Repeat Customer - This is my situation. I had used Tom yancey company years ago to repair my Shake roof they did a great job, arrived on time, and reasonably priced. Fast forward I called them again this time to repair metal flashings on Monday and spoke to Marlo. Marlo took my $475 up front and told me it will be 4-6 weeks out for repair - I said okay. The same day Marlo leaves me a voice message they have a technician available to come by the next day Tuesday. I wait for them the whole day nobody shows up I call Marlo back because of NO SHOW. I keep calling Marlo everyday and was told that I am in the queve NO technician showed up for the rest of the week. I took 5 days off from work to wait for them. This is unacceptable to me especially for a REPEAT CUSTOMER.

"Thank you for your past business, it sounds like we were able to facilitate what you needed in the past; however, this go around didn’t meet your expectations. I’m glad that we get a chance to explain this scenario to you and all of the people reading this review. The main difference is the timeline in which you contacted us. You, along with several others, called after we received a deluge of rain, almost 0.50” in the Sacramento area. Even with the influx of customers, each with their own emergent issues, we were able to get you on the first round of service (within 48-36 hours of initial call with corresponding deposit). However, as you mentioned, you were frustrated that we did not arrive one day after your call and deposit. I’m not sure that we, or any other roofing contractor, could have done so in that timeline. With rainy season upon us, we recommend calling as soon as you think you might need service rather than waiting until it’s too late. Thank you for your past business and we wish you luck in your future roofing endeavors."

Would give ZERO stars if it were an option. The Tom Yancey Company (TYC) destroyed our house between tear-off of our old roof and install of the new one. Subcontractors they hired, which in their contract they made a point to state was something they never and wouldn’t do, inexplicably showed up an entire week ahead of the scheduled tear-off date and completely removed our roof. At that point TYC, caught off guard and not prepared to put the new roof on, decided it wouldn’t be a problem to leave our house with no roof (not even a tarp) until the scheduled install date 7 days later. 5 days into those 7 it poured rain. Extensive water damage throughout our entire house resulted in all of our possessions in storage and our family living in a hotel for 3 months until our house was repaired/returned to a livable condition. TYC denied any and all responsibility for the nearly $250K in damages but after a prolonged legal back & forth the arbitrator ultimately stated in her ruling that The Tom Yancey Company was in fact “negligent and failed to mitigate”. In TYC’s reply to a previous posting of this review the owner claimed our statements are “misleading and not factual”, and “for the real story call us at…”. In his reply the owner did not deny that TYC destroyed our home due to negligence and failure to mitigate. He didn’t, and couldn’t, because the ‘facts’ are that his company did exactly that, exactly as described above, and exactly as they’re very clearly written in 1) the arbitrator’s ruling, 2) his/his own employees’ sworn depositions, as well as 3) his own personal text messages to us. We would be more than happy to share copies of these documents and messages with anyone who asks. There is where you’ll get ‘the real story’.

I contacted six companies to bid the roof, gutters and guards. All the bids I received, except one, were about the same price.
Tom, the owner, came out to bid the job and talked extensively with my husband about what we wanted/needed. He was the only one to check inside the house to see if the roof around our skylight was leaking (it was). After reading reviews on multiple sites, checking the contractor's license board and BBB websites, we decided to hire Tom Yancey Co.
I am very happy with the new roof. Plus, the gutters look great and the guards are a better quality product than the ones shown to me by other roofers and at the same price.
I was very impressed with the workers who put on the new roof. They were friendly, courteous and always willing to answer my questions about the job. I have two dogs who stay outside when we're not at home and the workers did a great job of making sure to keep the gates closed.
My only criticism is that the foreman missed an appointment to meet at my house to discuss the dry rot repair. Otherwise, he was easy to get a hold of via call or text and he did keep me informed of the goings-on.
Next up on our house is new windows and front door and I'll be sure to get a bid from Tom.

I was extremely pleased with the work. The company rep was professional and very responsive to questions. Work was started and completed in a timely manner. They were willing to add some related projects that other contractors wouldn't like installing an awning and removing an old attic fan. Their price was competitive with others.

The project went very smoothly. Tom Yancey Company employees showed up when they said they would, performed very high quality work, and kept the place clean while they were working. When they were done the cleaned up very well. The new roof looks great and we have had no problems with it so far. The employees were courteous and professional. The price was very competitive. I very much liked the fact that Tom Yancey Company is fully insured with liability insurance and worker's compensation insurance. Also, they have a storefront office I can go to any time. Their roofing crews are actual employees of the company, not outside contractors. All in all this is a very well run outfit.

The work crew arrived as scheduled and went to work immediately removing our existing roof.
They were punctual, professional, non-invasive and did a beautiful job.
The work area and surrounding areas were kept clean, and they were responsive to any
questions or requests.
Additional repairs were made with no fuss at a reasonable fee.
We were kept informed of the daily status, and all permits were filed for us.
They have a hard working, considerate crew; and we are extremely pleased with the entire process,
and love the results.
We have already referred them to neighbors and friends.

He hired another company to do the tear off and left me to clean up the mess. They did not take down the antennae and it fell during the night and went through the roof. I had to cancel the contract and pay an enormous fee to do so. There so so much more, but I will have to write a detailed letter. It was HORRIBLE.

"Only a good company would have allowed [members name] to cancel her contract “midstream” and refund her money for her personal reasons. Turns out a neighbor and friend could do the job for less. [Members name] antenna was 49 years old rusted and decayed an freak, unexpected wind storm finely blew it down before we had sufficient crews to take it down. Our customers receive a 2 million General Liability policy with each purchase. Fortunately no one was injured and no damage occurred. Our employees did a good job removing her roof with our equipment leaving her home cleaner than when we arrived. My father, my mentor, used to say…”You can’t make all the people happy all the time…but I will always keep trying”…With a history spanning three centuries and 126 years I am the latest of four generations to have maintained the Yancey legacy. The patio cover and spa gazebo that Tom Yancey Company designed has transformed our back yard so that we can now make use of it all year round. Tom and his entire staff are great to work with. We will definitely refer them to anyone looking to have a patio cover built.

The work was done well, on time and with professionalism. The workers were well organized, worked hard and very pleasant. They answered any and all questions I had. When the work was completed Tom Yancey came to review the work to verify completion.

They are excellent. They have been in Sacramento since 1946. They are the best company in town. The roof has a lifetime guarantee. They are very polite and will treat you like a human being. They are nice people. They are perfectionists and do beautiful work

It was quite good. They did such a good job on the roof, that is why used them on the windows. They were very quick at getting back with me and I never had any trouble getting in touch with them. Their prices were very competitive. They got the windows and sliding glass door installed in about 2 days

The end result was alright but we had some problems getting there. The workers did not follow the instructions as for putting the shingles on. We asked them and they said this is the way we always do it. We had an inspector come out and he told them to do it the right way. The job took a little longer than normally because they had to redo some of the roof. We hired him because of the reputation of his father who used to do roofing as well.

We'll Tom explained very product that I could pick from to reroof my home. He explained how the install would processed . What he did not tell me,but I was given a call by his office manager that that some one would be at my home on a sunday to reinstall my A/C unit this was above and beyond the call it was a hot day and the installers also came twice that day. This was the smoothest reroof ,attic insulation and seamless gutter job. Yes most of the time I was at work ,but the workmen kept the job site clean and in order and everything Tom Yancey told me was the way it went and they stayed in contact whit me throughout the job.

He is NOT trustworthy and not regarded highly among his own peers.
He has lied to me blatantly and installed damaged gutters from day one.
Their work has been causing water penetration since the time of installation.
We have been struggling since then to understand where the water was coming from.
At first we thought it was the windows or siding and were ready to plow 20k into our house.
We since have learned it is Tom Yancey's poor workmanship of the roof, gutters, and a vent that are the culprit. He has seen these areas and offered a "fix" but is it even close to what needs to be done to repair the areas.

"<<<>>> This roof and gutter project was done in 2008 in Woodland. We did not hear from the customer for 5 years. We responded to her complaints of 3/22/13 re: “ minor drainage problems with wall to roof and gutter gable ends”. ASAP. After Tom Yancey and a qualified technician walked the roof it was found to be good condition without leaks. The customer admitted at this time in front of 3 witnesses that the roof did not leak The inside of the house was observed and photographed and shown to have old stains that were documented before the new roof was put on in 2008 by photos on file. The customer admitted to pre-existing stains on ceiling and walls. The gutters most likely from the after market extensions to the down spouts and debris were weighted down and not preforming as they should in two areas considering the large funnel type valleys on this house that merge to the gutter. Tom Yancey Company had plans to spend as long as it took to work on her areas of concern. She cancelled that morning after we were fully mobilized. We have made every attempt to satisfy this customer. Her aged 70 plus year house has leaking siding and windows .That by the way in 2013 she asked us for an estimate to replace. We did not give her an estimate. TOM YANCEY COMPANY HAS BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR 25 YEARS AT OUR ADDRESS IN CARMICHAEL BECAUSE OF REPEAT CUSTOMERS OUR HIGH STANDARD OF WORKMANSHIP AND OUR ATTENTION TO DETAIL. Our house is a small 1000 sq.ft. with an attached garage and a single gable roof. Pretty simple roof job. I contacted four companies and three sent representatives to take measurements and provide a bid (Zimmermann never showed up). The Yancey name is certainly well-known to long-time Sacramento residents like us, and Tom Yancey came out and provided the estimate.
Estimators for the other companies climbed up on the roof and scratched their heads and guessed (and differed) about how many existing layers there might be, or what might be under the existing composition. Tom was the only one with the sense to ask me to open the garage so he could look up and see from the inside. That and his bid was slightly lower than all the rest made the sale. All bids were within 15% of each other.
We're looking to sell the house, so we told everyone to keep their estimates low since we'd most likely go with the lowest bid. I probably would have selected Yancey all the same.
The job was anticipated to take two days; it took two and a half with the clean-up crew having to return on a Monday since we were having a garage sale and couldn't have them on a Saturday. The workers were all polite and attentive to concerns or questions -- seemed to be hard workers all.
Yancey missed clarifying to us about new county smoke detector and CO detector requirements for the interior that all contractors are supposed to go over with customers, which the county inspector mentioned. Not a big deal, the inspector still signed off and said the roof looked great. I signed that I would install detectors where required in addition to the one I already had.
Yancey provided a written warranty transferable for free for 120 days. That should help when I list the house. I questioned the number of hours claimed for one portion of the job; Tom took off the cost for one hour in good faith.

From start to finish the experience was good. I knew that it would be for Tom performed the previous roof installation. The Tom Yancey Company has been in business in this area since 1939.
During the installation all concerns that I had were fixed in real time. There was no objection from Tom. He wants to make certain that the customer is satisfied. Tom is one of the most honest businessmen that I have dealt with. I fully recommend him to install your next roof. You will not be sorry.

Tom came out to do the estimate and a few days later the estimate was submitted to me in a detailed and very understandable manner. I secured other estimates and Tom was competitive with those but his professionalism and local ties to the community won me over. The job started with the removal crew arriving promptly in the AM and had the old roof removed in a matter of hours. Tom's installation crew arrived that same day and the total job was completed in less than three days.
I even got a compliment from my air conditioner/heater service company (my unit is on the roof) that Tom went above and beyond in the work around the unit.
