So I asked my landscaper to recommend a certified arborist: I didn't want to hire just any tree service, I wanted someone who had gone through the proper training and credentialing to become a Certified Arborist.
When the first arborist I contacted was unable to follow through, I then contacted Romeo Tree Service and set up an appointment after reviewing their Web site.
Angelo called the morning of his visit to confirm the appointment time, and he arrived on schedule.
Because no cleanup or hauling of trimmings was required (I'm establishing a brush pile for wildlife on my property), Angelo Romeo was able to do the entire job by himself in four hours (in 101º heat!), without the extra cost of a second person and the cost of removing and disposing of the trimmings (which were very substantial).
Because I have had a fair amount of experience in forestry and pruning, I was particularly impressed when I saw Angelo spend a lot of time just looking at the tree (something I had been doing for ten months!), evaluating its architecture and deciding what needed to be removed to improve both the health and beauty of the tree.
Angelo worked his way up into the tree on ropes, pruning branches and removing mistletoe as he went--it was a real pleasure to see a professional at work. Occasionally I would ask about whether a particular branch should be removed: he would either agree with me, or explain why that wouldn't be particularly necessary; he clearly knows his subject and took the time to answer all my questions.
The tree looks great! Angelo himself was also clearly pleased with the results. In a few years he may have to return to do some touch-up work but for now a tree that has been neglected for upwards of 20 years is now in great shape.
The overall change was amazing. Most of these trees had never been properly trimmed and they now much more ready to withstand Tucson's high winds and hot summers. They are as beautiful as I had hoped they would be.
Angelo came out to initially talk with me about the work and spent the first 30 minutes giving me a short course on trimming tress and then we walked the property and looked at all the trees. He stayed for 2 hours and we walked around the property discussing all the trees and what they needed. Once I decided on which area needed the work we settled on a price and a date. Without any issue he sent me his insurance and Workman's Comp. certificates.
Everything went very well. I will use him again.
He was knowledgeable and interested in teaching about what he provides as a service
He was not in any hurry and spent plenty of time reviewing the many trees and what was required
There was a rapid provision of an estimate and a complete proposal with specifications prior to leaving the property
The same evening the contract was sent by email for signing
The work was very quickly scheduled the following week
There was good phone follow up all along the way beginning even prior to the appointment for the estimate
Work done was exactly as requested and discussed. The entire process was very professional, quick , and most of all an
excellent job.
I will use Romeo Tree Service for my yearly tree care and for any emergent tree needs always.
The men who came to do the work couldn't have been nicer and they did an excellent job. One of the trees they took out had to have been very difficult and they even dug out the massive root ball so it won't grow back. I wanted to keep the larger branches of the other tree, a dead citrus, for firewood and they not only cut it into small pieces they also neatly stacked it for me. They also did an excellent job of cleaning up every last little twig before they left.
Overall they did a wonderful job at a very fair price and I fully plan on hiring them again in the future.
Angelo went above and beyond to ensure that we were well-informed and satisfied with the job his company performed. He provided a thorough and detailed explanation of services along with the cost associated with those services. Angelo explained the plan before the job started, and then reviewed the end product with us after the work was completed. He worked alongside his crew and left our property tidier than he found it. In addition, he provided helpful tips regarding our irrigation setup and the care of our 2 citrus trees, and directed us to the company website for additional information on caring for our mesquite trees.
Estimates that we had received from other companies were much less transparent than RTS, and widely varied. While it wasn't necessary for RTS to provide more than simply tree maintenance, their emphasis on educating and ensuring that we were pleased with the work inspired a great deal of confidence. We would definitely work with Romeo Tree Services in the future, and HIGHLY recommend their services!
Update (Sept 2013): Angelo and his crew returned to remove a mesquite tree that had been loosened this monsoon season from our side yard. The tree, root ball and protruding roots were removed, the hole was filled in, and the area was raked and tidied up (cost for all = $625). The crew was in and out within a little over an hour. Looks great!
From cost, timeliness, efficiency, pride in work and even appearance, I would DEFINITELY recommend them to everyone and will be calling them again for future service.
I then received an HOA notice to remove and quot;debrisand quot; so I contacted Romeo again and was told to hold the check until they got me a quote regarding the removal of the and quot;debris. and quot; A few days later, they emailed me a revised quote -- I have copied the relevant portion of their email below:
and quot;We are set with a date and time along with a slight change of price. The new invoice is $200.00, this includes all manual labor and purchasing of Blue Foothills Palo Verde tree as well as removal of tree/root ball. Date of service is Nov. 18, 2010 between 12:0-2:00pm.Price of tree from Mesquite Valley Nursery on Speedway is :$80.00 this is a15 gallon tree that is currently standing 6 feet high. We will send you an invoice and receipt from Mesquite Valley, once the work is completed. We do ask that you send payment to your tenants as we will collect when our service is completed. We realize it is coming from overseas, so we will confirm with your tenants that they received payment. and quot; I then received the following email: and quot;I made a mistake on the gallon it will be a 5 gallon for $35.00. Total invoice price is $200.00and quot;
I assumed that the change in price was due to the additional work to remove the and quot;debrisand quot; and sent off the check to ensure that it would get to my tenants in time for the appointment date.
When I checked with our tenant regarding the work, I was told that the and quot;debrisand quot; had been some tree pods which the tenants had removed and that they had informed Romeo of this. My tenant also told me that Romeo completed the work on an earlier date than the scheduled appointment date, that they had told her that they would stop by to pick up the check when it arrived, and that the tree that was planted was no where near 6 feet tall. She sent me a picture of a tree that made Charlie Brown's Christmas tree look like the National Christmas tree! I contacted Romeo on 18 November regarding this information and received the following response the same day:
and quot;1. I did originally quote you the prices you mention in your email, but sent you another email with the total of $200.00, which you wrote back and stated that was fine. We included the price of: removal of entire root ball system, shopping for the tree/payment of the tree and soil , planting of the tree. Total hours for this job:5
2. I wrote you an email stating the tree would be in a 5 gallon pot and the total is $35.00 plus tax. See attached invoice/receipt for tree and soil.
3. Your tenant *****, told me her husband removed the debris and stated there were only pods next to the house, therefore; no debris was taken by Romeo Tree Service LLC.
4. Please refer to the emails/correspondence over the last several weeks for any additional information and clarification.
5. On November 9, 2010, I sent you an email that states the price of: $200.00, you responded and quot;Thanks so much!and quot; and quot; I will put the check in the mail todayand quot; So, I am not sure exactly were the miscommuncation comes in or that you are now saying you were unaware of this until today. To plant a six foot tree would have cost; $65.00-85.00 plus, for our service to dig a whole that big to accommodate this tree would cost you between $400.00 - $550.00
6. I sent you an email soon after {about 3 minutes} stating that the tree is in a 5 gallon. {That is about 3-4 feet high. I assumed you knew this, and, yes, I should have clarifed the trees height in the email. However, that would have changed the price to about $250.00 MORE not less.and quot;
On November 19 I wrote: and quot;I think that I know what happened. I did not know that my tenant had told you that the and quot;debrisand quot; was only tree pods and she did not tell me that it was just the tree pods. So when you emailed me with the slight change in price, I understood that the change in price was due to an additional charge for hauling away the tree debris that I believed was there. I did not know until today that there was no debris for you to remove. I did receive your email about the error in gallon size/price, but I assumed that the height was the same since your email didn't say anything about an error concerning the size of the tree. As I am not an expert or experienced in this area, I relied on what you told me. I'm not going to belabor the issue here as I believe that we both are trying to be honest and fair. I can't say that I am 100 percent satisfied, but I will pay the $200. Thank you for responding so promptly to my concerns and for taking the time to send me a detailed answer.and quot;
Romeo promptly responded and stated: and quot;We will be available to pick up the check on November 20, 2010 between: 8:00am and 11:00am. I will call prior to driving out to the property.and quot; On November 25, they emailed again, stating that they had sent my tenant a stamped, pre-addressed envelope to send in the check, rather than picking it up. Then on November 27, I received the following email: and quot; You have had ample time to pay your outstanding bill of $200.00 to: Romeo Tree Service LLC. We will have to send this bill to collections by Dec. 10, 2010. and quot; I was astounded, to say the least, since they had chosen to complete the work early, had not stopped to pick up the check as agreed, mailed the envelope to my tenant over Thanksgiving week and then threatened me with collection when they hadn't received the check by the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend! When I called my tenant to ask about the check, she told me that the people that she had spoken with at the company had been awful to deal with and terribly rude. The check cleared on December 4, 2010, a whopping 16 days after the originally scheduled work date.
Since then I have had another tree/landscaping company remove a mature Acacia tree, grind the stump, and prune other trees for a total of $200. The tree that Romeo planted died a quick death and was later replaced with a 5 foot Mesquite that cost $50 -- it's still alive. I think Romeo overcharged me because I was an absent landlord (I also asked for an estimate on an irrigation repair that first came in at $100 - 175 and was then raised to $270-300, which was later completed by someone else for $65). And the military discount???? Never saw it. I cannot and will not recommend this company to anyone in good conscience. Beware Beware Beware
"Member, Having a business in this day and age allows us to be considerably vulnerable to online reviews such as yours. Although we are not thrilled to read this review we are grateful to be given the opportunity to address the information you have provided. We do not ever intend for our customers to feel frustrated, taken advantage of or the need to warn others about our service. We have many active duty military members at DM, in Sierra Vista and overseas as well as other professions that require moving around the world. 40% of our loyal customer base is absent landlords. Our goal is to provide all of the Tucson community with outstanding service in all aspects of our business. Because we have personal understanding of the sacrifices a military family endures we do offer a 10% discount. This was included in the $200.00 you were charged. Our minimum for any service is $150.00 which is standard in Tucson for most tree business that have workers compensation, general liability insurance as well as pay roll taxes. It would have been ideal had your tenant contacted us regarding the progression of the tree. This would have given us a chance to assess any failing health and given advice then. However it is difficult to address any problems if we did not learn of any issues until two years later. On Nov. 18, 2010 you emailed, "Thank you for all your help and professionalism with our landscape work and for your patience with my location challenges", so we assumed you were satisfied with the service. Here is the rest of the email from Nov. 18, 2010 you did not copy and paste: "We at Romeo Tree Service believe that our customers satisfaction is one of our main concerns, we are committed to work with our customers with the understanding that at times, a miscommunication arises and we must do our best to insure an outcome that is fair and respectful. While always being mindful of our staff, that work hard in a labor intensive scope of work. After reviewing the emails, hours/labor spent on this job and price of the tree/soil, I will have to keep to the quote that was sent to you on Nov.9, 2010 of $200.00. I hope you understand the price after reading this email. But, after you review the emails and if there is still a desperpency, we can set up a time to call you." We did not hear back from you until two years later on September 27, 2012 in the manner of an online review. In conclusion, we realize being so many miles from home leaves much responsibility on the tenants who you are intrusting to take care of your home and landscape in a mindful way. General yard care and proper watering schedules are a wise investment for any homeowner and we are glad to learn you have found a company that fits your needs and budget. Your ratings on our business encourage us to insure all our potential customers understand in detail the scope of work they will be receiving as well as our pricing. Thank you for the opportunity to make improvements in this area. Romeo Tree Service, LLC (520)603-0143"
"Thank you for your continued business."
