Oil and filter were changed at a fair price (the Subaru gets synthetic oil), comparable to what I've paid elsewhere.
While he was unable to find a definitive explanation for the bad tire--suggesting that the problem was in the tire, not the car's alignment (which was recently checked when we replaced the tires)--he did confirm that the strut on the affected wheel was in good shape.
He reported that the pads still have significant material left and he explicitly recommended not replacing them yet. It would have been very easy for him to sell me brake service, simply based on the number of miles on the car. His honesty and thoroughness guarantee that we'll go back and will likely take our Prius to him for its next service need as well.

The whole experience of switching to a different mechanic couldn't have went better. Ben the owner was very pleasant to work with he was very conservative about what repairs needed to be done and he trimmed a lot of labor off the bill. It did take a couple extra days to find the differential but that is totally understandable given the part needed for the old truck. Also the part he ended up finding was cheaper than the original one by a couple hundred dollars so I was more than happy to wait a little longer. The truck was driving pretty bad when I brought it in, and when I picked it up it ran flawlessly. We have had it back for a couple weeks now and the truck is running great even after some off roading.
