As you acknowledged, The line about the gutters needing to be removed was in the proposal. the gutters being removed was critical to the job being completed smoothly. That is why it was listed at the very beginning of the proposal and put in bold type, so that it would not be overlooked. I understand that when contractors are backed up many months, like all seem to be now, it can be frustrating. Keeping track of all the little but critical details that pertain to your specific job can get lost. That is why my supervisor offered to do all the repairs to the house, and wait until the gutter was removed, then return to replace the rotted fascia board behind the gutter. Its unfortunate that you did not take him up on that offer. The letters regarding "preparing for your roof work" are form letters that are sent to all customers and pertain to all roof work we do. The information that is specific to your job, from a practical standpoint, can only be on your proposal. The many calls and such were reminders that we would be doing the work outlined on the proposal and when we would be doing it. My estimator did recommend redoing the entire area where the lower roof tied into the wall as the entire area was done incorrectly.
