Our shepard suddenly presented with a droopy ear. We took him to a vet we had most recently used and the diagnosis was hematoma, The remedy was $89.00 to drain it or $1,500.00 for surgery to guarantee the ear stand up again. We chose the $89.00 drainage and left. The next day the ear filled up again. I called the vet and was unhappy with their new suggestion that I either drain it again, perform the surgey, or do nothing and the hematoma will be reabsorbed by the body. I chose to find a new vet and called a friend who has horses and she recommended Sweetwater. I called Sweetwater and Natalie answered the phone. Just off the top of her head she gave me more information about a hematoma on a dog's ear than I had been able to find on the internet and far more than the previous vet. I made an appointment to take the dog in the next day. The dog hadn't been neutered yet so we started thinking maybe we could do both at the same time. I called Sweetwater back and asked what the price would be for both procedures and they quoted me just under 570.00. That was a no-brainer to me, especially since it was less than half the quote we had for the ear alone. I made an appointment immediately and they asked that I bring the dog in for a physical since they had never seen him. I brought him in the next day and his surgery was performed the day after.
We have lived in Santa Clarita since 1984 and we have always had dogs. We have been to many vets and never found one that had us completely satisfied. I believe we have finally found one in Sweetwater. The entire place was spotless and every time a dog even slightly lifts his leg, an employee appears out of nowhere with a spray bottle and paper towel. It's immediate. Very impressive. They treated me and my dog as if we mattered and I felt like they sincerely cared about the well being of my dog. The hematoma was carefully explained to me, the surgery was carefully explained, and the prognosis. One thing I appreciated was the honest answer that there is no 100% guarantee the ear would stand up again. They would do their best and the vet, Dr. Conn, fully intended to spend as much time as it took to try to get that ear up again. It turned out the hematoma was caused from an ear infection the first vet had missed. That showed up at the first visit before the surgery. I was sent home with an ear cream and an antibiotic. The vet assistant made sure to carefully explain to me the exact method of getting this cream into the dog's ear canal. He knelt down on the floor and took the dog's ear in his hands and he showed me a and quot;milkingand quot; technique to assure the drops getwhere they need to be. Then he made me do it myself until he was satisfied I was doing it correctly. I was very impressed with that. No one has ever spent that much time with a canine ear infection with me before. The added benefit was my Golden Retriever with the 7 year history of chronic ear infections is finally cured because I can now CORRECTLY apply the medicine.
The surgery went exactly as I was told. The dog healed beautifully. No infections, no problems. I went for 2 post surgical appointments, both at no charge. All of the staff were friendly, everyone greeted me, and my dog, every time we came. Everyone is knowledgeable and friendly. Maybe it's because they do a lot of horses and larger animals, but the entire atmosphere seems to be one of and quot;let's not mess around, let's get this animal healthy and back to workand quot;. That being said, the largest breed dog I ever saw in there was my own. Most of the other and quot;patientsand quot; we ran into we lap sized dogs and cats. My dog was very calm there, as were the other pets that came and went during our visits.
After our visit we recieved a letter welcoming us to the sweetwater Clinic. They included a survey asking questions about our visit and asked for comments. The letter explained they go over the responses at their staff meetings and they encouraged me to respond. They also sent the woman who had referred me a $5.00 Target gift card. Very nice, especially since I only mentioned her name once, at my first phone call. This was the most professional veterinary clinic I have ever seen. A first class operation and I will absolutely go back.
