The project is complete to my 100% satisfaction. The work is very professional and high quality. A successful project that started with a great design. I started thinking of renovating my backyard and started looking for a landscape architect to come up with a plan. I selected James Baylie Design and after reviewing the site and my wish list he developed a fantastic design. He also had a contractor, Eureka Landscape Services (ELS) with whom he had completed many other projects. He took me to see some of the previous projects and I decided to go with ELS as my contractor.
We were ready to start around June of last year but I decided to wait until October to start the project, which turns out to be the busy season for this type of work. I put down a deposit to reserve the October time slot. They started October 1st and completed by the end of January, a bit longer that we had originally hoped but I could see that the quality of work was very good and decided it was better to adjust my expectations and let the contractor complete without pushing for a faster completion. The days that their workers were there they got a lot accomplished, but there were many days when they were not there due to late additions to other projects they were finishing. So instead of being finished before Christmas it was done in January but well worth the wait.
Their "wood guy", Chuck, did fantastic work on the new deck and redwood fencing and gates. They also built some gorgeous custom redwood trellises based on some ideas I put forth. They also installed a 10' x 16' pergola that I purchased separately and had delivered tot he site, as well as a water fountain, gas BBQ, and planting pottery. The concrete, pavers, masonry BBQ/Bar and fire feature/seating were also masterfully completed.
The other great aspect of working with a designer and contractor team is that the designer knows the contractor's strengths and uses that in the design. The contractor retained the architect to work out the various details that come up during construction, which was included in the contractor's price. Both Dane and Michael from ELS were great to work with, helping to solve a drainage problem in the back yard, and other practical solutions when needed. They made sure that the work area was cleaned up and ready for the owners at the end of the work day.
One last aspect I would like to mention is the payment schedule. When I asked for the estimate I gave them a detailed breakdown of the items or work (like demolition, irrigation , system, planting, etc) which contained 33 line items and they itemized their cost proposal to my breakdown. This made it very easy to confirm every progress payment. I could see that the work had been completed and the invoice amount never exceeded the line item proposed cost, so I knew the pay request was valid. There were several changes made per my direction and the costs were always presented for my approval before work was started.
I will definitely call them for any future work and would recommend them to my closest friends.
