Even though I try to have good relationships with the people we work with, I understand one cannot please everyone. I also feel bad for an issue we had with the gate not opening every time, which might have frustrated Steve. We had just gotten the keys of the house, we were learning many things about it at that time but we found a solution that suited all of us. Nevertheless, after 6 months, we decided to let Steve go and as a person who also deals with customers, I would like to point a few things out.
Chronologically:
1/ Billing process is not thorough. We were overcharged for the first bill, undercharged for the second one. Steve didn't look confused nor apologetic but to his credit, he was easy going both times I had to correct the amounts myself.
2/ In December, without notice, he did not show up. I contacted him the next day, he offered to come later that week, which didn't happen. Again, he was easy going when we withdrew that visit from the monthly payment but it got us thinking: hadn't I been home, we would have paid for that visit.
3/ When a new guy shows up at a client's home, especially a newer one who still doesn't know how things work exactly, we believe a heads up, like a text, would be appropriate. Finding a stranger in our backyard was not a nice surprise.
4/ To be on the defensive, borderline condescending and patronizing with a customer who has questions, as unpleasant as it might be for a company, is not the way to go. Even if you can vouch for your employee (which he couldn't), you apologize for the confusion before offering to look into the matter and go back to them with explanations and/or a solution. And that should go without saying, in a professional way. For 15 minutes, I had to justify myself, as calmly as possible (I didn't want to **** off someone who had access to our property), going over a list of details that confused or bugged us. It seemed we were the problem, nothing else. Working from home, I know who is or is not in my backyard and what they do or not when they are. Plus, even after just a few months of service, I had learned to look for cues around the pool. As a paying customer, we are allowed to ask questions, especially when there is a new person in the equation, with a very different pattern. At that moment, Steve didn't show us that he cared for his customers and that his company was trustworthy, only that he didn't appreciate to be checked on.
5/ Now that we have been taking things in our hands, we can't even say he did a good job. We have learned by now that although it looks nice, we inherited a pool with bad water in the first place but for 6 months, he didn't make it better, on the contrary. Among other things, after his last visit, we had 8 chlorine tablets stacked in the floater, which has made 3 pool persons cringe already. The only time I recall seeing him test the water levels was when I mentioned the husband had an itchy skin after a swim, it was the basic test and his answer was that the water was hard but that was normal at the foothills. And unlike many reviews, he didn't explain things or go through them without my enquiring and even then, he wasn't the most helpful. For example, he is the only pool person who has never offered ways of covering the pool when asked, he told me to check with Leslie's. He had "put something" to fix a small algae problem (turns out it's a Pool Rx), he didn't mention a leak in the pool area.
I hate to be the bad guy among great reviews but it is our honest experience with Steve Vaughan Pool & Spa. We have now met with other professionals and we can tell the difference.
We've gon through a few pool services and finally were lucky enough to find Steve through yelp! He's an honest guy who does an awesome job. He's easy to reach, always responds in a timely manner. He's a true professional, he keeps our pool in beautiful condition. My husband and I both agree, we would recomend Steve to anyone. Can't say enough good things about him.
