John and Ed are very nice people
I would absolutely recommend John, and I would use him again.
Once they started the work, I was impressed by the quality of workmanship, and the little details that John and Ed payed attention to throughout their job. They took the grinder down to the concrete to make sure surface was clean and ready for bonding. They rolled down isolation membrane on every potential crack in the subfloor (which almost ended up being the entire floor). They cut and layed out every tile, even making tapered cuts to almost exactly match the pattern in some of the door moulding. They backbuttered every tile to ensure there would be no voids when setting the tiles. I even caught John scraping every grout joint with a utility knife to pull out any thinset excess to ensure he'd have perfect grout lines when he was done (and if you take a look at the pictures, they are perfect). I was happy to work with someone who was as OCD about home projects as I would have been.
We are so pleased with the transformation of our home, and would call them back in a heartbeat if we had work that needed to be done.
We also found a standard bullnose 4and quot;x24and quot; from DalTile that matched the Arizona tile almost perfectly. John ordered the tile for us, The day after the tile arrived, John and Ed came out with the tile. They laid all the SBN along the wall, so we could see how we wanted the grout lines. Then they prepared the wall for the tile. The wall had some plaster and wood glue still present from the old wood baseboard that had been removed. Ed then laid the baseboard tile.
John and Ed waited at least a day after laying the tile to grout the tile. And then another day to seal the grout. John and Ed also use caulking instead of grout along any joints that need to be flexible.
They damp cleaned the floor any time they needed a clean surface throughout the project.
There's a lot of chatter on the internet about how to lay porcelain tile over a cement foundation. We are so glad we had this professionally done. Our floor looks truly amazing.
John Mourelatos has been laying tile for us since very early on, before 2005 at least. Here in Arizona an excellent tile person is an absolute requirement for home remodeling and renovation. John has contributed to restoring our older home, making it sparkle, and we are deeply grateful for his expertise. John and Ed are also both very personable. If you go into Arizona tile, sometimes some of their sample tile layouts are done by John.
Travertine tile for us. I was immediately impressed by their professionalism, cleanliness and most of all the
finished product. I have had them perform 3 total jobs in our home, and they were/are always a pleasure to
have in our home. Their work is outstanding and if a need arises for them to return for maintenance they
are responsive and prompt. I highly recommend Mourelatos tile! A+++++!!!!!
First John came out for his estimate. Then he came out briefly to prepare the surface. Some thinset/grout was still on the concrete base, and John cleaned and sanded down this base. Then John came out today and laid the tile. I was so impressed by how efficiently John worked. Also, at how carefully he measured and cut the tile. Also, we asked John to lift the wood trim of the entry door, rather than tile around it, and John did this for us. He also suggested a stainless steel rail from Schluter between the carport stamped concrete and this entryway tile, and this rail looks great and will protect the edge of the tile. The Arizona Tile NuTravertine has a different design on each tile. And they look fabulous. This small area of tile means more to me than my entire great room! It really complements the new entry door.
John is very professional, shows up on time, works efficiently the entire time. John laid our kitchen backsplash for us back in 2004 and tiled our large pantry in 2010. Over these years John has built up his business to be very popular with commercial, as well as residential folks here in Tucson. Given the quality of his work for us, we are not surprised and count ourselves very lucky to get him for such a small job this time. We showed John our next projects, and will schedule these projects around John's very booked schedule. He is worth it.
