I did not see much of the owner supervising the work--he came to do the assessment and to collect the chek.
I did get into a disagreement with the owner when I felt the stair nose was not matching with the stair. He got a little annoyed with my assessment and work went forward after little explanation. Eventually, the floor looks awesome.
Also, in the beginning, when I visited the showroom and was choosing the type of floor I wanted, I decided for Johnson flooring-Brazilian walnut. He did show us multiple options --he was highly recommending some other company . I stuck to my choice and he has to order the lumbar for us.
I have to say prompt service, came for free quote he same day --although I live about 35 miles away from the store. the work was started as soon as the wood arrived from the company. Overall--job well done.
So we initially were referred to this store by a contractor we were using. We had just bought our home and decided to do most of the floors over in engineered wood.
Selection and negotiation was no problem, as I indicated above, price was actually OK compared to some others.
The initial installation took place in May of 2012. The downstairs went relatively smoothly; that was fairly straightforward, a hallway and three bedrooms.
The issues came with the upstairs, where additional work was being performed. They were using an adhesive to attach to the plywood subfloor that was getting pushed up between the cracks. We spoke on multiple occasions about the need to keep things cleaned/covered as other work was still going on.
On the day when the bulk of the work went in upstairs, I went over about 8pm. Adhesive pushed up between cracks, partially cleaned, and nothing covered. I had to go to Home Depot, buy paper rolls, and cover the whole thing myself...was there until probably close to midnight. When I spoke with John the next day, he asked his foreman who denied my having asked for the floors to be covered, and also said "we don't usually do that." That would have been fine, except I had explained before starting that work was ongoing and we would need that service.
The job went in. We had to have them come out again to use a solvent to clean the glue off. Installation quality (gaps, etc.) was fine, but they were messy with the glue.
As we started to use the upstairs, we noticed that the upstairs floor was turning problematic. Dropping anything on one of theplanks left a dent or scratch. We started contacting John at IDN in November, telling him the floors were denting very easily. (We're talking about dropping a butter knife from the counter leaving a bad ding.) He came out to the house, took pictures, and agreed the floor needed to be fixed.
After that, it was a runaround. He told us he could no longer get the floor. He referred me to the supplier, a one man shop, who also denied any problems with the material. After 3 months, he finally 'found' a box of the material on ebay, bought it, and in February we they finally came out to replace 4 or 5 boards. They brought the box, and started to cut up the damaged boards.
What a mistake. They said "it may be a little dusty" before they began, then proceeded to skilsaw into the boards right in the kitchen without covering anything. We had to yell "no, stop!" and put up some protective plastic where we could. Too late, though, and not enough. For the first day, he had sent out one of his more junior people. He was cutting/scraping the boards up, then when he started to replace them, we saw that the boards were not the same color. When he laid it down, it also had an almost 1/8" gap. At that point, we said, "No, that's enough." and sent him home.
We called John again and asked about the mismatched color. He told us that was the best he could do. At this point, though, we were between a rock and a hard place. We told him that we at least wanted someone who knew what they were doing to come out. The next day, he sent out one of his senior guys, who finished the job as best as could be done.
So we now have 4-5 boards that don't match the rest of our $8,000 floor. By the time they were done, we just wanted them out of the house. We have a 30-year warranty but would not let them in the front door.
My overall take: IDN is happy to come out, quote, install a basic floor. They do not want to work clean, cover up the floors if other contractors are working, put up plastic, or come out for repairs. Nor do they admit any problems with deficient material, even when they see it with their own eyes. They will take their sweet time to resolve an issue...as I said, it was almost 3 months to get the "repair" done.
Like I said earlier. RUN. AWAY.
