My husband did all of the demoing of our bathroom and Jamie provided some of the tools needed. Even helped my husband in installing the toilet and window trim. I have to say that Mr. Hughes is truly a Jewel! When we start our next project, we will be calling Mr. Hughes.
JC Tile was not the fastest or the cheapest contractor out there, but I am so very happy that I went with them. It's worth it to know that the job was done right. The result is absolutely stunning, and people are constantly complimenting me on his work. Thank you for saving my patio, JC Tile!
We called Jamie after having to fire our original contractor off the job. After pulling up the carpet on our 1970's family room addition floor, we discovered it had two large humps and several cracks running the length of the concrete. It was like the concrete floor had been poured over two boulders and the house had settled around them. It was so bad, we thought we might not be able to install tile and have to go back to carpet. Our original guy (not on Angie's List) told us he could just tile over the concrete without doing anything to fix the cracks or unevenness. Well, even as laypersons, my husband and I could figure out the floor would look terrible and the tile would eventually crack.
I called Jamie, he responded immediately, and after I told him the situation I was in, he came over that very evening and examined the floor. He explained it would have to be leveled and the cracks sealed and how he would go about doing it. I was very impressed by his honesty and professionalism. He took his time and explained everything in detail. My husband and I felt right away that he was the right man for the job.
Part of the job involved using a commercial concrete grinder in order to get the humps down. I was dreading the mess I knew that would create but, Jamie and his brother Jason sealed the room so well and used water while doing the grinding so that not a bit of dust entered any other part of our home. He also poured a leveling compound to get the floor even and then sealed the entire floor so that there was much less chance of the cracks affecting the tile at a later time. Jamie then set the tiles and used special devices that kept the large tiles even while the thinset was drying.
The work these two guys did was beautiful AND I did not have to do one speck of clean-up after them. That was a first in my experience of using any contractors. In fact, after the job was completed, Jamie asked us if we wanted to save the left-over cut pieces or did we want him to dispose of them. Since I have various hobbies that involve using tile, I told him I wanted to keep them. Jamie is such a perfectionist that he (and I just loved this about him) stood all of the pieces on end, leaning against the wall, sized smallest to largest. Who does that kind of wonderful stuff anymore? Most people would just throw them in a box or leave them lying in a pile. Not Jamie! It was just such a nice touch and says more about Jamie than I can ever tell you.
I noticed someone just gave him an F for not returning his phone call. I have to say that every time I called Jamie, he either answered his phone right then or called me back in a very reasonable amount of time. In fact, that was one of the things that so impressed me about him and I think if you read his other reviews here you will see that he and his brother are nothing short of top notch. Jamie and Jason are the kind of guys that you are actually excited to tell your friends about. ANY future tile work I need to have done, Jamie will be the one I call.
All in all, the job went extremely well and we are very happy with the result. Jamie and Jason took great care to keep the construction area as clean as possible during the remodel, which is not an easy task. In the end, our house looks lovely thanks to Jamie's gorgeous tile work. This was not a quick job, but it was worth the wait. Our cabinets actually delayed some of Jamie's work. I would highly recommend Jamie for his excellent tile work. He is dependable, honest and has an eye for perfection.
It was a long project (approximately 5 weeks). I was impressed with Jamie from the first time we met. He has a consultative approach to the project - he discussed tile features for me to consider, grout choices, and gave recommendations for some good tile distributors to check out.
From the very start he worked with me to discuss tile layout, grout choices, expansion joint options (and layout) and strategy for the project. As we remained in our home during the project, he took extra steps to ensure that the project was as and quot;livableand quot; as possible - putting up plastic shielding walls to separate our living areas from the construction zone, cleaning up the house and driveway thoroughly at the end of every day, making sure we had access to our kitchen and front door regardless of the stage of the project. In fact, we really only had about two days throughout the whole project when we didn't have access to our kitchen. Jamie and his assistant (brother) Jason were professional, patient, and very easy to work with.
The proposal/bid included everything but the tile (grout, hardiebacker, other materials), so it made the total cost of the project a lot more clear from the start so I would know exactly what to expect to pay for the entire project - no guesswork. I only had to think about two costs - JC Tiles labor and included materials, and the tile cost itself. Once I selected the tile choice, Jamie took care of ordering it for me and gave me the online invoice number for me to make the payment.
The end result is absolutely beautiful. Jamie is a perfectionist. The tile spacing and grout was done flawlessly and he works very hard to end up with as little scrap as possible, efficiently using all the tile he possibly can somewhere. The expansion joints (recommended to prevent buckling or cracking with such a large tile project) are almost invisible where they had to be placed in larger areas, and are non-intrusive in the doorways.
During the project he would consult us to make sure he was building the shower to our expectation. The tile we picked was very challenging to work with. He's very knowledgable about all types of tile and would share ideas on the different ways we could lay/use the tile. One of the main reasons we picked Jamie is because he uses the Membrane System in the shower instead of the hot mopping process (to make it water resistant). He's been using this product for years and did a terrific job of installing it. He also recommended urathane grout, something we've never heard of. He explained the benefits of the product and we decided to use it. Using the membrane and special grout cost more upfront, but we believe it's worth it in the long run. Jamie also install a new tile floor with heat underneath it. He worked with the electrician to make sure the floor had it's own circuit and that the wires would go where they were suppose to. He recorded all the tests results so we would have them for the company if needed. We have a small bathroom in the hallway that needed a little updating. Jamie replaced the flooring in there as well. Jamie was alway prompt and never missed a day of work. He was flexible with his schedule and willing to work with us when changes happened. We're thrilled with the end result and would certainly use Jamie again.
"We were hired to tile the upstairs master bathroom and hall bath floors 150 sq. ft. approx. Gini was really pleased with our work and loved the tile so much she decided to tile the downstairs kitchen, family room, laundry, entry, and downstairs bathroom floors an additional 550 sq. ft. approx. We tiled all the cabinet toe kicks through out. We also tiled the laundry rm. with tile base as a compliment to the job at no additional charge. Everything was grouted using a top of the line Urethane grout that never has to be sealed and stays semi flexible in the joint and is color fast. The $5600 was for labor and misc. materials for all the floors upstairs and downstairs which took 2 weeks to complete including demolition and re-installation. Great customer and really enjoyed working for you! Thank you! -Jamie and Armando"
"Our original bid was for $6,770.00. With the changes for the repairs to the floor and the electrical our bill came to $9,682.00. The rest of the cost were in the misc plumbing and electrical and tile purchases. The members were the best of customers and we really enjoyed working for them. Kudos to the chef!!!! You are awesome ! Thanks for all the great lunches! It was great getting to know you . We are family! ;-) -Jamie"
