We live in San Francisco in an historic Victorian and needed a custom redwood swinging gate w/ a locking latch for our backdoor porch so that we had a way to let our dog go out on the porch but not run down into the backyard. It was a simple enough concept but one of those things that is really hard to execute b/c it's not a huge job and yet it requires a custom design, purchasing of redwood and materials, building and then installing the gate. 
I cannot give high enough accolades and thanks to the outstanding and extremely talented Mark Welschmeyer.  I was referred to him through another Angie's List service provider who was too busy with large jobs to help us. Mark, a master carpenter himself, was incredibly professional and communicative from the moment I sent him an email. He replied quickly, sent me a written estimate, and with the exchange of a few digital pics and measurements via email, he proposed buying and bringing the materials, creating a design on-site, and building/installing the gate, all in a day's work. 
We set a date and although it ended up being one of the rare days of threatened rain, he came into the city and did an absolutely phenomenal, top-rate job. He was incredibly thoughtful about the design - making sure there was enough space for our cat to comfortably meander through the gate while still preventing the dog from following. Not only was the design aesthetically pleasing, Mark was thoughtful about the angle of opening, the swing, the support for the post -- you name it. I felt so lucky to have had this talented craftsman out to my home and to benefit from the gifts of his well-honed craft. And the best part of the story is that his charge was beyond reasonable -- he could have charged more but this is a provider with good judgement, who is fair and does the right thing. He was meticulous and exact, stopped only when it was perfect, and cleaned up so that you'd NEVER know he had been there. 
One of my very best experiences on Angie's List -- I would have never found Mark otherwise, and I'm so grateful I did. The gate has now been in place for over three months and is absolutely perfect. Looks like it belongs and was part of the original design. While it's a "small" job in the overall scheme of things, it was an important need for us and I felt like I had one of the VERY best carpenters in the Bay Area devoted to making it happen.  Thank you so much, Mark!! When it's time to do some serious woodwork/renovations, I'll be calling you first, and giving your info to everyone I know! A+++++

Mark came by to bid the job, and emailed us an estimate.  We agreed on the bid & he started about a week later.  He came every day and worked until the job was done.  There were some difficult fixes that Mark was very creative in solving.  He purchased all the materials needed and did the tasks in the order that we asked.  We were very pleased with his work and would recommend  highly him.
