First they came in and told my family to see his previous work. We heard a rumor that the work he showed us was not actually his work. He took my family to a model home and told them the kitchen remodel was their work. Then they settled on a contract, but no time frames for the fees were established. They also had told my mother that remodel would be completed in two days. They came in, did demolition and left kitchen as is, because they did not have cabinets or granite yet. A few days later, I think three, the workers come in, (at whatever time they please, and not at a consistent time) and begin to work on the cabinets. Apparently there was plumbing incorrectly placed from previous owner, and rather than informing my mother to address this issue, they decided to roughly chop up the surrounding would or cabinets, to make them fit. It just so happens that we know labors with remodeling experience, we asked them to come in for a second opinion, and sure enough, the work was done incorrectly. Lots of quick fixes, and not clean work. The kitchen had a bar-like eating surface, where a layer of wood was removed and left a thin piece of plywood to take the weight of the granite. Top cabinets were not installed yet, more than half the kitchen is incomplete. The next day, my mother informed the contractor, that more work couldn't be completed until the issues were resolved. They were annoyed at this, and called a plumber to check out the previous plumbing. The plumber came in, and told my mother that he usually does not work with this contractor because he has left a lot of unhappy customers and incorrect work. So, my decides to look for another contractor and the new contractor agrees that everything has been left done incorrectly and they have cut corners. My mother calls the contractor up and tells him that she is disappointed with the work, does not want to work with him and leave it as is. Make a new written agreement where the project is left incomplete. At first they seem to agree, then the owner comes over to look at it and tries to persuade my mother to let them continue the project. At this point she does not want anything to do with him, because she no longer trusts him. The owner then threatens her to put a mechanical lien if she does not pay him for the rest of the project, even though, the project is incomplete with damaged cabinets.
