We'd talked with multiple firms, and we liked Gridley because they promised to work within our budget.  We met with the owner and a designer and described what we were looking to do and how much we were looking to spend.  The owner gave us a typical price range for projects like ours, and we were well within that range.  So we paid the $1,000 fee for a detailed design.
When we later met with the designer, she provided a cost range for our job depending on which materials and options we chose.  We were shocked to find that the low end of the range was nearly 50% over our budget.  Talk about bait and switch.  When we asked what had changed, she gave us some excuse about costs coming in higher.  She then said she could rework the estimate to be more in line with our budget, but that it wouldn't match "the dream".  Whose dream?
So that was $1,000 down the drain.  We went with someone else.

"I am deeply sorry to hear you were not satisfied with our Schematic Design and Conceptual Budget Phase. I totally agree with you, remodeling should be a satisfying experience from the first consultation through project completion, and beyond. I apologize that I let you down. One of the main challenges I have had over the years is matching the design and the budget parameters for our clients. It is not always an easy task and I have struggled to find the perfect solution. Here is how we do it now: We came up with our current process of the Schematic Design and Conceptual Budget Phase with an eye toward meeting all our clients’ needs including budget. If, after roughing out a schematic design, we determine that the cost of building that project is more than our client wants to invest, we offer suggestions to help bring the budget back into line. Solutions can be as simple as selecting different products or finishes or as all-encompassing as simplifying the design by re-addressing the primary goals for the project. We involve you in budget decisions with our goal of giving you the best value we can for the dollars you have available to spend. Our Interior Designer had two design appointments with your wife and one pricing meeting where you were both able to attend. It was unfortunate that you were not able to attend any of the design meetings, perhaps we could have gotten your concerns earlier. Sometimes we price out options that are not critical to the project. Without feedback it is hard to know what to pull back on. I am available and welcome any feedback or suggestions to make our way of doing business better. Again, I apologize that we fell short of your expectations and I wish you the best in your master suite remodel. If I can help in anyway please don't hesitate to contact me. The job was completed on time and they worked on our budget. Their system gives them a huge advantage over other contractors: they made us pick up all the materials and had everything in advance before they started with the project so they would be able to move to the job quickly and efficiently. When there was a minor problem with our shower nozzle, they came out the next day and fixed it. Once everything was done, it would nearly be impossible to get most contractors back for anything. They were just extremely impressive.

Gridley did an amazing design for our kitchen, but we could not agree to the terms for the final project budget.

As a result of a residential burglary, I needed significant repairs to my front door and based on my past projects with Gridley, they were my "go-to" team. I was able to schedule an assessment of the repair the day after the break-in and the team (John A and Greg H) were able to fully secure the damaged door until the actual replacement began a week later. I am appreciative that the repair aligned with time-off that I had scheduled over the holiday, and total project was completed two weeks after the initial incident. The door repair was completed in one day, with a separate day necessary for exterior stucco finishing.
Early this year, I completed a separate project with this team that involved repouring a concrete garage floor, the Rand R of existing cabinets and the installation of sink and counter cabinet in the garage. The overall experience and the results very satisfying and that directly contributed to my decision on the door repair.

Excellence during all phases of the job starting with initial consultation by owner Linda Gridley, through design (architect came up with many great ideas and re-worked the plan several times to meet my needs while staying within budget and solving issues such as city setback limitations, location of electrical panel, gas meter, etc. The design looked good on paper and in 3D computer simulations. It looks even better as it's being built and I can see how well the design flows throughout the house.
Project began precisely on time and is moving faster than originally planned due to the efficient and highly skilled workmen and adaptive real-time management by the project manager. The project is now 70% complete. The main thing that continues to impress me is the attention to details in all aspects of the job. I am a hands-on person and have crawled under the house and in the attic several times during progress of the work. All work is done cleanly and professionally. I've had other work done in the past on two different homes and the quality from Gridley Company is MUCH higher.
Work completed to date includes demolition of old family room and covered patio, removal of all old concrete, construct new foundation, then frame and build new family room. As part of the work, retro-fit two walls of existing house to strengthen it for earthquakes. Complete new furnace and ducting, insulation in all wall and ceiling areas that were opened. Copper plumbing, new drains for kitchen and laundry room as well as new master bath, almost entire house re-wired. Drywall texturing is now in progress while new kitchen cabinets are being made and stucco work on the outside.
When work is completed, design of new family room will blend in perfectly with original house so you won't even know it was remodeled! I'll update this review once the project is totally completed.

Linda Gridley first came to our home to see the kitchen we planned to remodel and to get to know us.
She recommended that we meet with one of the Gridley designers - Lisa, to let us meet her and determine whether or not we wanted to work with her.
Lisa like Linda was a very good listener. I was impressed with her ability to make the project all about what we wanted.
In 5 meetings which included homework for us, Lisa led us throught the design of our new kitchen.
We discussed our goals. Lisa completed 3 different designs for our space.
Of course, we picked something we liked from each plan and added a few ideas of our own.
Lisa planned both a space for our current refridgerator and the one we planned to buy.
The next week we did a virtual walk through the design and with a couple of tweaks had our plan.
Next we chose cabinets, granite and on Lisa's recommendation chose a granite windowsill.
We decided to use standard rather than custom cabinets to help stay on our budget.
I felt overwhelmed by the choice of the backsplash. I asked Lisa to select 3 options for me to choose among.
I'm still pleased by the marble option I selected.
Next came the pricing of the options we had choosen.
After we reviewed the proposal, we decided to move forward.
The install team started on time.
They worked steadily and carefully. They carefully sealed off the remodel area from the rest of the house.
Except for an extra week waiting for the gas company, the project ended on time and on budget.
I highly recommend Gridley Company for a kitchen remodel and plan to use them for my next project a bathroom remodel.

On time, Price was within my overall budget (only overruns were mine). I was most impressed that they worked hard each day, i knew who would be there and for how long. They left the worksite clean on a daily basis.
The cost is higher than others because of the business model. If you are looking for good quality and having a company with the infrastructure to manage and coordinate the work this is the place.

Gridely exemplifies excellent customer service, attention to detail, very creative design ideas and a thoroughly professional style of communication and construction management.

I chose Gridley after doing a lot of research and interviews. The owner, Linda Gridely spent several hours talking with me and her professional as well as her personality suited me perfectly. The designed Lisa created a wonderful kitchen lay out incorporating many ideas that I had not even thought of. The Project Coordinator Ron and Project Manager Roger kept in constant contact me during the entire remodel and were able to make some modifications due to some un expected circumstances. The entire remodel went extremely well and within the time frame originally determined. The end result was a kitchen I am extremely proud of and enjoy daily.
I also chose Gridley to repair and re-texture my living room design and create a custom fireplace mantle and tile surface. and I also call upon them for small works such as drain completely, plumbing and
door replacements. I trust them completely.

We moved out in September 2009 after the plans were submitted to the city. That process usually takes 2-3 weeks but the city took 2 months to approve the plans, mostly due to being short-staffed. Almost the entire house was gutted down to the studs and about 21 pillars were added under the house for stability. We encountered very few problems but when we did, full attention was given to addressing it as quickly as possible. Roger was our site manager and was a jewel to work with. No matter what, he was always calm and very knowledgeable. He always treated us with respect and no matter how many times we called him, he never appeared irritated or annoyed. Gridley has it's own electrician, Robin (who was very good and made many good suggestions for things we hadn't previously considered), a plumber, tile man and cabinet maker, David. David was such a perfectionist and skilled craftsman. He takes great pride in his work and it really shows. If something was off by 1/16th of an inch, he wasn't happy until it was right. We are proud to show off his work.

As far as the sub-contractors enlisted by Gridley, the only sub-contractor that we were not happy with was the painter. We felt that both the exterior and interior paint jobs were definitely not up to the Gridley standards. After the exterior was completed and we inspected it with the sub-contractor, we started on the front porch and the list of corrections and the "blue" tape was so extensive, that the sub-contractor finally said it was a lousy job and he must not have done a very good job of checking up on his workers and he would have them re-paint it. Even after the re-paint, there were still many problems that had to be fixed. On the interior, in the rooms that were strong colors, not neutrals, instead of putting a little paint on the walls and letting us look at it (which is what we thought was going to happen), he painted the entire interior. The guest room and the master bedroom colors were so different from the little paint samples we had looked at, we were shocked. The guest room was suppose to be a light lavender and it was almost purple and the master bedroom was suppose to be a soothing green and it turned out to be closer to neon green. Everyone that saw it couldn't believe we had chosen those colors. Even though he had only put on one coat and it still needed the second coat, he gave us an additional bill of about $1500 to repaint the two rooms, which didn't even include the ceiling or trim. Linda Gridley, the owner of The Gridley Company, being the consummate professional that she is, stepped in to handle the issue. We became aware a short time later that Gridley was no longer using that sub-contractor.

The workers were careful about doing as little damage as possible to landscaping, etc. and cleaned up after themselves on a regular basis. The communication with all members of the team was close to flawless.

We moved back in almost a year after moving out and are thoroughly enjoying the new space. A testament to the dedication of the entire team, there are only a few minor things we would do differently.

From our first encounter with the owner, Linda Gridley, to working with her team of dedicated, experienced, thoughtful and caring individuals, our decision to use this company never wavered. We have had individuals we don't know, come up and talk to us when we are outside and tell us they watched as the house was being worked on and comment that it turned out beautiful and that the second story we added looks like it was always there. One of our goals was that the addition of the second story not look like a "box" set on top of the original structure and it doesn't. We are so pleased with the finished product, that we have invited some of those individuals who stop by to compliment us on the remodel, to come in to see the inside, even though we don't know them. There have also been individuals who heard that we installed an elevator and have asked if they could see it and we invite them in, too.

We have had many individuals ask us who the contractor was and we do not hesitate to highly recommend this company.

Let me start by saying we are probably the worst kind of clients, cheap and always scrutinizing what is said and the work that has been done. This was also our first construction project so we were not aware of the process. We found Gridley Co. online. We really had no intention of hiring them until we met them. Linda is wonderful! She was very warm and sincere. We were extremely cautious about hiring just anyone because of all of the horror stories that we have heard about contractors. It took a while to get the plans drawn up and approved but we had plenty of time and we were aiming for summer time construction. It took a while to get used to the way they work. They work as a team. Each person is responsible for their area of expertise and they try very hard keep that structure. We started construction and demo went fairly quickly. Unfortunately the cost of lumber went up significantly by the time we started. Most companies would have adjusted their quote, but Gridley Co. stuck to their original quote. The rest of the project took a little longer than expected but we had several of obstacles that came up. Their employees are the best of the best. They are people that really want to do the right thing for their clients. Robyn, their electrician is incredible. (She NEVER cuts corners and is very quick) We always felt comfortable leaving them alone in our house. In the end, they gave my kids wonderful new bedrooms, a living room we can all be comfortable in, and a sense of knowing the job was done right. We have had countless compliments on the house. We plan on having a relationship with them for a long time if they can stand us.

Our experience with Gridley was very good. The work was done within the budget and was completed on time. The fit and finish of the cabinet installation was perfect. Their project manager kept us in the loop as things went along and was very responsive to any questions or feedback. Gridley was outstanding to deal with and I would (and have) recommend them to my friends.

Their work was satisfactory but not exceptional. Their plumber was inept. He installed the shower valve upside down which required a cut out in the wall of the adjacent bedroom to fix. Gridley had to come and fix the toilet seal after it leaked during a subsequent sewer failure.. We had to repaint that room ourselves. It took 4 tries to get the proper sink basin. We are not happy with the assist bar they installed by the bathtub. The job took longer than expected.

WE CHOSE THIS COMPANY AS THEY OFFER A PROJECT MANAGER ON-SITE SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH ANY OF THE CONTRACTORS! THEY ALSO OFFER IN-HOUSE DESIGN SERVICES AND HAVE A WONDERFUL SHOWROOM OF BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS IN DOWNTOWN CAMPBELL. THEY FINISHED THE PROJECT ON-TIME AND ON-BUDGET. OUR ONLY AREAS OF CONCERN WERE THEY SUB-CONTRACTED TO EXTERNAL PLUMBERS, TILERS AND PAINTERS AND WE HAD PROBLEMS WITH BOTH THOSE COMPANIES. HOWEVER THEY RESOLVED THESE ISSUES PROMPTLY.
