The bid they came up with was unfortunately, too high for our budget. That said, I felt enriched by their ideas and the time I spent with them.

. Their price is high, but they are really good and really qualified. They do great work from A to Z. They are very attention oriented to details. They are probably the cleanest people I have ever used like in terms of just cleaning up every speck of their mess. They are quick to respond, to follow-up, and organized.

There are not enough superlatives to use to describe McCutcheon. Whether it is a kitchen or decks or a bathroom, they are consummate professionals who know exactly what they are doing. But besides doing "just" the work, they hold your hand throughout the process. Dan Hano took me granite shopping, brought catalogues of faucets, etc and always gave sage advice. Then, when my home was burglarized, Dan immediately got someone out to my house to repair my smashed door. These people will work with you to provide you the best service at a price that is commensurate with the level of professionalism. They are worth every penny.

We contacted McCutcheon regarding a quote for the remodel of our master bedroom and basement. The wonderful and kind nature of the owner Michael won us over, and he convinced us to use his company for a more detailed design of the work. In the process he helped us tremendously with finding a qualified engineer for some earthquake retrofit work that helped us reduce the cost for that work significantly. Unfortunately the design process did not go as smoothly as we had hoped. In particular the project management was in quite some disarray, and we constantly had to remind the design team of still outstanding issues. Most of the interactions with the city for permitting reasons were handled by us, because there were too many hickups in the McCutcheon team. In the end, there was also a dramatic cost overrun, which we had to deal with. To be fair, Michael McCutcheon was extremely professional throughout the whole process, and he made changes to the team to ensure better results. He also made sure we did not have to pay for any of the cost overruns. While we have heard great things about the quality of the construction of McCutcheon, the price quoted to us was prohibitively expensive. In the end, we chose another great contractor, who performed the work for half the cost that McCutcheon was bidding. It seems to me that we might have had an unusually unlucky experience with McCutcheon, since we could see the quality of several members of his company first hand. From what I understand, McCutcheon is focusing more on the construction side of the business again, which is probably where they are stronger.

Overall, they performed well. They kept to the budget and timetable they had set. Some mistakes were made. We caught them ourselves and were disappointed that the supervisors had not seen them themselves. But McCutcheon had no hesitation in putting everything right, at their expense. We were kept informed of what was happening and when problems arose they brought it to our attention. I would hire them again because they are super professional and communicate well with the client

There was some general repair work that we had them do when we moved into the house. It's an old house. They were great to work with. They were not cheap, but they did great work. It was worth it. Moving the laundry room involved redoing some doors and rebuilding a closet. They did some dry rot repair for us in a couple of different sections of the foundation. They stripped out all of the old ceiling and reinforced the rafters in the garage. The previous owner had stored stuff up in the rafters and cracked a bunch of them by overloading them. They ended up shoring that all up and strengthening that back up again and then putting the new ceiling back in the garage. They installed a door in the side of the garage so that I could use it without having to open the main roll-up door. We talked to them about basically digging up the basement and converting it into more living room but it's just not economically feasible right now. If we do that, they are definitely who we will choose to do it. They are fantastic. They are not cheap but they do fantastic work. Actually ours was a low end job for them. They normally do custom builds and custom remodels of bathrooms and kitchens, high end custom stuff.

This is a small company but everyone that I have had any contact with has all been helpful and very nice. They answer any questions that I have in a way that I can understand. They are very trustworthy and I didn't have to stand over them. They pay attention to detail and do things that I didn't know that should be done. They did a wonderful job.

I have done several major home remodel projects over many years. This is my first experience with McCutheon and they were great in every aspect. They created a budget and time line and met all their goals/estimates. The workers and subs were uniformly high caliber, clean and polite. In addition, we had several major items remaining from a project done by another contractor which McCutcheon corrected, promptly and professionally.(see my review of Nova Design+Build in SF,CA). I believe they may be a little higher priced than some East Bay contractors but their level of professionalism and their quality justify that price. They are good "value". I have another (bigger) project next year and will probably use McCutcheon.

Excellent service and quality throughout the process. Everyone was polite and helpful, it really was a pleasure to work with Michael and his crew!

I've had them do work for me in the past, but we had some water damage and they resurfaced the porch and replaced the frame for the balcony. They do excellent work but they are high priced. They guarantee their work but our project has been off and on and I'm not happy with this because it has taken several months. First there was one-leak then two leaks and more leaks and it is just frustrating, but I would use them again.
