Michael T Electrical is superb. He work is excellent and he is affordable, honest, and efficient.
We bought a powerful window air conditioner (the specs say it can cool over 1500 square feet) and we needed a 220 volt outlet installed for it.
We first called an electrical company on Angie’s List that had coupons for a discount and had great ratings. (This part of my review is about that company, to show the differences in our experiences. I had looked up the cost of installing a 220 volt outlet and learned $700 was a normal price. With two Angie’s List coupons our price would be around $500, so I called and asked this company what their charge normally was for installing 220 wiring. I told the man I spoke with everything I thought might be relevant to the cost (for example, we had an electric oven so we knew the house already had some 220 wiring; the outlet was needed on the second floor in the back of the house; the house is old but the wiring was completely redone about 28 years ago, etc.) From the information I gave I was given an over the phone estimate of $700 before using the coupons (I would be permitted to purchase two coupons, bring my cost down, $80 per coupon, to $540). He pointed out that the price he gave me assumed our electrical panel had room for the new circuits and assumed that the wiring in our house was up to snuff. We were informed we would have to pay $59 for one of their electricians to come out and give us a firm price but that the $59 would be deducted from our final bill if we used them.
When this company came out (again, this part of my review is explaining our experience with a company that was NOT Michael T Electrical) the electrician confirmed that our panel had the room to install another 220 volt circuit and that the wiring in the panel and the house was in good shape. He then said he couldn’t put conduit along the back of our house and bring the wires to where they were needed because of some very technical stuff, so he had to do all sorts of things inside the house to get the wiring to that window, that it would take two men a full day, and the price would be $1,353, before the coupons, almost double the phone estimate. He also said we should really get an upgraded package, which would be $4,105, (before the Angie's List coupons) and this would be to "service the main and subpanel with a full restoration of all branch circuits" (though we asked again and were assured that the current panels, circuits, and wiring were in good shape.) The upgraded $4,105 package would include a lifetime warranty.
We told him we would get more estimates. He said we would get the same quotes from other electricians and that our ability to apply the $59 to the job would expire in two weeks. The unstated message was, of course, that we would pay to get additional estimates and then find ourselves with a greater overall cost.
I went back to Angie’s List and found Michael T Electrical. I did not tell him we had already gotten a quote and did not tell him I had looked up general prices on the internet. I bring this up only to say that he did not know he was competing against either internet info or previous quotes.
Michael said there was no charge to come to our house and he would be over in an hour. He quoted us $600, but recommended we send the air conditioner back and save ourselves a lot of money because the cold air from it would not flow around doorways into rooms, which is what we bought it to do. He said cold air would accumulate in the hall, which would get very cold, but would only trickle into rooms. He strongly recommended we return this gigantic air conditioner and get small room units that would plug into existing wall outlets, as that would be more efficient and cheaper for us. We wanted if possible to stay with our original plan because we did not want air conditioners sticking out of windows in the front of our house. We asked him if using fans to blow air into the rooms would move the cold air into them and he said it would help but still not be as effective or inexpensive as individual room air conditioners. If we did as he suggested he would not make a penny from us, but he told us because he believed it was our better option.
We decided to hire him and wanted the wiring installed as soon as possible. He was in the middle of a big hotel job and couldn’t come the next day but promised to get it done for us the day after that.
He came when he said he would, and he told me when he arrived that an electrical component the job needed turned out to cost him more than he expected it to, that the extra cost pushed the price up $58. He asked if I still wanted the job done.
I did. The outlet installation, including cleanup, was done in under three hours, not the full day the other electrician claimed it would take. Michael did such a beautiful job that the outlet looks like it has always been there. He handed me an invoice for $638 instead of $658. He said he’d taken $20 off because something went more smoothly than he’d expected.
He was right about the cold air building up in the hallway and not traveling through doorways. He suggested we experiment with the placement of box fans, which we are doing. So far most of the cold air doesn't leave the hallway, though we can get a trickle into rooms, just as he warned.
We need to paint our 1920’s house and are actually in the middle of trying to do it ourselves. We have furniture pushed into the middle of the room and covered in plastic sheeting. When he saw this he gave us a lot of do-it-yourself advice that surpassed what I had learned from books and online. We asked him if he knew of a painter he thought would be really good and he said that he could do it. Again, he’d already told us how to do it right, ourselves, and save money.
We discovered that in addition to being a licensed electrician Michael is knowledgable about maybe even every aspect of home construction and home repair. He has worked with famous architects and designers, helping them build and renovate houses. I asked if he can be hired for jobs, other than painting, that aren't electrical, and he said he can be hired do just about anything home related and in the rare event he can't do something he knows people who can.
In the future we will be calling him first for anything we need done in our house.
