Vee Horticulture

We started with a seldom used backyard overrun with bamboo, but a desire for a garden of edibles. Vanessa of Vee Horticulture began by advising on courses of action, then referred a crew to remove the bamboo and install a retaining wall and root barrier. Then the fun began to design for edibles. We needed a deer fence and came up with a design fitting the space and a craftsman style home. Our back yard is downslope and shady in most parts, so we had challenges to keep the light and air flowing. Vanessa planned raised veggie beds and a patio area, and designed a 2-gate fence that's just wonderful - redwood framing and woven wire panels. The flagstone steps and rebuilt stone wall are terrific, and go really well with the fence and gate and arbor. The raised veggie beds are even attactive with 6" wide tops to sit on. Extra props for getting the birdbath to work again! After all of the construction was done, Vanessa worked with the contractors to bring in the soil and the soil ammendments, get the irrigation installed, and then came by with lots of great plants for installation! We had a long list of desired edibles, and managed to get them all in - kiwi, asian pear, persimmon, blueberries and raspberries. (We already had lemon, blood orange, plum, and a fig tree.) In addition, we now have many flowering and edible plants (fuschia, nasturtium, alpine strawberry) in addition to the veggie beds. I've since planted several waves of vegetable crops, enjoying a full harvest of broccoli, kale, lettuces, beans, and much more. And so nice to run down to the yard for a handful of herbs as we're cooking! Looking forward to having our fruit trees and berry bushes mature in the coming years. Great job!
