Although the roof appeared to be in good condition, I decided to have it replaced as it was over 30 years old. In late September of 2018, I met with Shadowfax roofing estimator John. John was very knowledgeable and understood the issues with the high pitch of the roof. He provided two quotes. The first quote was for the basic Owens Corning Tru Definition shingles ($9,980) and the second was for Duration Premium shingles ($10,580). I opted for the higher quality shingles. Since the gutters were going to be replaced, I requested the wood that extended beyond the roofline be cut in order for the gutters to extend to the end. John explained it would not be a problem, however, any dry rot would need to be removed and replaced with new wood. Additionally, I had requested a vent be added for the bathroom as it was venting into attic instead of through the roof. John also indicated everything could be completed in about 3-4 days. However, it would be about three months before the job wold get done. Since there was no hurry, I agreed. In early November, I received a call from their scheduler, Pam stating the job would start on November 13th. I explained I would be leaving town on November 16th. She stated the job would be pretty much finished by then. Unfortunately, there were some delays. On the first day, the workers did not show up until late in the afternoon to remove the roof. On the second day, work stopped to due to the dry rot issue. Although, I had explained to the foreman on the first day of what I had wanted done specifically, replace any rot and cut all the overhangs, work stopped until I gave the okay to do the repairs. Fortunately, the dry rot was minimal, however, it caused a delay as there was only one person doing the job and he had left for the day. The foreman explained the previous job had some issues, which required their attention. On Friday, the crew for the gutters arrived early in the morning, however, they couldn't do the gutters as the overhangs still needed to be cut. So, crew returned later in the afternoon. Since I was unable to be present when the job was completed, my family supervised. I was informed the work was not completed until Sunday. When I returned home, I noticed the vent I had requested be added was not done. I contacted Pam and she stated it would get done. A few days later it rained. I have had no problems with the roof. Although there was a lack of communication in the beginning and delays, the job was done well. I would hire them again. However, I have learned my lesson that roof replacements should be done in spring or summer.

We're very happy with the complete experience. Jesus contacted us right away and replied quickly to any texts or phone messages. Scheduling happened quickly for both the estimate and the repairs. His quote was the lowest but close to some of the other companies we contacted. The work looks great. Jesus was very easy to work with.

Jesus and his men did an excellent job with everything they did - removing the old roofs, clean up and replacement with new materials. They were very courteous and respectful of the property, garage and home. We cannot say enough about the punctuality and wonderful work everyone at Shadowfax Roofing does. Their pricing is great too!

I will go ahead with the recommendation provided by Shadowfax and will hire them in due time frame.

Pricing of roof: I had four pricing quotes and they came to be the second lowest. However the delta between the highest, and the lowest was not much in any case. Thus I could go with any one of the four. Pricing of the solar: I had a several quotes including Solar City, and they were in the lowest pack (compared $/kw of the system with all the incentives). Roof Work: The quality of the work is superb. They did exactly what they promised on the quote. Solar work: Solar panels on the roof looks nice; Even though I have a relatively large system due to the pond operation, the panels are arranged well and all the wiring is hidden inside either under the panel or the roof attic through conduit. Clean up: They cleaned all the mess around the house after the work is done, which makes my wife (and in turn myself) happy. Shadowfax gave me an additional discount for doing the roof and the solar together. This is good because it helps me not only the finance side but also dealing with any potential defects once the work is done. I did not deal with two different installers for any roof related issues. The roof is tested well during this winter as we had an unusual heavy rainy season. No leak is found up to now, and the new gutters route the water the way supposed to be. The solar production is too early to say (we need at least one year to see), however, it looks like producing as promised. In the month of March, the production is slightly less than the yearly average (total system capacity/12).

For coming, I thought he was prompt and courteous. He did give me a quote. He didn't really do any work. I guess the quote was in the ballpark.

I needed a complete new roof on my house and contacted four roofing contractors to get bids.  When I first contacted Shadowfax, their estimator, John, came out to my house the next day, made complete measurements of my roof and then sat down with me and explained in detail what choices were available and what he would recommend for my house. After this discussion I asked for a quote for a complete new roof along with new fascia boards on the eaves, new roof vents, and new gutters and downspouts.  John also mentioned that if I was interested in installing a solar power system that they could do the complete project (roof and solar) at the same time and would guarantee the material and installation of both the roof and solar installation.  Because I was already thinking about getting solar power, I asked John to also prepare a quote for the solar system.
Two days later John returned to my house with Dylan, Shadowfax's solar specialist, and the two of them presented a complete and very detailed proposal and quote for the roofing and solar system.  I told them that I would review it and get back to them in a few days.  Compared to other quotes that I received from other roofing companies, the Shadowfax quote was very competitive in price (but not the absolute cheapest), but also included a couple of items in their base price that other contractor's quoted as an extra cost option, such as long-term warranty on materials and workmanship and premium roof vents.  
After deciding to hire Shadowfax, we had another meeting with John, Dylan and Jerry.  Jerry is the owner of Shadowfax and he reviewed the complete proposal and quote before signing and made a couple of suggestions for the project that I agreed to.  Jerry was very easy to deal with and wanted to make sure everything was done exactly as I wanted.  I decided to have the roof done along with the solar power system.  I was impressed that Shadowfax does all of the work (roof and solar) in a single contract and that they are responsible for both the roof and solar work so there is no finger pointing and arguments between contractors over who is responsible for what when it comes to the roof and solar work.  
Jerry personally supervised the roof work and the solar installation.  Because the work was done at the same time, there was no re-work required to install the solar system on the roof.  Details like electrical wiring penetrations through the roof and installing mounting points for the solar panels were done while the new roof was being installed.
The entire project (roof and solar) took about two weeks, plus an additional two weeks for the special inspections and approvals from the San Jose city electrical inspection department and from the electric utility (PG&E) for the solar system.  All work was done to my complete satisfaction including a couple of unexpected roof repairs that were handled very competently and professionally.  During the project, if I ever had a question or comment, Jerry was right there (or would call me within a few hours) to answer my questions.  Also each day the Shadowfax crew would clean up all debris leaving my house and property tidy and clean -- they even cleaned my garage and landscaping when the job was done. 
The project was completed about 2 months ago and there have been no problems, no call-backs, or no re-work required since completion  The roof, facia boards, gutters and solar system look great and works well.  The new vents suggested by Shadowfax have made my attic and garage noticeably cooler, and the solar system performs very well -- producing the amount of electrical energy approximately as predicted in their proposal.  The installation of the solar panels on the roof was done with great care to maximize performance yet minimize any unsightly appearance of the panels and associated solar components on the roof.  The solar panels blend in very well with the roof and are not the eyesore typical of many solar systems.  
Overall I am very satisfied with Shadowfax and working with Jerry was great -- one of the best experiences I have had working with a contractor.  Jerry really likes to make sure his customer is satisfied.  Based on my experience getting a new roof and solar system, I highly recommend Shadowfax for re-roofing and/or solar power installation.  Working with Shadowfax was a pleasant and satisfying experience.

It went pretty well, although it turned out that I needed to keep an eye on things because they made a few mistakes. My previous roof was improperly installed, so a lot of the existing wood around the roof perimeter had dry rot. Shadowfax was to replace the wood on an "as needed" basis. A couple of times, they started installing new materials on wood that was rotten and I had to point it out to them. In some cases, they were reluctant to replace wood that looked sketchy to me (not sure why they wouldn't just replace the wood since I was paying for it). I unhappily allowed them to leave some pieces of wood that looked water damaged. They also started to install the wrong color downspouts and had to go back to get the correct color.

For the most part, the job went well and the roof is very good. My only complaint is that I don't think my concerns about replacing the water damaged wood were always taken seriously. In hindsight, I should have specified that all of the wood be replaced around the roof perimeter and should not have allowed the wood replacement to be optional.

Installed the fan.  Didn't do the roof inspection. I had to call them to
have them perform it. Also: I had a bad rodent problem in the attic,
which I didn't know about, but which would have been obvious to the guy
installing, but he made no mention of it. I found out later on when I
went into the attic to see the fan.  The fan works fine, and the work
was done well.

Overall, I was entirely impressed. They suggested taking some things off the roof that would make the appearance of the roof more attractive because it was an older home built in ‘47 and they were no longer needed. They did a fine job with the work itself. I did have to call them back and they were great about it, because they pride themselves on talking how they cleaned up after each time, but when they left, I have a single car garage and there was a lot of debris that had fallen when they opened up the roof. Before they started they said they were going to cover things up that were in the garage and they forgot to do that but when they came back, they were very; very thorough about me showing them what I needed them to do. They did it very, very well, but I did have to bring it to their attention. It was somewhere between $9000 and $10000 for the roof and gutters. Even though they didn’t clean up as expected, they were very respectful about coming back and taking care of the matter and doing whatever it took. The price was fair because I had about five different quotes and they all came within the ballpark. They were highly professional. I would recommend them.
