At that time we were also updating our kitchen, and Ray specifically requested to arrange his schedule after the kitchen work was completely done. Unfortunately, the tile worker for the kitchen missed their schedule and we were stuck in between Ray's schedule and uncertainty from the tile worker. In the end, we worked the schedule out for everyone.
Ray came with an assistant to remove the carpets. Then he found out that the condition of the floor was worse than he thought, that he had to revise his pricing. We were overwhelmed and anxious because it was getting closer to our move in day, we thought we got a done deal, and finding another service in that time frame was not possible. We went with Ray and got him to start immediately. We agreed on color but then later needed to change to deeper because of the condition. We are happy with the final color.
We have a few issues with the floors and Ray has been willing to help. We had visitors to our house that pointed to us that there are a lot of visible scratches and circle marks all over the floor from sanding. We mentioned it to Ray later, he said it's something unavoidable. He did some replacements of damage floor. Apparently his assistant installed the new pieces, a few nails were not in deep enough and kept coming up. Later upon contacting Ray, he came to knock the nails down again and also to solve other issues.
We had problem with the transition pieces from hardwood to tile that were left out initially. Concerned with safety issue, we contacted a few other wood floor service providers, they advised us to discuss with Ray for the best solution. Fortunately, my father is a wood furniture crafter, and my father handmade them for us. Ray stained and installed them. There were also a few stains on the wall and bottom part of door jams from the staining process (we had painting job done first before floor) not a big deal, my father and I did the touch up of the painting.
Ray is nice to called again later to check in on the floor. To date we still have problem with the nail keeps coming up surface, and the issue with the filler in one split part of the wood that broken apart into pieces and is now mostly gone. Ray said he will come to put in a different kind after the cold wet weather past.
We learned so much from this experience. Thank you Ray for your efforts and for being helpful and informative.
Oakridge Hardwood Flooring is definitely recommended service.
Ray met with us on a Saturday morning and talked to us about his process, how long things would take, what we needed to do before he came and answered all of our questions. After discussing the four companies we met with, we decided to go with Ray and started work a week later. Ray and his assistant showed up on time, helped us move the last few items that we couldn't get on our own, labeled the baseboards that had to be moved so they could be put back in the right place (above & beyond the call of duty here!), they were diligent in ensuring the floors were done to our satisfaction, and they stayed in contact with us throughout the week to make sure we knew how things were progressing. On top of that, he nailed in the baseboards that we had cut and fit into several rooms of our house, but he had never gotten to the point of nailing themin - they look great next to the beautiful refinished floors. Ultimately we went with a dark walnut color and a satin poly coat. Ray and his assistant took the floors down to the bare wood, applied the stain, let it dry and then did the sanding/poly coats - this was all done over the course of a week. A few weeks after the floors were done, we noticed a small shiny spot on the living room floor about the size of a quarter that we couldn't get rid of. Ray met me at the house one afternoon and quickly took care of it by lightly sanding the finish by hand and putting a fresh satin finish poly coat over that spot - you can't even tell it was ever shiny. I absolutely love our floors! I really can't praise Ray enough, he did an amazing job and we love the floors even more now that he's worked his magic on them. Everyone who comes over to our house absolutely loves the way the floors have turned out. Ray did a high quality job at a fair price. If my friends ever need work done on their hardwood floors, I'll be sending them straight to Ray - you really can't go wrong with Ray. Hands down, he's the best.
I hired Ray to install engineered hardwood throughout my house except for the bathrooms. He provided great advice on the type of wood and glue I should install. Ray even called the vendor to help me get an additional discount for the materials.
The installation project was very difficult for the following:
1) The wood is laid out diagonally throughout the house. Ray helped me determined what the angle of the wood should be. It looks beautiful.
2) The concrete flooring was not smooth or clean. Ray cleaned and ground the concrete without charging extra.
In addition, he did a great job installing the baseboards. The baseboards are even throughout the house. Ray also installed the hardwood as tight to the edges as possible to minimize the need for t-moldings.
The house is under construction and there were a couple areas that required Ray to come back to the job to complete the installation. I had to pay him in full after the first phase since the delays were not his fault. Admittedly, I was a little nervous. To Ray's credit, he would call me to check on the status so he could complete the job. When I did call him, he came timely to complete the installation. Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication and he cut the wood around an entryway cabinet instead of laying the wood below the cabinet. Instead of fighting me on who was responsible, he came back at 6 AM on a Monday to re-do the installation.
As I said, I'm going through new construction and it's been a nightmare. There are very few ethical vendors in the housing industry. I feel very fortunate to have worked with Ray.
If you need hardwood flooring, go with Ray. Your floors will be beautiful.
floors. This ended up to be a very costly mistake. Not only did my
handyman not do it, he hired a day-worker to do the job. The worker did
not know how to use a rented sander, but stained my floor without
consulting me for the color! I was shocked to no end. I ended up
browsing Angie's list for the best possible person to redo my floors and
Ray was the pick because he had very high rating for the particular job
that I needed. Ray was a professional all around. He was concerned
about the damage to my floor, and carefully refinished it giving me a
floor that looked like it is brand new. He was very nice, very
thorough, and best of all gave me the best price. I am ecstatic about
his performance! Thank you, Ray! You saved my floor!
He said the floor would be fine after sanding, a few boards would need to be replaced, he could replace the old molding and shoe with paint grade replacements, and we would need three reducers for doorway transitions. He said if I wanted the new floor to match the tongue and groove floor in our den, he'd have to use a water based sealer, which would require extra buffing - three times between coats, and it would probably take he and his helper three days to finish the job. He was willing to move a couple of pieces of furniture, and told me how he'd tape plastic up to keep the dust out of the rest of the house.
He also said our job was smaller than his usual minimum, but that he thought he could fit it in between a couple of larger jobs he had scheduled. I told him there was no big rush, and I'd call him when we got back from our vacation home, and see what his schedule was like. Before we left, I had a couple of other companies bid the job, but even though their estimates were lower, I didn't feel confident in them, so decided to go with Ray if he could do the job before September.
I called Ray in August, and he said he'd be able to come over the following Monday. He and his helper showed up exactly on time then, (and every day), and Ray looked over the floor again, showing me details of several things and asking how I wanted to deal with them. He really seemed to think of everything, and it was evident he'd had a lot of experience and liked to think ahead to make sure he knew what my thoughts were on smaller details. (This is pretty much the opposite of most contractors I've dealt with, and having had so many things redone after they made dumb or bad decisions because they hadn't thought to ask ahead of time, I was very impressed and appreciative of Ray's attention and thoughtfulness.)
Since I had gone ahead and had the furniture moved, they started right in, taped everything up and got to work on the floors. Just our luck that the weather had to be triple digits that week, but they were not deterred. Both Ray and his helper (very nice man, awesome hard worker, but I'm unsure about the spelling of his name) really worked their tails off - I never even saw them eat. When I came back after the first afternoon to see what the floor looked like, I couldn't believe it - Wow! Even without anything on it, it looked gorgeous. It had been so dingy that Ray and both of the other guys had said they weren't sure if it was red or white oak. Turns out it was white, and Ray had gone out to get extra strips of white oak because he'd guessed and brought red, and didn't want the strips he replaced to stand out. Completely ignorant about floors, I couldn't see much difference between the red and white oak strips, but the next day, when the sun shone directly on the floor, I realized he was absolutely right. Although it was a subtle difference, it was noticeable in bright light, and I was very pleased he'd taken the time to get the perfect replacement strips. He had also managed to replace a strip that, because of an old threshold it tucked under, didn't look like it could be reached unless the entire front door threshold was replaced, so I told him to just leave it as it was, but now it looked like new.
They worked very long and hard and hot days, and every time I had a question, Ray took the time to answer, and both of them were completely trustworthy and unfailingly pleasant and nice to have around. At the end of each day, Ray had to fix the plastic sheeting so that my husband and I could walk through two of the doors, and I never had to remind him to do anything, as he just took care of things. Also, whenever I asked a question regarding the timing of anything, Rays answer was always dead on. This was so uncanny, that I finally mentioned it to him, and he laughed and said he should have the time estimation down, since he's been doing this work since he was in his teens. I guess that may explain his expert craftsmanship and ability to anticipate so much that he's extremely efficient as well.
The end result is that my floors are now so pretty, they look like they belong in a much nicer house, which is perfect, since we're continuing our remodel. In spite of the amount of dust generated, his plastic-taping magic worked and the rest of my house is not covered with oak dust.
I can't recommend Ray highly enough. He is friendly and good natured, but wastes no time, and is serious about his work. He's extremely honest, completely trustworthy, and his work ethic is unimpeachable. Having spent the last ten years having work done on two homes, I wish there were more contractors like Ray - maybe we should clone him. I'm sure most people here who've also rated him "A" would probably agree. I have to admit I was a little skeptical about all the rave reviews. I've found that there are many contractors who will do good work at high end jobs, hoping for similar referrals, but who don't feel the need to bring their best effort to the less glamorous neighborhoods. Happily for me, Ray is not like that. He's up front about what he needs to get the job done, and then he just does it the way it should be done. ( I'm so much happier to spend the little bit extra to have a job done properly, without having to nitpick, cajole, threaten, plead, etc., only to end up with inferior work anyway.)
He hadn't asked for a penny before starting the job, and to top off everything, after writing him a check, I attempted to give him a little extra in cash, and he wouldn't take it, but very graciously explained he felt he'd given me a fair price and if I was happy with the job, he was happy as well. I can't say that's ever happened before! Yeah, I know, skeptics, you think I overpaid for the job, but if you saw the before and after, you'd be impressed, and I couldn't be happier. My apologies for not having pictures to display.
The bottom line is, we've all spent hours reading reviews, wondering what percentage of them can be believed, if any. I am such a detail oriented person whose been so disappointed in many contractors, many of them perfectly nice people, who just aren't the sharpest tacks in the toolbox, possibly, and I was so favorably impressed with Ray, I told him I'd be happy for him to give my number to people if they wanted to call me for a reference. I haven't done that in years. Seriously, if you need your floors done or redone, and you want them done properly, stop reading, and just call Ray. Do it soon - word gets around, and he's going to stay busy.
