We have worked with Bill on two other projects and like that he allows us to participate in the process, from buying or finding our own windows, doors, paint, etc. to installing insulation. He is also aware of our budgetary restraints and tries to offer solutions to keep costs down. Sometimes it's a detriment because we don't hear all of our options but for the most part if we ask enough questions we get what we need and can afford. We like to reuse and recycle and love that he's willing to work with things we've salvaged as long as it's safe and to code. Bill was helpful with advice as to when to hire someone or when to do things ourselves. He arranged all sub-contractors including painters, electrician and roofer. This unit is intended as a welding / artist workshop but designed and built so we can convert it to living quarters down the road. Getting the plans drawn up and through the permit process was excruciatingly slow due to his plan guy leaving town without completing the necessary changes. Finally Bill drew up the plans himself and his guys started digging so when the permit came through they were ready to start. Building included a 4' block retaining wall, tongue-and-groove plywood floor, standard framing, exterior siding, drywall, slanted roof, outdoor deck and stairway, four windows and two doorways. We built our own sliding barn doors and he helped us get the measurements right and double-checked our installation plans. The building is super sturdy, well insulated, well lit and ridiculously cute. We also needed a subpanel installed and electricity brought from the main house. His electrician was very helpful and knowledgeable and suggested things we hadn't considered to make expansion or modifications easier in the future. Pros: Excellent workmanship Works with many high-quality sub-contractors Listens to concerns and is patient with questions Assists with creative solutions Reasonable pricing Was considerate with our schedule and the fact we both work at home Cleaned up the entire space after each work day Cons: Some days no one showed up to work and we rarely knew when to expect workers The last two weeks of the job were really slow Job took 10 weeks after permit (quoted 6 weeks)
Description of Work: Built a 12'x20' accessory unit in our back yard.
