The Eclipse Regulator clock is a family heirloom. It has been passed through the family since the early 1900s and was in nearly pristine condition until it was caught up in hurricane Sandy. I know this is California but the clock was in storage with a NY relative when the storm hit.
The clock was fully submerged for some time on the night of the storm then lay in the salty mess for days during the recovery. By the time we got to it all we could do was wipe it down and wrap it up for storage.
Several years later we finally got up the courage and money to unwrap the clock. The wood was nearly white in some places from water damage, the face was beyond repair, and every piece of metal was pitted or rusted, including the movement itself.
Clock Specialists initially advised me that the repair was likely as much as the value of the clock. When I explained that it was one of the last threads to a family that was mostly gone, he took it to heart. He, and his family, took loving care of the clock. With the exception of the face, which needed to be replaced, every piece of the clock was kept original.
The wood looks nearly new, the movement shines and runs like it is just from the factory, the hands are perfect, and the chime rings again. From lost and deserted in a dark closet it is once again going on our wall.
Clock specialists not only repaired an heirloom, they helped us keep a tie to the past. The work was fantastic.
