Hardware & Home Improvement Stores
Some of the worst service I have ever had. In addition, the individuals that worked there seemed to assume I was some dumb girl who didn't know what she was talking about. An hour prior to showing up I had called asking if they would be willing to rip some walnut planks into ~2.5 inch widths. I had given them all of the specs and the wood type. The person on the phone knew that the lumber didn't come from their company as the person specifically asked where I had purchased the lumber. We had discussed the price; I was given an hourly rate and told the job might take an hour but was cautioned that walnut is very hard wood and that this would take much longer to cut. This is another reason that I know the person who spoke with me knew that I didn't purchase the lumber at Economy lumber, as they do not sell Walnut. During the phone conversation I was told they were busy and couldn't get to right away, but to drop by the wood that day. All of this I agreed to.
When I showed up at the store the person at the counter stated they didn't do that kind of job. He also stated that I had to be mistaken because they do not cut lumber from other stores. I said I had spoken to someone on the phone, who had agreed to do this and gave him the details of the conversation He reiterated they didn't do that kind of work. Some one then rudely commented that I had probably called Southern Lumber. I showed them the phone number that I had called on my phone, which was the correct number. I gave them very explicit details about the conversation and they continued to claim that no one in their shop had agreed to do this. So, I asked if they were saying that I was lying or that I made a phone call to another company that wasn't logged on my phone and that I forgot about. Everyone tried to chalk it up to a misunderstanding, of course no one still admitted to talking to me, but any sort of explanation as to how it could have been a misunderstanding was not a possibility. For example, after claiming that the one person they had not spoken to would never have agreed to do the job because his MO is that they don't lumber from other companies, then presented the possibility that perhaps the person didn't know the thickness. Well I suppose it is one or the other. I went on to say that I explained to him how thick the wood was, and he suggested that perhaps he thought I meant that the width was 1 and 3/4 of an inch. Silly my, I thought 2 1/2 was larger than 1 3/4, so if I had called asking to have 1 3/4 inch wide planks cut into 2 1/2 inch widths I think the person must have been as stupid as they assume I am. After spending an hour carting lumber planks piece by piece from my second story condo to my car I was pretty p***** off at the wasted trip, time and effort. Not a single individual in the store, nor the vice president who was on site, offered to suggest any alternatives for me. I found this infuriating in that this wasn't just a matter of hopping into my car and showing up at their site. Moreover, the consensus some how seemed to be that I had misunderstood, even though every possible scenario that was thrown at me had been a detail of the phone conversation. If you want good service, if you want honest individuals, or if you are a woman and would prefer not to deal with a bunch sexist jerks, then don't shop here.,

They have been great. They were pretty competitive and they were closer to us. They were also very responsive and they have a good price. The quality of their wood is better than any other company.

When I described my needs to the clerk, he advised that plywood would de-laminate unless I very carefully made sure the sheet was completely sealed with paint. After discussing the problem, he said he had old doors that customers brought in to copy the hinge and door knob patterns and then left for Economy Lumber to haul of to the dump. It turns out the door is a much better solution then a sheet of plywood. And when I asked the price, he said I could have it for free since he had no use for it.
