Our goal is to provide top quality, "Big City" medical services, with friendly, "Small Town" customer service. We view our clients as our neighbors, and we try to treat them that way. We offer diagnosis and treatment in all areas of medicine including dermatology, internal medicine, surgery, dentistry, nutrition, geriatric care and well pet service, including vaccines and spay/neuter surgery. We are experts in flea control and offer the best and safest products. We can also help you with any behavioral problems you may be experiencing with your pet. Medically, our focus is on preventative medicine and client education. Our role is to assist you in maintaining your pets good health throughout all the stages of their life . We practice traditional, science based medicine, but do refer to, and work with, alternative practitioners when appropriate. History Established in 1979 The Animal Medical Clinic was founded in 1979, located in the newly constructed Shepard Place Shops, in Carpinteria. The business had several owners in the 1980's before being purchased by Dr. Smith in 1981. Since that time, Dr. Smith has worked hard to improve and upgrade the facilities and services of the Animal Medical Clinic so that he can now provide the best medical and dental care possible. Dr. Smith has 20 years of clinical experience and is the only doctor at our practice. You will always be assured of seeing the same veterinarian at each visit, who will know both you and your pet. In addition, Dr. Smith makes himself available for after hours emergency consultations and can even make house calls when the situation warrants it. Meet the Business Owner: Scott S. Dr. Smith was born in the Bay Area, but moved to Germany when he was ten and lived there until he graduated from Mannheim American H.S. in 1976. He came to Southern California to attend Pomona College, in Claremont, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Music. After a change in plans, Dr. Smith attended UCSB for his pre-veterinary course work and fell in love with the Central Coast. After graduating from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, he moved to Carpinteria with his young family in 1989. Although well versed in all aspects of small animal medicine, his special interest is in surgery, with a growing interest in dentistry. His hobbies include skiing, Scuba diving, backpacking and, of course, music. Dr. Smith is a past President of the Santa.Barbara/Ventura Veterinary Medical Assoc. and current President of Band Forever, a booster group for music in our local schools.

I've been taking my dogs to Animal Medical clinic for about 10 years. It is a small and friendly place. Dr. Smith is very low key and relaxed. He will describe, but doesn't push hard for expensive treatments. The only thing I don't care for is the stainless steel table used in the exam room. The dogs get nervous when placed on it. I was recently at a vet in another state with my brother and his dog. That place had no exam table. The doctor got down onto the ground to work with the pet. That seemed to make the animal very comfortable. Next time in, I will ask Dr. Smith about that practice.

I have had a great experience Animal Medical Clinic and was specifically fond of Dr. Smith. I have driven a distance to go see him, as I think he is worth it. Also, Dr. Smith has been very honest, in which he didn't want to waste my money about having my cat receive ineffective shots at the hospital and instead instruct me about how to administer the shots. I thought his billing was great, as they actually saved me money.
