All was fine until the storm 27 Sept. We weren't at home. The tube installed on the tiled portion of the roof absolutely gushed water. It flooded the vanity area and the carpet got stained. I reported it immediately. Whoever answered the phone was quick to suggest the tube was not leaking, rather it was likely our roof caused the problem, but said they'd send someone back over.
It was very off-putting to hear a disclaimer as the default position. They need to avoid unnecessary liability, but it rather insults a consumer's intelligence when disclaimer is their first response when there's a problem.
They sent theoriginal installer back a few days later. He acknowledged the water leak (water still in the tube!), recaulked the solar tube, failed to address the staining, and AGAIN advanced disclaimers. He all but insisted that we had a roof leak vs a solar tube leak. While we knew that was highly unlikely, it could be possible, so we had Pinnacle Roofing come texamine the roof and take care of any leaks. They found NO LEAKS.
I again sent a message to Solar Concepts. Sandy called me immediately. She said she'd been on vacation or the same installer would not have been sent out again and scheduled a different person, Sargis, to come out. She said he'd check the roof , take pictures of any roof leak evidence and show them to us....OR fix the solar tube if it was the problem.
Of course, Sargis also found no leaks. He said he'd have done the installation differently but fixed the tube so it wouldn't leak. We won't know the efficacity of the repair until the next storm, but we expect it will be fine.
Sandy sent us an email saying they would pay for any carpet damages, so of course we are satisfied. This is much more like the service we've come to expect from Solar Concepts!I
We have done business with Solar Concepts several times. this was the first glitch. Had Sandy been there for our initial complaint, we'd probably have experienced less annoyance. We'll use them again.
later, Sandy emailed me a manufacturer’s certification statement and tax credit information to help me filing 2013 taxes.
He knew what he was doing, and did it quickly and efficiently.
"[member name removed] first noticed the problem in November 2012 and called a company other than Solar Concepts. They sent a very large man who did not identify the company he worked for. He told her he had resealed her flashings. When she called us in January 2013 we told her we had no record of a visit and the man she described did not resemble any of our technicians. Once we knew about the leak problems in late January 2013, I immediately arranged for a technician to go out on January 29th, but it was raining and he could not get on the roof due to slippery tiles. He went out again January 31st and resealed the flashings. On May 7, 2013 I received an email saying she had another leak and this time had called out a roofer to fix the problem. If she had called us we would have gone out without charge (even though it was past the warranty period). Also, we always inspect the entire roof to see if the problem is arising from another area of the roof. We take pictures and show these to the client so they know where the problem is originating. As she was going out of town in May for 3 weeks I asked her to call us when she returned so we could inspect the entire roof. She never called me. Three different times the flashings have been resealed. If the problem was with our installation it would have been fixed with three reseals. So, the problem is probably coming from another part of the roof. The reason we have the fine print is because we want to insure that we are called for problems so we can locate the problem and recommend what needs to be done, or so we can make repairs to our work if necessary. Roofers and handymen can sometimes make the problem worse and usually just assume it is the Solatube and not another part of the roof so they don’t bother to look."
The work performed was professional and everything was cleaned up when the job was done.
