Howard, his son Leslie, and the other guys were great to work with. They stuck by their quote and were very good on jumping on things when material was available and when important dates (i.e. appliance deliveries, move-in day, etc.) were imminent. I would definitely hire them again or recommend them to friends who are having work done.

Our side garage door was replaced by one of his technicians - Gary - who did the work and did an excellent job.  We provided the door, which we purchased from one of the big hardware stores, and Gary installed it.  The installation was, as far as I am concerned, perfect, which I knew it would be, as we had previous work done by Howard.  Gary spent time installing the door just right.  The price was somewhat higher than the store would have charged, but I wanted it done right, and I knew it would be, from previous experience with Howard's crew.  Their overall  workmanship is excellent.

From day one until now-5 years later, Howard and his sons and other contracted  workers were top notch, pleasant to work with. To this day when we call him with a problem, he sends his son over who fixes it( a door that would not close) and then never sends us a bill.I highly recommend Howard and his workers for outstanding workmanship, in spite of a very busy business. There were some lean years but business is booming again.

I have had lots of work done on the various houses I have owned, but nothing can compare
to a kitchen remodel. I had waited years to remodel my kitchen. When the time
was right, I interviewed contractors?only those who came with a strong
recommendations. Howard had done work in my house, but the projects were small.
Although they were handled well, a kitchen is a beast of a project.

I met with Howard, explained what I wanted, and how I wanted to handle the purchase of
items for the kitchen. I wanted to purchase appliances, cabinets, lighting,
faucet, and cabinet hardware myself. Howard was fine working that way with me.
He also gave me the best bid.

I dislike having people working in my house, but Howard and his crew were great. They
were all professional and respectful. One of the things I like best about the
crew was that they asked me questions. From what areas of the kitchen did I
want to be able to turn on the overhead lights? What about the task lights?
Things like that ensured that the kitchen was what I wanted?not what they
thought was best.

I live in a home that was built in 1941 and has been added onto multiple times. There were
lots of problems behind the walls. Howard and his team dealt with the problems.
I wanted the cooktop moved from one side of the kitchen to the other. There was
an issue with the venting. Howard and his team thought out a solution that got
me what I wanted and looked good.

When I was out of town, there was a problem with countertop. The supplier had provided the
wrong quartz. Howard had figured what happen and got resolution quickly.

There was also a problem caused by a previous contractor who worked on my house. Even
though it was not part of the kitchen, Howard made sure the problem was fixed.
Yes, it was more work, which was must have been good from Howard?s perspective,
but it was a safety problem. I was very glad to get the problem resolved.

Finally, Howard or one of his crew was at my home during all of the inspections.

My kitchen is beautiful and functional. I enjoy my kitchen every time I step into it.

Work took about 6 weeks to complete.  We had some ideas of what we wanted, but Howard helped us decide what would be the better solution.  Howard was very flexible and gave us some good resources to check out tiles and faucets for our redesign.  He kept us fully abreast of everything that was happening and in what order things would be done.  The crew who Howard brought in were very polite and they all did a great job.  They worked around our schedule so that we always had a working bathroom to take showers etc so we were not left without a place to use whilst Howard and team worked on the other bathrooms.
I would certainly use Howard again and would recommend him to family and friends.

.Howard provided us with a bid in October 2012, but we wanted to start construction on February 7, 2013. Howard started the remodeling and construction exactly on that date, and contiued without an interruption until the job was complete in approximately 6 weeks, just as he estimated. We made several minor changes, and needed some extra work done in the garage.
His final price was just as he estimated, even though he did some extra work. His crew is outstanding, very courteous. He is simply the best contractor we ever worked with.

My friend at work spoke very highly of Howard Lamcke.  Howard made a great first impression when he came over to our house to discuss the renovation late on a Friday afternoon before a 3-day weekend.  That in it of itself spoke volumes about Howard and his work ethic.  Howard came across as very knowledgeable and straightforward.  In fact, Howard and his team have a lot of experience working on a wide range of projects from bathroom and kitchen renovations to building a house from the ground up.  Howard was one of many contractors we met, but he was the most candid and detail oriented contractor we met.  Howard?s bid came in at the middle of the pack, but my husband and I decided to go with Howard because he was very easy to talk to and he seemed like a very honest guy.  Howard proved us right.  He exceeded our expectations, and we are very pleased with our decision to hire Howard and his team.  They were on time and on budget.  They were very efficient, professional and most importantly, very responsive to our needs.  Howard?s sub-contractors (tilers, stone countertop, dry wall mud and taping, painters, heating and ventilation contractors) were also great and reliable.
Howard executed our vision with a strong attention to detail.  We even asked Howard to construct a custom mirror frame for one bathroom from the leftover molding from the cabinets and it turned out fantastic.   There were no surprises.  Howard would inform us of any additional cost for any incremental work we asked him to do.  Howard communicated well on the next phase of the project so we knew what came next or if we needed to pre-purchase any materials.  The open lines of communication and regular updates put us at ease throughout the process.  Overall, we would hire Howard for our next remodeling project. We trust him and he is our go-to guy.

After 25 years we finally decided to remodel our two and a half baths and contacted Angie's List to obtain a list of contractors.  We decided to obtain the services of Howard Lamcke as he definitely sounded like he knew what he was talking about, and his bid was reasonable and fair.  He did not try to talk us into doing work that was not needed, such as tearing the bathrooms down to the studs and rebuilding from there as others wanted to do.
During the project, Mr. Lamcke directed us to vendors who offered the best quality fixtures and merchandise for our budget.  We had our master bath remodeled and the shower completely replaced with cultured marble.  All three bathrooms received new vanities,  new cultured marble counter tops, floor tile in place of linoleum, new mirrors, lighting, and fixtures.
The project proceeded without any problems except for a couple of very minor plumbing leaks which were fixed immediately.  The workmen and subcontractors definitely knew what they were doing and the quality of work was excellent.  I am somewhat of a perfectionist and very picky about quality.  I was most definitely pleased at the quality work that was performed on our project.  In addition, all construction debris was hauled away daily and the property was swept clean.
Mr. Lamcke called us at the end of almost every work day and informed us what to expect the following day.  In other words, he kept us informed about the project - daily.  His crew were knowledgeable, fast, and exhibited excellent workmanship on all that was remodeled.  I wouldn't hesitate to hire Howard Lamcke and his crew for another project, which will probably be a kitchen remodel sometime in the future.

Howard came out to walk through the house and provide an estimate on the work I wanted done.  They were able to start the job within a week or so. Howard sent one person to focus on the electrical and one person to focus on the crown moulding.  William and Gary were both really easy to work with and a pleasure to have around.  They were flexible with changes, and did really nice work.  There were a lot of rounded corners to work with and the crown moulding looks great. They cleaned up at the end of each day, so it was easy to get back to normal after they left for the day.  The work took about 5.5 days total, including retexturing the walls and ceilings to prep for paint (two other people came to do this work).  They were prompt, communicative, and the quality of the work is great - very happy with the outcome.

"We do most of our work "in house" with our own employees. This helps us make the project go faster and monitor cleanliness and safety. Thanks for the work!"

If you don?t mind paying a lot and don?t care what your bathroom will look like, Howard is your guy.
Howard Lamcke seemed very professional and personable during the estimate process. His bid was the highest our of all bids I collected,  but I still went with him:  being a very busy person I figured he?d save me time amd effort managing sub- contractors and ensuring the work is done well? big mistake! Howard rarely shows up to check on the work, his subs have poor skills, leave lots of mess and don?t handle your property carefully. They also can raise the price stipulated in the contract and Howard just passes it on to you and lets you haggle with them. The vendors he uses are also far from being top-notch but do charge high prices.  Please see the photos I you want to know what your bathroom will look like once you have Howard?s workers install a vanity top and a side splash. In the process they destroyed my $800 custom-order brand new linen closet by cutting an uneven chunk and splintering the wood. I was not even told they were going to do this or given other options. I am baffled by all the positive reviews about this contractor and I?m extremely sorry I selected him to work on my bathroom. In the years to come, every time I am going to look at the ugliness he turned my carefully selected brand-new bathroom components into, I know I will think of what I huge mistake I made by not firing this person when the first issues with this work started to crop up.

Overall I'm pleased wit the shed.  It nicely accommodates everything I wanted to put in it, and could probably be packed with more.
There's really not much to tell in the way of construction; it's just a shed built on 5 leveled, prefab, concrete pylons.  The near-ground framing uses pressure treated wood.

These guys are the best!  We are extremely pleased with how smooth and painless the process was.  Howard initially provided us with "ballpark" estimates to gauge how much of a project we could afford.  His final quotes were in line with original estimates and our final billing was consistent with original estimates.  This group of guys are honest and trustworthy and a joy to be around.  Howard mostly uses his own crew, but the few subcontractors were also fabulous.  Everything was finely scheduled and the job progressed smoothly.  They have good taste and were very helpful recommending current trends and styles.  We just had our house appraised and the appraiser commented that it was the finest wood-millwork he has seen (crown, casings, trim, etc), as well as a very top quality remodel overall.  We were thrilled to see that the value of our appraisal reflected the money we spent.  Our family will miss them and can't wait until we can schedule to have our remaining bathrooms remodeled!

Our experience with Howard was and has been absolutely amazing from the get go.
Choosing HowardWe were looking for a GC after closing on a house less than 2 weeks after our son was born, so we needed someone who could really own the project from beginning to end, and give us the peace of mind we needed to focus on other things.  By the same token, we also had a fairly short timeline to get the bulk of the work done, as our lease was ending in less than 6 weeks, and we needed to be able to move in. While the timeline was challenging, Howard was able to work with us and set expectations about what was really achievable given the state of the house, and given his references and no-nonsense attitude, we felt very comfortable moving forward.
Work Before Move-inNot much to say except Howard and his team hit the ground running and never stopped.  Whenever we stopped by the house, be it during the day or at night, we remarked on how quickly things were moving.  And even though at times there were issues with third-party material suppliers, work never stopped on the house.  To that end, in the period prior to move-in, 85% of the work was completed, including 1 full bathroom (and part of the 2nd), full flooring redone, 95% of the doors / casings / baseboards, all of the electrical, along with random other projects that had come up.
Closing it OutSince we were in the house, it was a little more difficult to get the work done, and schedules had to be arranged a little more closely.  To that end, we would agree on time slots when his team had availability after materials came in, and after a couple of weeks, not only was the rest of the original work completed, but also other things that popped up in the house that we needed help with (e.g., replacing a kitchen faucet, repairing ducts, installing fixtures and exhaust fans, etc.).
Overall ReviewTo say that we were happy with Howard would be an understatement.  To him and his team's credit, they were able to work with and around us given the crazy situation we were in, and provide impeccable craftsmanship and care to the home we had just purchased.  On top of their overall professionalism, they were also genuinely nice, which is a must-have when essentially living in the same space for as long as this project took.  We would recommend him highly to anyone, and as we move forward with other projects in this house, we will not hesitate to keep Howard on speed dial.

If you?re looking for someone who will show up whenever it is convenient for him, almost never responds to phone or email and disappears, leaving a job half done for days/weeks at a time, Howard Lamcke is the contractor for you!
We were first told this would be a two-week job, when we got the written estimate it was listed as a three-week job. Almost six weeks after the job was eventually started, our bathroom remodel was complete.
Some days, we felt like prisoners in our own home - waiting for Howard to arrive and start working. Occasionally we?d get a phone call at 4:45pm telling us he would not be showing up that day.
Don?t expect an apology or anything even slightly resembling customer courtesy for not calling, showing up or not responding to your calls or emails, you?re not going to get one. Howard will just show up (eventually) and act as if nothing is wrong.
On the plus side, the workers he hires are very friendly and quite competent - if only he?d let you know when, and if, they were going to show up to work. The work done was good (especially the work done by the tile guys) - even if our job was one of several being juggled at the same time (and it showed).
During the bathroom remodel, a leak in a pipe Howard had just installed was pointed out to him by the inspector while the pipes were still exposed. Howard had taken so long to return to our job, he had forgotten about the leak and allowed it to be cemented in and tiled over. He was then forced to chip away at the newly installed tile and even had to cut a hole through the outside of the house to repair the leak inside the wall that should have been easily fixed weeks before when it was first pointed out.
* Just four months after the bathroom remodel was complete we noticed water damage inside the vanity. We contacted a professional plumber who had to reinstall the pipes under the vanity using all new parts. The plumber said the pipes had been installed wrong from the start and incorrect parts had been used. Also, there hadn?t been any putty or tape used to make the drain and pipes water-tight.
Howard?s corner-cutting, poor communication skills, poor customer service and difficulty in juggling multiple jobs will keep us from ever using Howard Lamcke again, nor would we recommend him to anyone.
Response from HOWARD LAMCKE
"I am puzzled by this report, as this is the first time I am hearing of any issues. The remodel turned out beautifully, and the price stayed as originally agreed despite my paying more to pick up tiles at 4 different Home Depots. After the hall bath was done you asked for and received an estimate to remodel your master bathroom. You then contracted with me to install your front entry door for $1,650. I picked the door up as a courtesy to save you a delivery charge and completed this project. I have not billed you for this work, and I certainly won't now. The plumbing under the sink was inspected and passed by the city of San Jose, and was installed the same as we have in over 50 projects in the last year. As a note to all my customers, it is important for us to guarantee and warrant our work, and we expect to be called first for any issues that may come up. This is our 30th year in business; we have served over 2,500 satisfied customers, and will continue to stand by our work for years to come. Having said all this, and while I vigorously dispute this report, I can not deny that this is what you feel you experienced, and for that I am truly sorry."

After 2 false starts to our job (our fault), we finally managed to have our much-needed remodeling done. The job started in August 2011 and was finished in early December 2011.

In the master bath:
  • New, tiled shower installed with frameless doors
  • New medicine cabinet
  • New granite countertop
  • New soaking tub with tile backsplash
  • New plumbing
  • Exhaust fan
  • Bath lighting
  • Tile flooring
New in the Powder Room:
  • Lighting
  • Exhaust fan
  • Granite countertop
  • Sinks and new toilet
  • All cabinets were refaced and had new doors installed.
The upstairs bathroom was gutted:
  • Vanity w/granite countertop
  • Lighting
  • Exhaust fan
  • Tile shower/bath with frameless doors
  • Medicine cabinet
  • Tile flooring
While these jobs were going on, we also asked for an estimate to reface all kitchen cabinetry and add new doors; replace tops and all doors of two hallway cabinets. Also had doors replaced on wet bar; converted it to a flat countertop and installed new mirror.

In the kitchen, Howard and his crew
  • Refaced all cabinetry
  • Replaced all doors with custom red birch doors
  • Replaced tile backsplash
  • Updated kitchen overhead lighting
  • Installed lights under cabinets
  • Installed custom drawer under smooth top range
In addition, in the dining room cabinet/wet bar:
  • Replaced tile with granite countertop and removed sink/faucets
  • Installed beveled mirror
  • Replaced all doors on cabinet and installed 3 new drawers
Large upstairs hall cabinet:
  • Replaced countertop with custom red birch top
  • Refaced/replaced all doors with custom
  • Installed 2 new louvered doors over air exchange

We had so much done, I'm sure I'm leaving out something:-/ Regardless, we're thrilled with all the changes and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend Howard for remodeling. He and his team are first-class.

I have nothing but praise for the work of Howard Lamcke. He has a staff of competent, qualified and ethical people as well as the companies with whom he works for the specialized portions, e.g., the granite installation and the painting. This was critical as I was not always available to see the day to day work, but we were always able to connect via phone or e-mail or notes and keep the project moving. Prior to linking with Howard Lamcke through Angie's List,  I had great difficulty finding someone who would be proactive and move ahead with the kitchen and bathroom remodeling project in an effective, efficient manner and keep the costs reasonable. I owe my son for taking the initiative to sign me up on Angie's List and doing the research of the companies listed for this remodeling.   Howard was so helpful as I wanted to open up the kitchen and he guided me in the process; he recommended a very helpful structural engineer to provide an evaluation and then took care of all the permits and inspections that needed to occur prior to and upon completion. He had an assigned foreman with whom I could regularly communicate on all details with Howard always involved as needed. They gave me excellent advice in all areas as this remodeling project was a complete new adventure for me.    Howard and staff were so patient as we had some difficulties with the company where I had purchased the cabinets; when I needed a recommendation for the glazing that needed to be done, he put me in communication with just the right person. He also went the extra mile as I was out of town and there was an issue with an alarm system from a prior owner that the condominium manager needed me to solve; Howard and his foreman were so gracious as the foreman made a special trip to my place to resolve the situation. In summary, Howard Lamcke and his company are extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of remodeling and I would highly recommend them to all.
