I bought an Accutron watch in 1974 and I have taken precious care of it over the years. Refurbishing and regular service. It kept perfect time. A very important piece, in its obvious value to me and its value on the market which is over $1,000.
I took it to Fix Jewelery Fast in Park Mall and told them I wanted the back opened so I could read the version number of the works. While the tech had it open and was working on it, I noticed that she was fouling the sweep second hand with her finger, preventing it from moving, and I pointed that out to her. She moved her finger but said she wasn't doing that.
Then she handed it back to me and it wasn't working.
I told her that it was working perfectly when I handed it to her and she said that couldn't be confirmed because she hadn't noticed if it was working or not when she took it. I said, look at the time showing on the watch....its the about the time I handed it to you. She shrugged.
They fiddled and fussed with it. Then the apparent owner of the shop came out and said said I had the wrong battery in it and that I was to blame. I told him is the same battery I have been using successfully for many years. He said using this battery could have a cumulative effect on the watch over time. And this could cause the watch to fail when you disconnect the battery and then reconnect it, causing a and quot;surgeand quot; in the the watch. (Like what happens when one simply changes the battery.) This, they said, could toast a and quot;circuit boardand quot; and brick the watch. The guy offered to sell me a new battery for $50.
They completely absolved themselves of all responsibility, saying it was self-inflicted because of using the and quot;wrongand quot; battery. They said they were not to blame because they just did what I asked them to. No offer to look further into it, to try to make it right, to fix the watch or help in fixing it. They handed the watch back to me with not so much as a and quot;Sorryand quot; and washed their hands, dismissing the whole thing, saying it was my fault.
So my precious watch is dead, they did it and there's nothing I can do.
