Arrow Glass came in, measured and gave me a quote, the same day. The glass was ordered and within 14 days our beautiful shower doors were in. The price they quoted was within the same range as the other contractors we interviewed ($850).
The big difference was that Arrow Glass Company had a complete solution for our unique shower. There were no kluddgie fixes. Their solution made our shower stall into a beautiful shower that we are very proud of.
Shower doors/Glass doors are all that they do, so they are experts. if you need shower/glass doors, run to Arrow Glass Company.
The Story
On the first of their 4 visits, the Arrow Glass technicians arrived late and without calling to revise their appointment time and without having been prepared for the job. Among other things, they had not been told that they were replacing skylights rather than windows or that the skylights were custom-made and integrated into the roof structure, rather than prefabricated skylights installed into an existing roof. Among the problems: the technicians did not bring scaffolding. At one point, a technician was standing on top of our opened kitchen door in order to reach the work area, both damaging to the door and unsafe.
In removing the existing skylights the technicians found damage to underlying wood in the roof, which their removal of the skylights greatly exacerbated such that the dimensions of the original lumber were not evident. My general contractor and painting contractor were able to come onsite while the technicians were there, inspect the roof after the skylights had been removed, and talk with the technicians about what needed to be done before glass could be reinstalled. They completed the carpentry work to replace the damaged wood. Unfortunately, the Arrow technicians did not communicate the scope of the work they believed necessary, including that flashing around the skylights needed to be replaced.
On the second Arrow installation visit, the technicians did not install the glass because they said the prep work had not been adequately completed and the old flashing was inadequate. At my request, the Arrow technicians completed all remaining prep work and provided an estimate to complete the flashing. We felt constrained to accept the estimate, whatever it might be, or risk voiding Arrow's warranty.
At the third visit, the technicians replaced the flashing and attempted to replace the glass. They did not measure the glass before putting it in, however, and one of the pieces broke all over our kitchen (causing hardwood floor damage despite our having put down tarps and plywood). The new lumber, estimated to be the same size as the original damaged lumber, was actually slightly larger. The contractors who repaired the lumber had not seen it or had an opportunity to measure it before the glass was removed. With the damage caused by removal, the original size was difficult to determine. To make matters worse, the original lumber (installed before we bought the home) had apparently not all been the same size. In such a funky situation, it seems prudent to measure the repaired openings before trying to install the glass.
The skylights were finally installed without incident on the fourth visit.
In addition to the communication issues and the lack of promptness and preparedness, the technicians were not nearly as neat as our regular contractors. We did a lot of tarping and masking to prepare, and had a fair bit of cleanup.
To be fair, many aspects of this difficult project were out of Arrow's control, such as the weather. Further, when this project began to involve the general contractor as well as the painting contractor, its complexity increased vastly, along with the need for clear communication. Multi-party projects may be unusual enough for Arrow so that its technicians lack the experience to clearly communicate their needs to others.
On the Plus Side
The new skylights look fine. They arrived in time for Thanksgiving. We even had time to get most of the interior paint damaged first. The skylights don't leak. Arrow's back office ladies were good to work with and tried to schedule my project around stormy weather. Denise in particular was great, especially when I called, nearly suicidal, after the third visit. The technicians were personable and polite. And the final price must have reflected a significant discount.
Bottom Line:
This rating says we won't use Arrow Glass again, our current leaning. But we can't really answer the question now. It would depend on the alternatives and the situation, as well as how well the skylights continue to perform.
