AVOID THIS COMPANY. My basic problems with this company were the misrepresentation of services offered and unprofessional behavior. I have a 60 year old house and I wanted to get the carpets removed and the existing hardwood floors stained and refinished. I was especially interested in getting the floors stained to match some of the existing doors in the house. I went over this requirement with each floor company that came out for an estimate. Joan Slaughterbeck, the owner of Slaughterbeck Floors, came out to my house for the job estimate. At this time Joan asked me what sort of stain I wanted. I pointed to an existing door in the hallway and said asked if her company could match the stain on the door. She said “No problem. We can match this stain.” I asked her if she was really sure if her company could match the stain color. The color is somewhat between Honey Maple and Teak. I have tried myself to match the stain color in oil based stain and I know that it is not easy. Joan Slaughterbeck again told me that her company would have no problem in matching the stain. She said: “We have a professional stain matching service. My guys do this all the time. No problem.” On the basis of her verbal description of the services of her company I accepted her bid. I thought that since she was the owner of Slaughterbeck Floors and that they had been in business for over 30 years, that she should know the abilities of her company. The Slaughterbeck work crew came out to my house, removed the carpets and sanded the floors. On the next day the lead worker asked me what stain color I wanted. I told him that Joan had said he would match the stain on the door in the hallway. The worker looked at me like I was crazy, rolled his eyes, and shook his head NO. I again told him that Joan promised me that the refinishing job would include matching the stain on door. The lead worker just shook his head NO and said that he could NOT match the stain on the door. I then asked to see a stain chart for the brand of stain that they were supposed to be applying, DuraStain. The worker told me: “A stain chart? Those don't exist”. Well this is total crap. Stain charts for DuraStain exist and the other flooring companies that I received bids from all had stain charts. At that time the worker told me that he could offer me only 3 choices for a stain: clear, golden oak, and cherry. He had absolutely NO stain matching ability. Frankly, this is a total misrepresentation of services during the bid and estimate phase. If Joan Slaughterbeck had been honest with me and told me that her company could not match the stain color that I wanted, I would have moved on to a different company. At least the other companies who submitted bids all had basic stain charts. You should not have to pay several thousand dollars in upfront costs and move all the furniture out of your home, only to find that the flooring company has lied to you about their total lack of stain matching ability. Getting the right stain color was very important to me when hiring a company for this job. Which is why I asked about it during the bid and estimate process. A customer cannot make an informed choice about hiring a company if that company misrepresents their abilities. In the end I was forced to choose one of Slaughterbeck's limited stain choices. I was not given any other options at that point. There were other problems with this job. When the carpets were removed and the original hardwood floors exposed, several boards had either water or termite damage. I agreed to pay an extra fee to have all the damaged boards replaced. But after the first coat of polyurethane was applied I found a board that still had a large hole in it. This board was among the group of damaged boards that were supposed to have been replaced. The workers were quite happy to stain the board with the large hole in it and put polyurethane over it, as if everything was OK. It took an email to Joan Slaughterbeck to get the damaged board replaced. This is NOT a professional hardwood floor refinishing service. I was at my home everyday if the workers need to talk to me about existing problems. They didn't do that. If you are getting your hardwood floors refinished you should definitely AVOID THIS COMPANY. There are other professional floor refinishing companies in the local area. I am extremely sorry that I hired this company. I would never hire them again for any sort of floor service.
Response from Slaughterbeck Floors Inc
"We responded to this review when it was first posted, but that was somehow removed. This is a long review, but in general, it seems like the only major issue was the color of the hardwood floor stain selected and whether or not it perfectly matched the color of the stain of the doors in the home. So, right off the bat - I don't know what this "professional stain matching service" is that we were quoted as having; we definitely did not make this claim. In addition, there can't be a guarantee that the floor stain will exactly and perfectly match the doors. We absolutely will do our best to match it as close as is possible (and I do guarantee our best is the best one can provide). But there are SO many factors that go into the surface's final appearance: - Wood species - UV damage or other wear & tear of the doors over the years - Lighting effects on floors & doors - Color of paint on the walls & furniture in the same vicinity reflecting onto the surfaces Our mechanics make stain samples on your actual hardwood so that all the aforementioned environmental factors can be seen with a larger area of color. That's why they don't have stain charts. Of course, the homeowner's approval is required before the stain is selected, which was also provided in this project. I wish we had received a phone call during this stain matching process so one of our office managers (or myself) could have addressed the concern at the time - just like we addressed and fixed the concern with the damaged floorboards mentioned near the end of the review. Sometimes, things aren't perfect right off the bat. That happens! But we take great pride in our work and will make sure to correct any issues our customers may have or educate them on what the potential issue could be. Well, it went just ok...haha just kidding this company is AMAZING!! From the start Joan the owner made us feel like valued clients, and I have to say the team of Dominic and Daniel were nothing short of outstanding. Their attention to detail, their deep knowledge and competence, all of it delighted us. At one point they spent two hours shaving down a point in the subfloor that was in their estimation 1/4 inch higher than it should be. In a subfloor! They even came back and sealed the baseboards with caulking. I would recommend Slaughterbeck without hesitation to anyone who values craftmanship, quality, and attention to detail.

Here where I live, you would think you would get good quality work, but you don't. They redid my floors about 3 years ago, and my floors have never been the same since. Pieces of wood are separating from each other, you can see black in between there and food falls down in there. They were supposed to take care of the problems that Lipp didn't and straighten it out, sand it down and  make it level, but they didn't do that. I called them to complain about it and they said they would take care of it but they didn't. I finally said screw it and I don't want them in my house anyway.

They are too expensive for what I got. They also put some marbolium in a small area and I couldn't close my door. He complained and complained and begrudgingly fixed the door. And then they left without putting the strip back on the bottom of my door. I called them and he said Oh yeah I saw that in the back of my truck. He came back out and put it on.

I will never use them again.

"Hi [Member Name Removed], We're quite surprised to see this review 2+ years after the jobs were completed, especially after receiving a positive feedback evaluation form from you! Here's a scan of that feedback form showing all 10 out of 10 ratings. This is typically anonymous, but you just happened to put your name on the back of it as your return address! [Removed Hyperlink] Please understand that we're just writing to defend ourselves against the claims you made. From what we recall, the project and experience with the 2 jobs we did for you were actually very positive. It's important to understand that your hardwood floors are 5/16" floors. These are different from more modern, thicker 3/4" wood floors. The number refers to the thickness of the wood planks. 5/16" floors have flat sides and the wood planks do not "connect" with each other. This makes them more vulnerable to subfloor/foundation movement. 3/4" floors have a tongue and groove that "click" the planks together, eliminating the gaps between planks. Since 5/16" floor planks do not "connect" with each other, they are much more susceptible to natural wood expansion/contraction, along with the movements of the ground (especially here in the Bay Area). This means your 5/16" floors WILL lead to these gaps you mention over time (say, 3 years - just about how long ago it was when we refinished and fixed these floors). We also didn't INSTALL these 5/16" floors. We just REFINISHED them. Excessive movement would mean a structural issue below the floors - an issue for a general contractor! -- Regarding the Marmoleum in your kitchen, it was so long ago that I can't address the begrudging attitude. Sorry about that. However, it seems like the other minor issues were fixed and there were no other issues. Sometimes, things aren't perfect right off the bat. That happens! But we take great pride in our work and will make sure to correct any issues our customers may have or educate them on what the potential issue could be. That same pride and quality is reflected in our pricing. For any questions about this reply, please contact: Joan Slaughterbeck Owner, Slaughterbeck Floors, Inc. 408-379-5813"

The hardwood floor refinishing was stellar. The floor looks great. Initially, we thought the two bedrooms had hardwood underneath carpet, but later discovered that the floors were actually laminate. Joan did an excellent job of keeping my original (and very short) timeline over the holidays, and keeping expenses low. The new floor installation the team did was excellent. Every time I look at it, I love it; visitors are genuinely surprised to learn that it's vinyl, not hardwood. Slaughterbeck Floors has an excellent selection of flooring and expertise.

Wow! Awesome. From start to finish. To begin with, they have a really great showroom. They have a lot of samples of different brands, styles and types of flooring. Their staff is helpful and knowledgeable. I never felt pressured or given a line like, "The sale is only this weekend" or told they were going to throw in something at a discount because I was so cool or because they were so cool. You could tell that they took pride in their company and the reputation of their business. It also seemed like the employees at the office really enjoyed working together.

After placing my order, there was a manufacturer delay in the delivery of my flooring. This delayed the install date by two days. They kept me up to date regarding this and called me when the flooring arrived.

The gentleman who installed my floor was fantastic. My floor couldn't look any better. Real attention to detail. This was also evident in how he was teaching his son who was with him while he was installing my floor. In the four days at my house I don't recall his son ever actually installing a piece of my flooring. However, while at my house they talked extensively about how to install the flooring, how to address the installation issues that arose during installation and the why behind them.

I also have to give props to his son. I was very impressed by his attitude, eagerness and willingness to learn. It is a long day to go back and forth to fetch tools while you watch someone else install floor. He seemed to ask very appropriate and knowledgeable questions.

After completing the job there was only 1.5 boxes of material left. That is impressive. Many flooring companies will sell you more floor than you need which can significantly increase the price of the job. They did such a great job measuring in the beginning and didn't charge me for more floor than I needed that now I have the perfect amount of leftover material in case I damage a piece or I do some additional remodeling.

Estimate was 4 days to do the complete job - took 2 weeks. A crew came out to remove the original floor but then one guy did the installation by himself. Had to have someone home with him the full 2 weeks. Did a good job though, putting tiles on the diagonal. People keep complimenting us on this.

The job involved removal of a very old, leaky toilet, repair of damaged plywood under it, removal of old coved-base linoleum and installation of a vinyl plank flooring with baseboards. The entire job was done in 2 consecutive days. All the removed flooring and toilet were taken away. The workers did a careful job of measuring and cutting and cleaning up. I was warned in advance that there might be dust cleanup and paint touch up that I?d need to do afterward, but they vacuumed away all dust and didn?t mar the walls at all, so no touch up was needed. The office staff and everyone else I interacted with were very polite, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

Outstanding from estimate to completion.  Good recommendations on how to do the job, were willing to move heavy furniture and art work since we couldn't relocate, and accommodated schedule changes when I had to go into the hospital.  Workmanship was very good, and the workers cooperated with my wife who needed some access to the house, even though they were doing the entire first floor.

It was great. They were very truthful when we had people out talking about doing the flooring, we mentioned we had a dog and they said there is no wood flooring that's going to withstand a dog. So far, actually, it's doing better than we thought it would. We love the refinish, it was really great.

Slaughterbeck came out to install engineered hardwood on a concrete slab. The job was expected to be completed within 4 days. After removing the carpet it was decided the concrete slab needed to be leveled before installing hardwood. I was well aware of the possibility when Joan came out to do an estimate. The job took longer than expected and it was well worth it. The floors are absolutely beautiful and I could not be more happy!! I had a stellar team of guys (Dominic, Daniel, Tony, Eddie) working on my floors!! Not only was I happy with the end result, I was impressed with the entire process. They were professional, considerate, hardworking, and they took pride in their work. Dominic and Daniel know their craft and were most helpful in answering all my questions and providing honest feedback.

We moved all the furniture from the house into the garage, and then went on vacation for two weeks. Slaughterbeck Floors came in and  refinished the floors while we were gone. When we returned, the house was clean and the floors were beautiful. We were able to move the furniture back into the house immediately.

Joan Slaughterbeck was very helpful in suggesting all the materials, but I chose the colors of tile & carpeting.  She was knowledgeable of the type of bamboo flooring I wanted, however she slightly under-estimated the amount my floor needed.  So, I had to wait for another week to have the bamboo floor totally completed.  She did expedite it by having more flooring picked up in Tracy, CA.  However, I waited a week to have the floor completed.  Tony did a great job installing both bamboo & vinyl floors & the man that did the stair carpeting did a beautiful job.

They installed really attractive primed base boards & if I could have afforded it, I would have paid to have semi-gloss applied.  I did the work & found it very time consuming & difficult, but it looks nice.

I had used Slaughterbeck Floors two times before on the installation of oak hardwood floors in my kitchen, dining & then living room.  They had done such great work ten to fifteen years ago, I decided to call them back this July & I'm glad I did.

When we moved in, the floor was badly scratched and creaked all over. Slaughterbeck recommended that, although the floor appeared to be of good quality, it was wavy and creaked so much it was not worth salvaging. They were right! It turned out the former owners had put the floor in and instead of leveling the concrete (which cost me an extra $250 but I was happy to do it), they used the cardboard from the shipping boxes to level the floors!
When they were done, they discovered that the floor was1/8" lower than the former floor so we had to have a handyman come in to paint around it and reset the baseboards. But they had warned us this might happen and credited us for what they would have charged for the baseboard reset.
Our floor looks sooo much better! It's flat and you can just tell it was a professional job! The area was left clean and neat and they delivered exactly what they promised when they promised.
I would use them again and recommend them to anyone who wants a quality job at a reasonable price

They were able to match the floor which was amazing because the contractor who put it in didn't even know what the floor was (well, they screwed up the invoice so no one could tell based on that). They were quick and you could not tell that a repair had been done!

They were excellent. The installer was able to level our cement slab. He put the flooring in at a diagonal direction.  We love the product and the installation.  When a different contractor marred the floor Slaughterbeck came and fixed it on their way to another job.
