In this instance I called Joel to discuss the objectives of the curent project.  I then emailed him a list of some of my thoughts.  Joel replied with a detailed list of objectives which I signed off on.  Over the next couple of days Joel stayed in verbal and written contact with me to verify his that his work was on target.  This really gave me the sense that he is not only on track and but that the money I am paying him is going toward productive work.
