SYMPHONY STRUCTURES LLC
About us
Symphony Structures has been in the Tucson valley for over 16 years and the owners are long time Tucson residents with strong ties to the community. Working with local charities and high school programs are common place at Symphony Structures. In the 16 years that this company has been in business, Symphony Structures has mastered the art of home renovation and customer satisfaction. Rick says, “A happy client is a satisfied client. The quality of our work is second to none and we don’t cut corners in order to save money”. This might be one of the biggest reasons we get so many “word–of–mouth” clients working with our design and build construction company.

"We have always had an electrical license. My father, Rick is the one who carries our license. So, I'm not sure what that comment meant. After starting the bidding process on (10/16/13) which took 3 weeks before Mrs. Salyer was satisfied with her bid, we started drawing up the project for permitting. That took 1.5 weeks to draw and get the okay from the homeowner to proceed onto the permitting process. We must submit drawings within the Pima County development services. That takes another 2 weeks to complete and get the permit. We were already 1.5 - 2 months into the process and then Christmas & New Year's week hit. I went through the file and photos of this project. We dealt with (2) winter monsoons and (1) revision for the lighting. The revision was for the electrical lighting as the homeowners weren't sure of how many lighting fixtures and type. I had to go onto their property to do a Lumen Count as Pima County has lighting code for the all the Observatories. The Monsoons caused (2) delays. One with the roofing (as you can't install a built up roof when it's raining) and another when the lumber was delivered. We had to let the lumber dry out and as a matter of fact some of the lumber was returned (at no cost). We lost about 2 weeks due to the monsoons and another (1) week over Christmas. So we are at 2.5 - 3 months with Permitting, Drawings, Monsoons, & Holidays. It took less than (1.5) months to Demo, Prep, Build, Install, & Finish the project. One last item. The painting took a little longer due to Stain being applied over Rough Sawn Lumber. Staining takes an immense amount of material as it soaks into the lumber. We applied (6) coats in some instances. I must say that I give the homeowners free range to call me on my personal cell phone anytime of day. Dinner time, weekends, Sunday night....whatever. It is my way of making the communication unlimited between Symphony and the homeowner. If I get no calls....there's no problems with the project. Everything is in extremely capable hands of the bosses....my Dad, Rick & my other boss, Paul. I also have over (50) photos of this project as was on site about every other day as I was building a photo journal of this project as I do on every project. I can appreciate that we got less than a stellar review here. I know that will happen from time to time and I know that we can't please everyone. I just wanted to show the time line. I have photos to share in case anyone wanted to see our work. You may also go to www.symphonystructures.com to view other projects around the Tucson area."
"It was great working with the both of you. I have many photos of the your beautiful workshop. I'm sure you'll know where to find your husband in the future. Let us know when you are ready for the interior remodel. I'm looking forward to working with the both of you again. Thank you for coming by my booth at the SAHBA Home Show. It was nice seeing you again. Kris"
"Thank you [member name removed]. Was really appreciate the work. Thank you for letting us come back to your property to do some more work with your Vigas that were falling off your house. Let us know if you need anything else in the future as we loved working with your and your husband. I have many photos of your project. It looks fantastic next to your pool. Sincerely, Kris Hink"
As I stated, there were a few minor issues, but they were addressed quickly. The workmen were very respectful and pleasant asking if it was ok to work on a Saturday (after some bad weather) to catch up. When I said yes, I was asked "what time would be ok with you?"
There was an issue with a piece of fencing that caused a small back log, but when we spoke to Kris, it was taken care of ASAP.
The whole patio is now fantastic and actually became something better than we had in our vision. The only trouble is that we don't want to leave the patio at all now!!
To sum up the experience, it was great and we are very happy with the finished product!
Unfortunately, this is not the case. What we experienced was a parade of laborers with inadequate tools, limited english language skills, no idea of our desires and almost no supervision by Symphony Structures (SS) staff. Nobody seemed to be aware of the plans, and nobody from SS was around to inspect or coordinate the work. Workers would usually show up announced, or just as often, would fail to show when they were supposed to. Nobody, especially owners Paul and Rick would even show us the courtesy of knocking on our door to let us know they were on the site or ask us if there were any issues.
Communication with this company was very frustrating. Our experience was that they failed to communicate our expectations to their "subcontractors" and were not around to supervise the work. As a result, many things went wrong and we felt compelled to constantly be present and watching whenever anyone was working on the project. The only communication we could depend on was that Kris would call immediately when a progress payment was due.
When we identified concerns or requested corrections, we were met with denials, rationalizations, delays, and hostility from SS. Ultimately, rather than work with us, they challenged us to involve the Registrar of Contractors, which we have now done.
WORKMANSHIP ISSUES:
Nearly every major part of this project had problems. Here are a few:
- Plans were incorrectly and incompletely drawn and failed inspection.
- Concrete expansion joints were "eyeballed" resulting in crooked, non-parallel joints. Additionally, one slab drains toward our house rather than away, flooding the side of the house during rains.
- A utility room concrete floor was poured more than 1/2" out of level over a 10-foot run. When we pointed this out, Paul?s response was ?That?s what baseboard is for?. After several complaints, they finally brought in a worker to grind off the high spots and fill in the low spots, but it took a month for them to do this. The result was a floor that was marginally more level but two different colors and covered by hundreds of pin holes caused by air bubbles. Nobody from SS ever bothered to inspect this work. We ended up having to hire a third party to apply an overlay on the floor.
- The garage door opening was framed in at 7 feet rather than the contracted 8 feet and had to be re-done after we pointed out the mistake.
- A contracted skylight was omitted and had to be installed through the dried-in roof after we pointed out it was missing.
- A contracted window in the garage was omitted and was only installed after we pointed out it was missing.
- A garage entry door was installed out of level and plumb (due to the uneven floor), and had to be re-installed after we pointed out the problem. A second entry door was damaged (door frame chipped and split) by the installer.
- The electrical wire necessary to operate the porch light was buried under concrete. Their ?fix? was to pull power from a source operable by a switch at the opposite side of our house. (meaning that we would need to turn on the family room light to operate our bedroom porch light). We discovered this and requested correction, but now have an exposed romex wire running the length of the porch.
- The laborers hired to cut the opening for a new french door, showed up without adequate tools and supplies to mask off the area. As a result our house was filled with concrete dust for the several days it took to create the opening. Since they didn?t have masking tape (they asked me for some), they borrowed lathers tape, which pulled the plaster off of the interior wall when they removed it. They made no attempt to repair the holes. The french door was improperly installed (not level and plumb) and had to be re-installed by a third party installer after we complained and SS could not do it themselves. This entire door project took 4 weeks, although we had been told it would take 2-3 days.
- We contracted for a 3-coat stucco product. What was applied was a 2-coat (?Western 1-coat?) product. The base coat was not allowed to cure - both base and finish coats were applied in a day and a half. Within days, the stucco developed hundreds of cracks, many quite wide and running from the roof to the ground. Subsequently, a large slab of stucco and foam insulation detached completely from the side of the house and had to be re-attached and stuccoed.
- The stucco lather walked off of the job and it took over a week for anyone to notice.
- Nail ends were left protruding from the wall under the eaves where a rafter was removed. Several requests to repair this have been ignored.
- A window screen was ripped twice by workers, but nobody bothered show the courtesy of admitting to the damage.
- The roof material is not securely attached and is rippled. Visible air pockets are found throughout. Exposed nails protrude through under the eaves. Plant material and construction debris were not cleaned off of the roof and were simply painted over and imbedded in the roof coating. Portions of the roofing material are lapped backwards; downslope material is lapped over upslope material.
- Metal rafter clips were installed on the exterior of the porch beam, rather than on the interior (house) side where they would not be visible.
- Our property was littered with their cigarette butts and nails left in our gravel drive (see photo). Workers regularly urinated on our property (not that we wanted them in our house, but that doesn't mean they should pee in the driveway).
PROFESSIONALISM AND CUSTOMER SERVICE.
Unfortunately, their workmanship is not the only issue.
By mid-December, we had paid $38,000 in progress payments, more than enough to cover all work done up to that date. Because of the numerous workmanship deficiencies and performance issues and delays, we jointly amended (and signed) the contract in December with a final payment of $2714 due after painting, final cleanup and completion of all work. The painting was never done. After more delays, and another demand for final payment, we lost confidence that SS would complete the project to the standards they promised and contracted for. Therefore, we offered them a financial resolution to terminate the contract. We offered the full price minus the cost to complete the remaining work (approximately $4000 to cover the contracted painting price and some unfinished electrical). Their response was to go on the attack. SS abandoned the project and Kris Hink sent a series of threatening emails attacking us personally. In February 2013, they submitted a fraudulent claim against us for over $7,000 to a debt collection agency.
We are now 7 months into this 6-8 week project, and have had to involve the Registrar of Contractors because SS has abandoned the job and we have had to hire an a
There are two negatives that have bothered me during and after the work was performed. Communication between the customer and between company personnel was not good. I had a ceiling fan in the building that I wanted installed and told several people from the company about. The fan was not installed. The same thing happened with the laundry room. We wanted lighting installed during construction and I told every person with the company that I saw. The lighting was not installed. This time I was aware of communication issues, so I made sure that I told everyone I saw with Symphony about the light fixture.
Lastly, since the front end of the garage was built on fill, the cement slab leading up to the garage should probably have included footers to prevent cracking. One corner of the slab has broken off with no more weight on it but a small pickup truck. Another settling crack has developed on the slab and on the brick front of the gagage.
Overall, I still rate my experience with Symphony as very good. They do need to work on their communication and cement work.
They worked with me on getting materials, on my terms, and showed up on time. They worked efficiently, and did the job in very quick time.
Since they were doing interior work, I trusted them with the house and keys. They were trustworthy, and always locked up when they left.
The craftsman/carpenter who did the woodwork was excellent and conscientious. He was available on weekends too if he needed to be.
The addition, carport and remodeled garage look like they were always there.
