I was recycling nine cartons of newspapers. I telephoned and asked at what time they closed and how much they paid. The man who answered the phone answered the first question but asked his boss about the second. He then quoted me 3 cents a pound. (I did not do comparison shopping, so I don't know if this is a fair price.) I arrived about 20 minutes later and failed to re-ask the price. As directed, I put the newspapers into a bin which they weighed, getting 189+ pounds (perhaps accurate). But when he gave me the slip to sign for what I was to be paid, it showed the price at only 1 cent a pound (total: $1.90). I objected and tore up the receipt (which I had signed). He (apparently the boss) denied that I had been quoted 3 cents a pound. I went back to my car and showed him my notes of my conversation. (I had not asked for or gotten the name of the guy I talked to.) He still refused to pay me the $3.80 he owed me. I stormed out, threatening to call the Better Business Bureau and neglecting to get the owner's or boss's name or even the $1.90. NO one should do business with a company that would steal $3.80 from you!! By the way, prices for other recycled materials were on a sign. There was no line for newspapers.
