$500
I hired him to give me an estimate for a bathroom remodel. The first step, he indicated, would be to draw a design. He came to my house twice to do measurements and talk about the job. He charged me $1000 ($500 up front) to draw a formal design up that I he would start with or I could take to another contractor. After two weeks he said he was done and that he would take charge me the other $500 (first red flag) He came back with a pencil scratch drawing with maybe two numbers. Literally, you could get more information from a measuring tape and 2 minutes than that drawing had on it. Itm was stunned and confused. He tried to tell me that it was worth the money because he advised me against some ideas I had for the bathroom. The estimate was supposed to be free. Also, while delivering the terrible drawing, he told me he wouldn't be able to do the job in the timeline I had originally specified and wished me luck. It was the most unprofessional, wasteful, and insulting scam I had ever experienced in the industry. Maybe your experience might be different but you should know what type of person he can be. Don't hire him ever is my recommendation

John's jobs have gone extremely well! John does what he says he is going to do when he says he will do it and his work is top-notch. He goes the extra mile to make sure the work is high quality, will last for a long time and that the materials used are excellent. John cares about doing a great job. He also communicates conscientiously so that I know what is going on and if there are any delays, why they are happening. Another benefit of working with Crush Builders is that John is a great craftsman so the work looks beautiful. I only gave John a "good" rating on price because construction work is just expensive...you get what you pay for and even though I wish it cost less, it is worth the $$ to know the job was done right the first time.

We first hired John Crush to help with a kitchen remodel in 1999 when we moved into a house in the Santa Cruz mountains. We kept the base structure of the cabinetry but pretty much replaced all the doors, drawers, counter tops, fixtures, appliances, etc.  He did much of the work himself and brought in a few craftsman to help with painting the cabinetry or doing a custom tile backsplash. John also put in new windows and built a wine rack.  We were so impressed with him work and work ethic that we kept him around to completely redo 3 more bathrooms and create a custom built buffet in the dining room.

Then we move in 2004 and had John help us with another kitchen and bathroom remodel as well as remodel of a master bedroom, building a closet and office area.

After that we hired him to help with an office remodel and miscellaneous jobs.

John's work is always top-notch, his contract resources are of high quality.

John Crush helped us remodel our bathroom.  With his estimate he provided a specific list of what he was going to do.  He delivered on this list and more.  He found problems with our wiring, roofing, and plumbing (and yes, they were real problems), and took care them at a reasonable additional cost.  We had a few hiccups along the way, but John resolved these issues promptly.  He was also very easy to deal with.

John did an amazing job. He was onsite during the entire project, as he does much of the work himself. His subcontractors (tile, texturing, windows) were equally excellent. The whole project went smoothly. It took a couple of weeks longer than planned, but that was due to a delay on the window delivery.
Also, when the code "inspector" came in from the city, we passed with flying colors - there was not even a question on any of the work, which involved construction, plumbing, electrical and HVAC. The inspector actually praised the quality of John's work!
The other thing I like about John is that he is a great "handyman." I have called him several times with small problems (leaking pipes, flickering light fixtures - I live in an old house - roof leaks) and he is generally here to help me out within 24 hours. If he can't fix it (he usually can) he knows someone who can do it.

John Crush installed a new floor into a double height space into my townhouse and also added a window to the new area, a 3 week job that I later expanded to include extensive new wiring. I found John via a recommendation from another highly rated builder who was fully booked (a good sign). His recommendation was solid and I will be using John again. John specializes in kitchen and bath remodeling. He can fit parts such as IKEA flatpack or source it for you too if available locally like wood, outlets, pipes etc.
His work for me I saw at weekends, he worked fast and fitted quality and oversize woods. His structure is the most solid thing in the house now I think. John worked so fast I often struggled to keep up, getting things I wanted him to use on site like the LED light fittings and my AV cables.
As part of the process, I bought drawings from John that I needed for the HOA, and the quoting process was written and priced too. As usual when you realize you want to make changes - in my case hidden wiring for a TV, surround sound and a matching ceiling into the hallway, that was processed and paid for separately which allowed me to handle my overspend due to project creep. Nevertheless John went above and beyond and often fitted parts and labour that should have been chargeable.
On a personal level John is a smart, switched on and driven character, He doesn’t disappear for 2 hour lunches or disappear at 3pm to “get supplies” only not to return at all. His decision making process for the everyday troubles meant I didn’t need to supervise every issue encountered from my office. He’s ex-law enforcement and also a very generous person with a great sense of humor.
Finally John is a fine guitarist and has a metalwork machine shop for custom metalworks. Doubtless he has some other specialist tools floating around too for your project.
