"Thank you Membe. I appreciate your fairness and very glad I was able to come through for you both. Hope your bathroom turns out fantastic! Susan"
UPDATE: Susan from Canyon came today (6/18/11) and went over the problems. She checked and measured the areas where I had problems and provided solutions for each one. She was professional, made of list of each item, had the original contract on hand and understood my concerns. She was honest with what could and could not be done, which I appreciate. We re-checked the shelves which are plywood not MDF and she is replacing those shelved which have not held up. Susan is doing what is needed to make it right, even after 4 years.
My Do's for this listing are as follows: Do read your contract and understand fully what is and is not included. Do insist that your designer be present on the job when installation begins, that way they can ensure that the plan is followed.Don't hesitate to go back to your contractor and explain what isn't working.
6/1/2007: The design phase seemed to go well. The designer appeared to listen to my requirements and follow along with my logic on how to handle a large quantity of books. We agreed to use stock sized to stay within the budget. She would handle the electrical and cable relocations. We signed the contract which seemed pretty straight forward.
Then came installation. The electrician came and did a lousy job of moving an electrical switch. His work was exceedingly sloppy, leaving wide gaps in the wallboard around the cover plate. Next the cabinets arrived. Lo and behold the shelves were made of particle board and the bookcase sizes for one wall left 6and quot; to be covered with a filler board. Next, the cabinet installer arrived and cut a hole for the electrical in the back of the bookcase not on in the kick plate as I had instructed the designer, who by the way, did not bother to check any of the work in progress. I called her and complained in very direct language, upset that I was basically left with a bookcase electrical outlet which was unuseable. Thats when and quot;extra chargesand quot; came in. It's a change order she told me because it wasn't in the contract specifically. So, more money and one ruined bookcase later, the bookcases were finished but the bootbox was still outstanding and a drawer I wanted for a built-in desk was also sitting around. When I asked how she was going to install the drawer she brought out some truely ugly side panels, also MDF, and explained that I needed to expend another 2-3,000 dollars for countertops before she could install the drawer.
The bootbox languished for nearly 6 months before my husband finally called them and asked when it would be installed. Oh, there was no instruction from the designer to demolish the drywall box under the fireplace so that's extra. Everything was extra!
This experience was horrible, expensive, nightmare. There is no way I would recommend these people to anyone. After a few months the bookshelves sagged under the weight of the books we own.
