piece available at the end of November on their website.
I suggested withholding $100 from our $1500 agreed upon price, to be paid when the job was complete, as by personal policy I do not pay 100% until a job is complete and this amount seemed very minimal. Phil acted surprised and offended, and questioned how I could not trust him to come back and finish. Feeling guilty and badly for implying that I did not trust him, I paid the full $1500 and did not ask for a written acknowledgement of our agreement for the remaining work. I told him I would let him know as soon as the part arrived and we parted on good terms, or so I thought.
The stair nosing did not become available at the end of November, or December; I updated Phil periodically with voicemails to let him know that I was continuing to follow up on the part, which finally came available the middle of February. I called Phil immediately to tell him I was ordering, and to try to set an appointment to place the stair nosing and replace the baseboards. I was able to reach him by phone, and he said he was not busy and it would be best to wait till the materials arrived, then make the appointment. They arrived about 2 weeks later. From then on, I only got Phil?s voicemail, leaving repeated messages that the parts were here and I wanted to schedule the appointment to finish the work. He never called back. One time, about 6 weeks after the materials arrived, Phil did answer, but when I introduced myself the phone went dead. I called right back ? straight to voicemail, no returned call.
This continued until today when Phil did call me back, and said that due to the fact that the baseboards weren?t ready for him to install the last day he was at my house, and more than seven months have gone by, he was not willing to complete the work. When I objected, and tried to remind him of our agreement when I wrote the check for the full amount, he called me a hardheaded and stubborn woman and said he would not do the work. He said I had not done my homework and had the baseboards ready for him the day he finished the floor, so he was not obligated to replace them now. I asked him to hear me out; he said he wouldn?t have a discussion with a child and hung up on me.
If, on the last day that Phil was at my house, he had told me it was even possibly a now-or-never on replacing the baseboards, I?d have had him put them up with one coat of paint, no problem. That is not what happened; to the contrary, he indicated that it would be nice to work a shorter day that day, not having to do the base. If at any time of my waiting for the materials to arrive, he had contacted me and said the delay was impacting him, I would have completely understood and arranged for him to come do the baseboards, and probably would have removed the stair nosing requirement from the contract, since it wasn?t his fault I couldn?t get my hands on it.
I am very sorry and disappointed to be posting this message, but legitimately, that is what Angie?s List is about. If nothing goes wrong, I am sure you will have a good experience with Phil. As you can see, he has a great standing here on Angie?s List. I myself would have given him an A or at worst a B, had I been able to get the piece I needed sooner from Home Depot. However, if there are issues, you may get a complete personality change that you would have never seen coming.
I have gotten some value from this experience, however, and it may save me much more than the few hundred dollars it will cost me to get this job finished. In the future, if anyone tries to make me feel badly for ?not trusting? them, I will remember that a contractor should never agree to accept full payment for incomplete work, and I will stick to my policy. I have also developed a new personal policy ? when anyone with whom I contract and pay money won?t return calls, insults me verbally, and then hangs up on me, it?s an automatic F. I hope this does not happen to you and that you, like the other reviewers, have a good experience with this contractor.
Phil met with us the same day I called. He provided us with tips and suggestions as to the layout that really helped. His installation price was very fair. When we told him we had laminate already picked out, Phil looked at our sample and said that was a good choice (no hard selling). He even offered to pick it up himself.
The job took 3 days. He started the job within a week of hire and he and his son showed up on time each day. They were very pleasant and helpful in moving bulky furniture.
The whole experience was very pleasant. We are very happy with the results. We would definitely use him again should the need arise. This guy is top notch!
I would highly recommend Phil Richardson to do flooring install. He went out of his way (coming back without charging us) to make sure the product we installed would be a product we would be happy with. Initially we had purchased some cheaper laminate from a off branded Home Depot wholesale place in Rancho off of Mather. Starting with the install, he got about 1/3 of the way through and stopped the job to tell me the issues we would have with this laminate. He simply stated that we are not going to be happy and due to the defects in the butt joints (I believe) and poor design these have a higher likely hood of popping out.
He assisted us with finding laminate at a great price as well that would hold well, look just as nice (same style). He came back and installed the second time and installed the flooring. He was awesome!
Honestly, I couldn't recommend a contractor any higher/better/more than Phil with flooring install. He has 30+ years of experience and he simply is an honest hard working guy with a great attitude.
When we first contacted Phil he quoted us a price that was half of what 3 installers from Home Depot were asking. Nice start, but what sold us on Phil was he told us what we needed to hear not what we wanted to hear. We told him that we already had the linoleum and he asked what kind. Turns out we bought flooring/shelving linoleum. He politely told us that he would install the flooring but it was an inferior product that we would probably not be happy with long term. He then told us the right kind of flooring to buy and where to buy it. The new flooring was less expensive and of better quality.
AND NOW PHIL SEALS THE DEAL!!!
He comes over to do the install and immediately notices the floor is sloping. Obvious once he pointed it out. He said that subflooring was not his expertise and we should have a contractor look at it and then he would come back to do the install. Since we are renters we turned the problem over to our landlord and she had her people do all the repairs. So even though Phil did not do the repairs, due to his honesty and professionalism, he is in our contact list if any future flooring needs arise. And we will not hesitate to use and recommend him in the future!!!
prompt in returning calls, he gave us a thorough and accurate estimate,
and he was honest about not having installed our particular flooring
product before. He also offered suggestions when we asked for
guidance. Phil and his team were able to install 1000 square feet in one day, and they even cleaned up well!
