A few days after the job began, I was informed by them that I had mis-read the quote that they had given me. They had listed the wording "does not include replacement wood" which to me meant, the quote did not include the cost of the wood. Instead, they handed me an estimate for the additional cost of $8,800.00 at which point, I cancelled the work on the apartments ( which is what the replacement wood was for) and told them to adjust the original estimate to include just the main house. To my astonishment, they reduced the cost of the original $9,700.00 estimate by only $900.00. All the previous estimates I had gotten from painters put the cost of doing the house at around $7,500.00 and these guys were now charging me $8,900.00 for the work. However, since they had started the job I let them continue. What happened next just flabbergasted me. They put down a coat of the final paint without even showing me a swatch of color. I had told them I had wanted a white for the main color of the house similar to the white on the apartments, so they just chose a color and started painting without even asking me if that was the color I wanted. Then when I saw it and took objection to it since the color was actually a light yellow more than a white, they charged me $1,800.00 for the color change. Numerous other things went wrong as well, they broke a bedroom window, messed up my garage door opener, broke a few outside patio tiles and failed to remove some jacuzzi equipment that was scheduled for removal in the original quotation. Whatever you do, don't hire these guys.
Description of Work: Originally, I got an estimate for them to paint my house and to repair and paint the woodwork trim on the small apartment building behind our house on the same lot. This included sanding, old paint removal and new paint to the exterior and to the trim.

After the work was completed, we pointed out: A large area of drips in the middle of one of the dining room walls at about eye level, Bathroom trim was and still (over four months later) is very sticky and has peeled off in some areas. We have tried repeatedly to get these problems rectified only to receive excuse after excuse, the last of which was that Sherwin Williams ran out of paint.
Description of Work: I had several small rooms inside my house painted by Steve Goldstein's company PAINTING SERVICES UNLIMTED. Steven's price was more than twice that of other bids we received, but we thought we would be getting better quality work at this price; so we hired him.

Response from Painting Services Unlimited
In my 33 years as a Professional Painting Contractor, I never worked for people that were so impossible. In the period of time we were there (5 working days) she called me 51 times because she could not make up her mind regarding the color samples we put up at her request. We did not charge her for the time it took to put up the samples (8 hours) total. After agreeing to pay the cost of the samples at my cost, she reneged. After telling me she was so happy, she gave me a final check. She called me the next day, and told me we forgot to varnish the kitchen side door. We were not Contracted to paint or varnish in the kitchen. I told her it would be an extra charge because it wasn't included in the Proposal, she said I should have known that that door always stays open into the dining room. I told her we would come back and take care of the separation of the ultra deep base red on the dining room wall and inspect the bathroom. They told me I had to come back on a Saturday because they had to be with their three legged cat. I ask if they could put the cat in their office/guest house, they were afraid to leave the cat. Mind you, the cat was in the house the whole time we were painting and varnishing the rooms (4) When I came there, I think it was a Thursday, I looked under their deck were they stored paint, for the wall color, there was none. I went to my Paint Store (Sherwin Williams) and they did not have the Ultra Deep Base paint in flat and they would special order it (1 Qt). I called her right away and explained, she was furious with me, she said. "You mean Sherwin Williams doesn't have any flat paint in the whole store"! I replied, they have flat paint, they just don't have the Ultra Deep Base to tint to! She hung up on me! As far as the peeling paint in the bathroom, There is one 2 inch area of wood built up on the cabinet that surrounds the bathroom sink. It's a very problematic area that's subject to a lot of moisture and nicks. I told her I would sand and re coat that piece of wood. I have the qt. of paint I special ordered and picked up that following Monday morning, it's in my Foreman's Van, on the shelf, it's marked with her name. As far as my price is concerned, she hired me because she called several of my References on a sheet I provided to her. many of these client on the sheet have been using, Painting Services Unlimited for 15-18 years. Except for this report, our references are impeccable! 4 man working + myself advising them on color, working Five (days+) and the cost of the Custom Deep Base paints. My cost of the paint and Varnish to complete the project $600.00. There is no way, another Professional Painting Contractor could have put in the time necessary to complete the project for $1,750.00. They hired me because they knew it couldn't possibly be done for half the price and I work with Designers & Decorators all the time, and I'm good with color! I would be happy to forward a list of satisfied clients to Angie's List. I also will go back and finish those spots, but I would have to request that they remove their post.
