The budgie is doing great -- I would give All Animals ten stars if I could.
About 3 years ago our Blue Front Amazon parrot developed a small but noticeable lump on his chest. We took him to a local vet who said she and quot;did birdsand quot;. She drew some fluid out of the lump and said it was just liquid. She did blood tests and sent the fluid to a lab. She told us the lab didn't turn up anything unusual and as long as it didn't seem to bother him it should be okay and probably would go away. About a year and 1/2 later the lump seemed to be growing. I asked my neighbor, a practicing vet, what she thought about it. She said pretty much the same except we could chance surgery but it might kill him. So we waited some more. Then it started to grow again and one day I noticed it was bleeding. That's when I went on Angie's list to find an Avian vet and I found Dr. Molnar. His reception made an appointment for the next morning as she didn't want him to wait.
Dr. Molnar examined him and said he thought it was a and quot;fatty tumorand quot; and should be a fairly straight forward surgery to remove it. He also said that since it was so large and bleeding it had to come off. I felt very comfortable that Happy was in good hands. Dr. Molnar was very gentle but firm with the bird and I had the feeling he really knew his stuff. I left my little buddy of 23 years with Dr. Molnar for surgery the next morning. I also had been given a high and low estimate of charges so I knew what to expect cost wise. Later that evening I received a call from Dr. Molnar telling me that Happy was doing fine and would be ready for surgery in the morning and that he was waiting for the results of one blood test. He also said it might be a bit more complicated as the lump seemed to have attached to the bird's crop.
The next morning I received another call from Dr. Molnar telling me that the lump had turned out to be crop cancer and he had sent a biopsy to the lab. Without going into too much detail I realized the bird was in trouble and might not recover. Dr. Molnar kept him in hospital over the weekend to watch him and make sure he was eating as Happy was very thin. He called me several times over the weekend to keep me informed and to ask about Happy's favorite foods so he could be tempted to eat. Monday Dr. Molnar called me and said I could take Happy home that evening. His communication with us was wonderful. When my husband and I drove down to pick him up we were greeted with a very joyous, and quot;Hi Happyand quot; from our bird. He looked great if a little bare chested. Dr. Molnar very patiently and carefully explained everything to us and showed me how to give him his medications. He not only took care of Happy but us too. We discussed follow up care and are now waiting for the results of the biopsy to determine the next step(s). All in all, I am so glad we found this wonderful doctor who very caringly and skillfully took care of Happy. I'm sure that whatever the test results are I know that Dr. Molnar will do everything reasonable he can to get our Happy back to health. Happy is now at home, eating like a champ and playing with his toys, chattering away. I'll keep you posted.
I have been a client of Dr. Molnar's for about five years. He has treated many of my nine parrots for a variety of iinjuries and llnesses, some basic, some exotic ,such as Aspergillosis (which Dr. M. Correctly diagnosed in my Pionus parrot right away). He has also treated my four dogs over the years for wounds from a dog fight, illnesses and congenital issues. In my experience, Dr. Molnar is skilled and knowledgeable, spends the time to explain what's going on, and never makes me feel he's rushed. The hospital is modern, airy and clean, the support staff couldn't be nicer. He's such a great vet that I continue to take my many animals to him, even though he's in Calabasas, which isn't remotely close to my home in West Los Angeles!
